Artist Bio:
Don Cooper's paintings have relied heavily on symbolism for the past 25 years. Symbolic images such as the sacred lotus, the vortex, the bindu and the circle signify meanings that are different from their literal sense. The symbols often express psychological, mystical and spiritual states of mind.
Cooper was born in Texas, but grew up in Georgia. He has lived and worked in Atlanta since 1976. His art has been inspired by travels in the US, Britain, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Vietnam, Thailand, India and China. Cooper has been awarded fellowships from the Fulbright Program, SECCA 7, the Southern Arts Federation, CGR and Awards in the Visual Arts. To date, Cooper's work has been in over 30 solo exhibitions and 65 regional and international group exhibitions. In 2004, Cooper was one of six Georgia artists to be included in the MOCA GA exhibition, Transitions II, curated by Karen Comer Lowe. The artist is one of three winners of the inaugural 2007 MOCA GA Working Artist Project Grant and he was also awarded the Judith Alexander Artadia Award in 2009.

Artist: Tony Hernandez

Tony Hernandez was born in Atlanta in 1964 and has been painting professionally since 1988. While he is a Southern artist, his works are far from the region. His subject matter delves into the lives of children of the Holocaust, as well as those who struggled through the Great Depression, especially in the ghettos of the Bronx where his grandparents lived. He is haunted by photographs of these children, often being consumed by the images until he puts pigment to canvas. Hernandez conveys the worlds that children create for themselves when they feel powerless by the fallacies of adults. With effervescence and symbolism, his paintings of preadolescent children wrestle with two themes: powerlessness and imagination. This tango creates a realm where the "mind of wonder" is tangible.
Hernandez has investigated these leitmotifs over the last several decades, working exclusively on handmade birch wood panels using the technically-demanding process of encaustic painting. While his works are simple visually, their psychological tone is complex. In these void landscapes, he portrays children unabridged, drawing on emotional gravity. With nothing to distract from the subject, the viewer is pulled into this land of childlike curiosity and fear. Even with evident melancholy throughout the body of work, such as the boy in the dunce hat, reaching for his shadow, there is hope within his shadowed, crowned self. Hernandez often uses doves to imply this sense of hope, as they represent a bridge from the despondent into the ethereal. With the painting of the doves sitting before a lounging girl, they seem guardian-like, protecting her from the trials that presumably surround her. In another painting, a girl adorns a deep red dunce cap while two doves perch on her forearms, depicting that thin divide between reality and imagination.
Through his adroit portrayal of historical calamities and symbolism, Hernandez has been contrasted with a litany of acclaimed artists, such as Christian Boltanski and Anselm Kiefer. Even so, Hernandez's dexterity draws from his own instinct, which he developed after attending the Art Institute of Atlanta as a high school student. After devoting himself to painting full-time in 1988, he distinguished his style further as he recognized that he paints for the primarily emotional connection. This disassociation from trends has allowed him to look inward before he looks outward, creating works that are overwhelming and frank. The art critic Jerry Cullum has said, "It's rare to find an artist whose work functions so totally on a level that gives the subjective sensation of intellectual satisfaction without providing anything like an obvious conceptual agenda. His approach to figuration delivers a definable psychological impact, and that he does this with rather more complexity than most painters."
Tony Hernandez exhibits internationally and his works are in numerous public collections throughout the U.S., notably the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. He recently relocated his Atlanta home and studio to Charlotte, NC.

Mr. Sherer is an internationally-exhibiting artist who explores issues of race, gender, sexuality, and Southern identity in his work. He is best known for his use of unconventional media and for four incidents of art censorship. During the mid-1980s, Sherer worked with the folk artist Reverend Howard Finster at Paradise Gardens. Africa has developed her love for high pigmented paint and earthy colors. Asia has reinforced her minimalism inclination and her fascination for zen philosophy. Ruth Franklin is an English painter who lives in the Deep South. She was born in Kent, England and studied at Brighton Art School in the eighties. Ruth has always maintained her identity as a painter and has stuck to her own ideas about what makes a good painting. She has continued over the past thirty years to push around paint in her own way, reveling in the process to create evocative and compelling pictures. Ruth has twice been voted 'Best Visual Artist' in Atlanta (2019 & 2014) by the readers of Creative Loafing and she was nominated for the prestigious United States Artists Fellowship in 2016. Shawn Vinson has been an avid photographer since getting a Polaroid OneStep camera for his eighth birthday in 1977, a camera that he still owns to this day. In high school, his Graphic Arts teacher introduced him to 35mm film photography and the magic of the darkroom. He bought his teacher's old Nikkormat camera and began photographing local bands and aspiring models, winning a Scholastic Arts Award in Photography his senior year. In 1991, he serendipitously got a job working for a Florida-based art dealer, where he started out doing deliveries & installations. After a few short years, he was promoted to Southeast sales rep, covering six states. That's when Vinson's art education began and he has had the good fortune of getting to know many talented & interesting artists & photographers along the way, even marrying one of them! Vinson opened Decatur's first contemporary art gallery on the Square in 1998 and, since that time, has focused most of his energy on promoting his eclectic roster of artists. He met the late Atlanta photographer, Marvin Rhodes, in 1999 and presented a one-man show for him the following year. Rhodes became a mentor and a friend, introducing Shawn to medium-format film photography and the wonderful plastic Holga camera. Sadly, Rhodes passed away in 2017, but his memory lives on. Currently at Different Trains Gallery, where Vinson is a partner & director, they are presenting the retrospective exhibition 'Remember Marvin Rhodes'. Vinson has always continued making photographs, both film & digital, mostly for the pure joy of it. He occasionally does commissioned work and has exhibited his prints in Atlanta Photography Group Gallery shows such as 'Fay Gold Selects' and 'Director's Cut'.

Dinett was born in Aguadulce, a very small town in the Republic of Panama. As a young girl, drawing was her favorite pastime. She began formal art studies at the age of 17 at the University of Panama and paid her college tuition through Freelance artwork and graphic designs.
Dinett had the wonderful fortune of meeting renowned Panamanian artist Manuel Chong Neto through one of her college professors. His work continues to influence her creativity and passion. After graduating from the University of Panama with a BA in Graphic Art, Dinett worked as a commercial graphic artist for two different clothing companies.
Upon moving to the United States in Newnan Georgia with her husband Michael Hok, after becoming a U.S Air Force military with her son Ian M. Hok. Dinett, embarked on a six-year endeavor to promote and teach art to elementary school students in the public school in the state of Georgia. Dinett believed that her students could learn and apply advanced system for art techniques on a variety of mediums at a very young age if the correct approach was used. Many of her students won awards at local, state and national level competitions.
Dinett's journey as a professional artist continued to expand as she took on the leadership role of Area X Chairman for the Florida Artists Group. FLAG is one of longest standing non-profit art organizations in the state Florida.
Dinett creates artwork with her unique style called Polyrijzicism (a cross between traditional flat canvas art and sculpture creation where the artwork physically extends from the canvas). Her work has received acclaims both nationally and internationally in the United States, Paris, Rome, Venice, Beijing, as well as other venues in Europe.
It is the freedom of creativity and expression and experiences with some great artists that continues to fuel her desire to create and share art. Dinett has always been enchanted by the beauty of nature, people and places and continues paint where she currently resides in Newnan, Georgia.

Atlanta native Nate Nardi always found himself drawn to creative expression through making. He discovered his passion for glassblowing in 2001 and realized that glass art was the discipline he wanted to specialize. Nardi graduated from Jacksonville University in 2004 with a BFA in glass art, receiving an Excellence in Art award from the Dean. In 2009, he graduated with a MFA from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He has also completed many workshops at different craft schools around the country, like the Pilchuck School of Glass. Nardi received commissions to make glass objets d'art for several prominent artists including Kiki Smith and assisted with numerous large scale public installation works such as, Jon Christie's and Caroline Madden's Lyrical Light, held at the Times Union Center in Jacksonville Florida. In the years of 2009-2011, Nardi worked as a glassblowing assistant to renowned glass artist, Richard Jolley, in Knoxville, TN. In 2011, Nardi moved back to his roots to pursue his dream of making unique hand-blown glass art. He is owner and operator of Decatur Glassblowing located on the east side of Atlanta. His primary artistic expression is the abstraction of natural form which can be seen in all of his work, whether sculptural, decorative, or functional.

Gretchen Neal began her artistic career as a graphic designer where she worked in newspaper and magazine design and layout. During that time she won numerous awards in print media for her creative designs. In 1983, she left the field to begin teaching small group art classes to children and to pursue a career as a specialty painter, working with interior designers. Her extensive works include murals, faux finished walls and hand painted furniture. As an art instructor, Gretchen has had the opportunity to teach children in after school programs in the metro Atlanta area. In addition, she has provided art instruction in her home studio to elementary school age children for over 19 years. She has participated in the Visiting Artist program for Cobb county public schools since 1992 where she introduces the concept of 'highlight and shadow' in a fun, interactive 45- minute presentation based on her book, "Think Outside the Sphere". Gretchen has returned to Ormond Beach, Florida for the past 16 years to provide a summer art camp to the children of Ormond Beach. Most recently Gretchen has conceived and facilitated large scale, corporate art projects for CocaCola's local and global employees.

Chase King, twenty-eight years old, lives and works in Woodstock, Georgia. He began painting and drawing at the age of sixteen shortly after losing his mother to a malignant brain tumor. As unfortunate as that was, the loss in many ways triggered a visual expression that continues to inform his work today. Chase's young career as a contemporary artist is optimistic and promising. Since receiving his BFA in painting and drawing from Kennesaw State University in Georgia, Chase's work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and abroad. Chase is currently preparing for a solo show for January 2020 at 378 Gallery in the Candler Park neighborhood of Atlanta. Eloisa Gallegos Hernandez is an artist born in Mexico. She has worked with still life and models. Photography and extensively research a great amount of mythology, lore, and cultural are some aspects for inspiration. Specifically, she gains a lot of inspiration from her mother country, Mexico, and beautiful Japan with its own rich culture. Despite the eclectic subjects of her work, figurative and technical proficiency have been common aspects which she has come to truly connect with and appreciate. Some of her most recent work consists of teaworks, art created with tea, having a great emphasis with the Art of Tea, nature, and the sense of tranquility brought by the influence of tea.

Agata Magelis was born in Riga, Latvia. After graduating from the University of Latvia, majoring in Philology, she left the country in 2001 for America. Agata's art is dedicated to an everlasting experiment with different medias. Thematically, she paints he personal experiences, as well as tries on other people's fates and human behavior in extreme conditions. In 2016 she discovered thermal paper burning. It was a pleasant surprise of numerous possibilities of creating peculiar dramatism in her works. Since then, she continues working with mixed media, enjoying the interlace of different layers, while creating the mysterious environment.
