The illustrious career of Wayne Gretzky came to a close in the 'Big Apple' as member of the New York Rangers an Original Six team. Gretzky signed with the Rangers as he sought one more shot at a Stanley Cup Championship. During his first season with the club in 1997, he led an aerial attack on the post season goaltenders as his slap shots led the team in goals. He also led his team in assists as they reached the Eastern Conference Finals. On December 18, 1989 Sports Illustrated released their final issue of the year. The cover featured NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, NBA Hall of Fame point guard Magic Johnson, and NHL Hall of Fame center Wayne Gretzky.
