As we gather to celebrate our 45th anniversary, we are proud of how far we've come. Since our founding as Rape Victim Advocates in 1974, we've grown from a volunteer team of 10 medical students to the largest comprehensive rape crisis center in Chicagoland serving 15 hospitals and inspiring friends and neighbors of all ages to create a culture of support. In the past year alone, we've educated nearly 18,000 K-12 students to prevent sexual violence; trained over 3,000 local professionals to stand with survivors; and provided support to over 2,000 survivors through advocacy, individual counseling, and support groups, including specialized support through our expanding art therapy program. In 45 years we've made great strides, but our work has just begun.

In our current social climate, where rape myths still have a bigger voice than survivors, it is estimated that a sexual assault happens every 98 seconds. The past year has exposed the ways sexual violence is embedded in our culture and has called into question how we deal with the issue. Claims of violence too often go unbelieved, dismissed, minimized, and even normalized. For true impact, it is mission-critical for us to prevent sexual violence from occurring in the first place.
