"Alberto" (2020)

by Ashley Waddell

acrylic

"El Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday meant to celebrate and remember loved ones who've passed on. It's a day to invite beloved spirits home for a visit. Poet Alberto Ríos evokes the day's mix of joy and loss in 'November 2, Día de los Muertos.' Alberto is named for the poet and alludes to the rich, emotional amalgam of the poem; the traditional calaca (skeleton) represents the dead, and the cempasúchiles (Aztec marigolds or vibrant flowers) guide the spirits home. It honors all the magnificent beasts we've known and loved."

- Returning artist Ashley's travels and love of literature inform her art. She and her wife are lifelong animal advocates and proud members of Animal Friends Alliance's Legacy of Love Society.
