"American" or "Western" raku firing is a process in which work is removed from the kiln at a bright red heat and subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials such as straw, paper, or even hair. This process blackens the clay and causes crazing in the glaze surface.
Susan Carpenter was an artistic, feisty, sassy redhead. On September 13, 2014, she passed away from Ovarian Cancer. She had been creating wool-felted vessels, selling them and donating the proceeds to Ceres Community Project in Sebastopol, CA. Susan's work was shown at a Gallery in Santa Rosa.
Susan got into felting when she got sick and her good friend Nikki said "Let's knit!" When Susan passed away, Nikki was left with her beautiful and locally sourced materials. These items were created in her memory and embody the spirit of love. Nikki's grief prevented her from touching the wool for 5 years!
These small vessels were inspired by chair covers in Iceland. Sizes vary, approximately 2" x 5"
