This is a 2003 Blue Corner Wright Brothers Tribute to Valor "100 Years of Aviation Celebration" 12" 1/6 scale figure set. Orville and Wilbur Wright were pioneers of innovation in the field of aviation. The Wright Brothers were influenced by their parents and a strong family life that built a partnership that led them to success in many things. Milton Wright was a minister who instilled self-discipline and faith into their lives. Their mother had mechanical and inventive abilities. She inspired her boys to be creative, to experiment and learn to repair things. The brothers received a gift from their father that first sparked their interest in flight. They received a helicopter like toy top. When the toy broke, the brothers not only repaired it but they created variations of there own. Orville and Wilbur built kites and sold them to their friends to make money to help fund their experiments. Printing was another interest the brothers shared. Orville started his first printing business with a friend at age 14. A few years later Orville and Wilbur built a printing press from an old tombstone and some extra parts they had. The brothers also ran a newspaper and in 1893 opened a bicycle shop. From that point on they were known as the Wright Brothers. They repaired bicycles and soon started to build their own. In 1896 Orville was very ill for six weeks with typhoid fever. During his illness Wilbur would stay by Orville's side reading about Otto Lilienthal's experiments with flight. The German engineer worked with gliders. Lilienthal based his designs on the study of birds. He was killed in a glider accident. After studying Lilienthal's work Wilbur came up with his own ideas on flight. Orville was a master builder and started putting some of Wilbur's ideas to the test. After a few years Orville made their first flight a reality on December 17th, 1903. He went 120 feet in 12 seconds. It was the first time man had flown with controlled mechanical power! The figure set is pretty cool and would make a nice addition to any collection. The figure set is mint unopened in nm/mt package.
