Towards the end of high school Frey was introduced to the idea of collage through a new mentor, Roderick Slater, but rather than study art formally at the university level, he jumped into a program of Philosophy and Classical Literature at St. Johns College in Annapolis, where, incidentally, he began to study the craft of binding books. Wanderlust, and a long-standing desire to learn french, inspired him to drop out of college and move to Paris where I spent the year admiring everything French, and re-affirming his focus in the visual arts. This led him to New York where he first began seriously to pursue a career as an artist, and where he apprenticed for a year with the exceptional and innovative book artist Richard Minsky. The irrepressible desire to paint, and draw, and evolve eventually led him away from bookbinding and back into two dimensional creations in mixed media and painting. His last formal studies were at the Art Students League of New York.

Artist Personal Statement: Drawing is a necessity in my life, and I try to draw each day----whether in my sketchbooks, in travel journals, or on the backs of envelopes. I believe that competent drawing skills are basic to any artist, and before I embark on a new watercolor, I do many preliminary sketches. Shapes and good composition precede color work. Although I enjoy working in a variety of media, watercolor, with its many surprises, is then the most exciting for me. Painting in Door County includes plein air landscapes at favorite locations, wildflowers in our woods, figures n the beach ad winter snow scenes. Whatever the season, Door County inspires me to produce artwork that reflects my love for the place and its remaining natural beauty.

Ty Stroudsburg grew up in New Jersey, and attended college at Paterson State University. While there, she exhibited an early painting at the Montclair Art Museum. Ty moved to Southampton in 1963 and continued to work in abstraction. Gradually, she began to incorporate the colors and broad expanses of the East End landscape into her work, while maintaining the heightened colors and expressionistic brushwork of her former abstractions.

Fascinated by the architecture of nature, the form and function of the body, the way light changes our perception of space and color, Saviano's vision is to create phantasmagoric works using texture and illumination, incorporating organic and industrial forms to acknowledge their coexistence. For this self-taught artist, creating is both a physical and emotional process informed by her everyday experiences. Painting is a means to translate, with humor and musicality, those experiences into abstractions, an escape from concrete reality into deep fantasy. Working principally in acrylics and mixed media, Saviano, who was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1955, maintains a studio in Oakland, California and divides her time between Oakland, Nayarit, Mexico, and the central coast of Chile.

Artist Bio:

Mark Adams is a self-taught artist; while he is proficient in many mediums, his preferred medium is sculpting, specifically metalsmithing. Over time, Mark has acquired a meta(L)physical approach to his work. He is influenced by metaphysical artist Alex Grey, and the transhumanistic art movement.

Mark's work explores the intersection of the the conscious and unconscious realms. Mark is most comfortable taking a deep dive into the realm of the unknown. Common themes in his work include: man vs nature, man vs technology, evolution vs stagnation, and darkness vs light. In fact, Mark is known for bringing his pieces to life by incorporating lighting and other reflective features. He brings great precision and attention to detail when it comes to deconstructing, and manipulating the raw materials of his pieces.

Mark is a resident artist, at Water Street Studios, in Batavia, IL. where he enjoys collaborating with other artists and art patrons to create custom pieces.

Serene and pure. That's how this lake setting felt during morning plein-air sessions -- and the likely inspiration for its name.

The painting, however, crackles from quick strokes and contrasting textures: soft grasses, prickly pines, craggy stones under mist, flowing water.

The composition rocks, too. The lake's S-shape pulls the eye in and back. Attention twists around via the torque of crisscrossing invisible diagonal lines connecting similar forms: the arrowhead shape of the mountain and lake tributary and the roundness of the grassy peninsula and distant mountain.

Morning peace becomes electric.
