Since hitting the water in late 2018, the AM38 test boat (nicknamed the Mule by Team Principal Roger Penske in a nod to prototype racing cars) has captured the attention of the world. The first full-featured foiling yacht of its type ever built, the Mule is considered to be the fastest monohull in history. Contributing to the production of Mule were eight graduates of the IYRS School of Technology and Trades. This image is signed by Skipper Terry Hutchinson, Helmsman Dean Barker, and over a dozen other members of American Magic's sailing and shore teams.
An incredible and unique surrealist interpretation of sailing on the Hudson River by German Artist Max Graf von Schwerin, done in a single-line style. A perfect addition to the modern sailor's home.
Title: Alstersegler / River Sailor
("Alster" is a river in Hamburg, Germany, known for sailing).
Interview by the artist: Artist Max Graf von Schwerin
Can you describe how you created "Alstersegler"?
I work subconsciously. This area of the brain is usually inaccessible but makes up 80% of its function. By doing so, I ensure that I create something entirely new and not just an image depicting reality. I can access my subconsciousness by limiting myself to working with only one continuous line.
What does "Alstersegler" mean to you? What was your inspiration?
It was created by itself. It did not follow any designated form or concept. It is here because it had to be here.
What does Sailing mean to you?
I actually celebrated most of my childhood birthdays in the cockpit of a sailboat. There was one moment that I still remember very vividly. When I was little, I was down below and watched through the bull's eye how to boat was constantly submerging and emerging from the waves of the Baltic Sea. It was not until many years later that I understood the full situation. We were surprised by a storm during our sail and my parents were fighting up on deck to prevent the boat from capsizing and sinking.
Why did you get involved with HRCS?
I would like to answer this question with a metaphor "Because some have to fight storms on deck, so that others can explore the wonders of the world."

WHAT I LIKE MOST ABOUT TEACHING SAILING:
"I love being in the 'joy' business. Everyday I get to share my passion, and provide a safe and fun learning environment. What I teach isn't about making more money or improving your station in life - but rather it is about personal enrichment and self fulfillment. Teaching sailing is an opportunity to give someone a lifelong gift. Teaching sailing at a high standard is an opportunity to give someone confidence and empower them to succeed in a lifelong pursuit that has too many ancillary benefits to mention. I can't imagine doing anything else."

Chelsea Gallery Tour
This main gallery district in NYC is constantly changing. Not only are the Chelsea gallery exhibitions changing every 4-6 weeks, the gallery businesses themselves are often relocating within the Chelsea art district and stretching those boundaries to the north and inland to the east. Among the countless choices, ART SMART will guide you to the most popular, respected, and relevant galleries while selecting options according to your tastes.
What to Expect
We can visit about 8-10 galleries during your guided two-hour art tour, or explore longer and more if you prefer. We put the gallery and works in context in a manner that invites discovery and discussion. Along the way, you'll get an overview of the Chelsea gallery scene. As we do not offer public group tours, all of our excursions are private. Your tour will be led by a qualified art historian with a background in modern and contemporary art and experience in the field.
During the customization process, you can let us know your preference in:
-media (painting, sculpture, photography etc.)
-preferred periods (of the moment contemporary, more mid-century modern, or something more traditional)
tendency towards emerging talents or internationally acclaimed artists
For those interested in purchasing works of art, we can arrange for a behind-the-scenes viewing of the Chelsea galleries' larger holdings.
