John Fulton Folinsbee (1892-1972) was born in Buffalo, New York, and received his first formal arts instruction from painter Jonas Lie at the age of fifteen. By the age of twenty, he had fully committed himself to painting, marking the start of a career spanning six decades.

He first came to New Hope in 1916 at the suggestion of tonalist painter Birge Harrison. There he joined Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, Robert Spencer, and William Lathrop-the group of artists now generally known as the New Hope School of landscape painting, or the Pennsylvania Impressionists. He quickly became immersed in the community there, and, in 1929, helped to found the Phillips Mill Community Association with his wife, Ruth.

Although his manner of painting changed as he incorporated more contemporary ideas and techniques, Folinsbee always approached his work with a fearlessness and independence that makes his work challenging to classify. He had little time or need for "isms," and thought of himself merely as a Realist, an artist seeking to reveal the deeper truth of the world around him.

He is best known today for his impressionist scenes of New Hope, Pennsylvania, and Lambertville, New Jersey, particularly the factories, quarries, and canals along the Delaware River, and was also an accomplished portraitist.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars enjoys a distinguished reputation and is considered a Napa Valley first-growth estate. They were the first to bring international recognition to California winemaking and the Napa Valley when the 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon won the now famous 1976 Paris Tasting, besting some of the most celebrated wines of Bordeaux.

Artist Arthur Meltzer (1893-1989) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and began his training as an artist at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. After leaving home to serve in World War I, he relocated to Philadelphia to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), studying with Daniel Garber and Joseph Pearson, both of whom proved greatly influential on Meltzer's style.

In 1921 he won the prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship at PAFA and used it to travel and study throughout Europe. His exposure to art in Europe reinforced the lessons of his teachers, and Meltzer's style began to truly capture the essence of the Pennsylvania Impressionist idiom. He is best known for his landscapes that capture the changing seasons and different times of day.

In 1925, Meltzer joined the faculty of the Moore Institute (now called the Moore College of Art & Design) as a fine arts instructor. A year later, in 1926, he became Head of the Fine Arts Department, teaching painting, drawing, and anatomy. It was there that he met Paulette Van Roekens, also a Moore teacher and painter, whom he married in 1927. Meltzer taught at the Moore Institute until 1949 when he retired to his home in Huntington Valley where he painted and taught privately for the rest of his life.

Meltzer's work has been exhibited at the Michener Art Museum on a number of occasions, including Objects of Desire: Treasures from Private Collections (2005-2006), An Evolving Legacy: Twenty Years of Collecting at the James A. Michener Art Museum (2009-2010), and the institutional landmark exhibition The Painterly Voice: Bucks County's Fertile Ground (2011-2012).

Established in 1908, Domaine Chaintreuil is a small, family-owned estate that in just over 100 years has expanded to six times its original size. The six-hectare La Madone vineyard is run by oenologist Gilles Chaintreuil, who represents the family's fourth generation. Gilles stays true to the century-old traditions passed down to him from his ancestors, while also implementing new-age techniques in both the vineyard and cellar.

The Fleurie La Madone is named for the small chapel situated atop the hill that has overlooked the cities of Lyon and Macon since 1866. The Madonna perched above the chapel is said to watch over the people below, as well as the region's 800 hectares of vineyards. Fleurie is a very unique and special terroir, with southeastern exposure at an altitude of 350 meters. The granitic soils produce wines with good structure and power, which also have the capacity to be aged for a long time.

The Domaine Chaintreuil Fleurie La Madone-made from 100% Gamay-pours a deep purple with a brilliant ruby rim. Aromas of cherries and raspberries alongside floral notes of peonies and violets dance from the glass, complemented by underlying hints of light spice. Self-taught artist Margie Perry is the quintessential Bucks County native-she grew up in Chalfont, and has lived in Lahaska for over 25 years. She began painting in 1999, experimenting and learning new skills as she created. She works primarily from photographs, and is deeply inspired by the area in which we live, capturing scenes she sees as she goes about her daily life.

Though innovative thought was banned, Zhu naturally evolved into an Impressionistic idiom. He came to the United States in 1989, and became known for his mastery with the gouache medium. He creates light-filled landscapes and waterscapes of places with which he is familiar-China and the Yangtze River, Arizona, Washington State and Central Oregon. He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and has won numerous awards both in China and the United States. He participates in many exhibitions and one-man shows throughout the nation and in China. Born in Philadelphia in 1946, Diane Levell was raised in Bucks County, before going on to study architecture and interior design at Endicott College, and earning a Bachelor's of Fine Arts at the University of Delaware in 1970. There she first developed her skills in photography, an interest that quickly blossomed while she pursued her Master's in Fine Arts at George Washington University; though she entered school to study ceramics, she quickly found a new photo-chemical skill set and began forging a new path in alternative process photography. At the time, no faculty taught alternative processes, so Levell pursued independent projects to master the skills needed for the four historical processes that have been mainstays of her artistic career: cyanotype, gum bichromate, photogravure, and Van Dyke printing.

After touring the continent extensively during her graduate studies, Levell and her husband moved to Europe, living for a number of years in Paris, London, the south of France, and Turkey before settling in Heidelberg, Germany. There, she taught an impressive range of art and design classes, and served the U.S. Army as both a graphic designer and the chief photographer in Europe. She exhibited at a range of institutions, most notably in 1989 in a special exhibition at the Stadmuseum Ludwigshafen celebrating the 150th anniversary of Daguerre's published instructions for sensitizing photographic plates: the birth of modern photography. Since returning to the United States she has exhibited at The Platinum Gallery in NYC, the Princeton Arts Council, Bucks County Community College, the Mercer Museum, Delaware County Community College, the Hunterdon Art Museum, and was a prize winner at the annual Phillips' Mill Photography exhibition in New Hope, among many others. Her first solo show at the Michener Art Museum, Intrepid Alchemist: Diane Levell's Bucks County, was on view March 23 through July 28, 2019.

John R. McGahey, Fall Vision

A signature member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters, McGahey returned to his first love-painting-after a career as an art director in broadcasting, advertising, and direct marketing. His work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions at institutions across the country, including the Palm Springs Art Museum. He was a major prizewinner exhibiting with the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic at the Salmagundi Club in New York.

Quakertown-based artist Steve Tobin is known internationally for his work with glass, bronze, recycled materials, and monumental steel-two of which grace the Michener's front façade to this day. His works can be found in collections from Doylestown to Shanghai-and everywhere in between.

His enormous studio is home to three-story sculptures of recycled metal that has been transformed into elegant and massive root forms.
