Matthew Nagin

Mission Award

Matt Nagin is a writer, actor, comedian, and educator. Kirkus Reviews called "Butterflies Lost Within The Crooked Moonlight," his first poetry book, "powerful verse from a writer of real talent." A poem, "If We Are Doomed," won The 2018 Spirit First Editor's Choice Award and will be anthologized in the book "Spirit First: 10 Years of Meditation and Mindfulness Poems." He has two more books slated for release this year, including "Bohemian Revenge," a humor collection to be published by Tenth Street Press. Matt is also an award-winning actor and filmmaker, whose short film, "Inside Job," won Best Short at The Mediterranean Film Festival Cannes and Best Supporting Actor at The Nice International Film Festival.

Matt has suffered from Crohn's disease for nearly thirty years. He has had three surgeries, countless procedures, been on nearly every medicine available, and has struggled to maintain a positive outlook. One element that has helped Matt cope is working as a Talent and Show Coordinator for the Gotham Comedy Foundation, an organization that brings comics into cancer centers and senior homes and tries to spread good cheer. Another is contributing to the CCFA as part of a general effort to improve treatments for Crohn's and colitis, and, one day, help find a cure.

About the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to finding the cures for Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improving the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. It was founded in 1967 by Irwin M. and Suzanne Rosenthal, William D. and Shelby Modell, and Henry D. Janowitz, M.D.

Since our founding nearly five decades ago, the Foundation has remained at the forefront of research in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Today, we fund cutting-edge studies at major medical institutions, nurture investigators at the early stages of their careers, and finance underdeveloped areas of research. In addition, our professional education workshops and programs, along with our scientific journal, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, enable medical professionals to keep pace with this rapidly growing field. We are very proud that the National Institutes of Health has commended us for "uniting the research community and strengthening IBD research."

Beyond research, the Foundation is collaborating with healthcare providers to improve IBD quality of care, as well as educating, supporting, and empowering patients and their caregivers through patient-centric education and advocacy programs.
