History of the WSCTU Rock Creek Sign

In 1985, inspired by Peter Pagnutti, an avid angler and conservationist from Spokane, WSCTU chapter member Lon Dale came up with the idea for a sign on Rock Creek based on encouraging anglers to limit their kill. The chapter authorized $100 for the sign and Lon donated much of the labor and materials for installation. A local sign painter, Earl Holland, made the sign but did so with an error. It reads "Limit Your Kill Don't Kill Limit" when it should have read "Limit Your Kill Don't Kill Your Limit." But funds were tight and the chapter just went with it. This is not the same as a postal stamp or coin with an error from the mint that can drive things to high prices by collectors, but it certainly makes it a more interesting story!

At the time the land was owned by Dr. Michael Sousa, a Missoula orthopedic surgeon, and he gave approval to install the sign on his property. It is now owned by Five Valleys Land after it was purchased to save the land from development. The WSCTU contributed money to help with the purchase.

One weekend in 1985 Lon with his two boys, Kyle aged 10 and Blane aged 7, headed up to fish Rock Creek and install the sign. After digging holes with a post hole digger they mixed quikrete for the metal posts. The metal posts, instead of wood, proved durable because the sign has stood for 33 years.

The new sign will go up when the earth thaws this spring and Lon and his sons Kyle and Blane have volunteered to help with the installation. What a beautiful circle of memories that is!

About Big Sky

Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980's, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In the early '90s they worked at Sportsmen's Surplus and High Country Sports where they met Bjorn. One of Brad's first nights in Missoula was spent at the old Iron Horse when it was attached to Bayern Brewing Company down at the end of Higgins Avenue. He was impressed by Bayern's lagers, but felt that there was room in Missoula for a second brewery; and since Neal and Brad specialized in brewing English style ales he felt that an ale brewery would be producing very different beers than Bayern Brewing Company did. Neal agreed, and the two began to work on starting up a brewery. They brewed their first batch of beer, Whistle Pig Red Ale, in mid-June of 1995 and hit the market with it just in time for the 4th of July weekend. Zipping at the Bowl:

The tour includes four separate zip lines circling the Snowbowl base area. The lines are paired so you can ride next to a friend while flying in a comfortable paragliding harness. Zip #1, "The G-Line" is your warm-up, flying for 200 feet over the Grizzly lift and next to the Gelande Jump, right in front of the Last Run Inn. Zip #2, "Butler Brink" takes it up a few notches as you launch off the side of the mountain near the Grizzly Chute, across the headwaters of Butler Creek and land about 600 feet away on Longhorn. Clip onto Zip #3 "Tamarack Tunnel" to fly 700 feet through the trees well over 100 feet off the forest floor to the landing below Paradise. The mission of the Montana Natural History Center is to promote and cultivate the appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of nature through education. Jaegerworks Advanced Hunter Education:

JaegerWorks, LLC, provides hunting education geared toward hunters new to the sport or men and women that did not grow up in a hunting culture. The exercises and lectures are designed to help the individual be a successful and ethical hunter by providing students with the tools to make good decisions afield and evaluate hunting situations before they are encountered. In addition, students will gain a better understanding and appreciation for the animals being hunted. Course curriculum will cover topics from Ballistics and Shot placement to Butchering and Bear Safety. This will be accomplished through lectures, discussions and practical field activities. Lectures will range in topics from preparing for your hunt through the process of hunting to what you need to know after you have harvested your animal. In addition, field exercises that reflect actual hunting situations will be used to develop skills required for tracking and recovering wounded game.

This is not a shooting or marksmanship class. There are no live fire exercises as part of the curriculum.

Removing the Rattlesnake Creek Dam will result in 35 river miles reconnected for native fish, 10 acres of wetlands restored, 45 acres of new open space, 2 miles of new biking/hiking/skiing trails and a new 5-mile class II/III boating opportunity near Missoula, Montana.

Trout Unlimited estimates the cost of removal to be in the $1 million to $1.8 million range, with the work anticipated to be done in the summer of 2020. Demolition of the structures is expected to cost between $507,000 and $1 million and restoration of the creek bed is estimated in the $574,000 to $860,800 range.

"We have done 50 percent of the preliminary design, which is sufficient to get good cost estimates but not a firm estimate. So we have a high and low range depending on anything from what diesel prices are to how much other construction activity is going on. So far, we have spent about $200,000 on planning, on-the-ground data collection costs, engineers, hydrologists and working on designs" according to Rob Roberts , a project manager with Trout Unlimited.

R.B. Meiser Fly Rods is located in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon. Bob Meiser and his staff have been building and designing two handed fly rods since 1986. This is a very small shop now made up of 4 crafts-people. They build single and two handed fly rods, and they build them all one at a time.

R.B. Meiser generally builds 400 to 450 rods a year, and all are custom built to client specifications. They use only their own in-shop designed blanks for their rods, and can do specifically designed tapers to meet exact individual angler needs.

Although Meiser's rod building production is very small, they've had a big influence within the worlds' two handed fly rod community. Both the Switch Rod and Grain Window concepts were originated in their shop. Both have now become generic terms within the two-handed community.
