History and DescriptionThis small desk-top clock was designed and introduced as part of the Mission Collection in 1994 as an accessory item for gift giving. The Rest of the Story as told by Bill DeBlaay, Stickley DesignerThe 89-84 started as an idea for myself because I was inspired to build something one day and I always had a soft spot for clocks. As the idea was coming to me and the thought process was developing, I realized that this design would make a great product for the Stickley line. It had only 4- parts to it, plus the movement and dial. So I made 5- of these clocks, at home, I had Syracuse Blueprint photo etch the first dials on to a brass colored photo sensitive sheet of aluminum. The thin dials needed a stiff backing, so I used contact cement to adhere them to a 1/4" piece of plywood. The day came for me to bring my creation in to show to Alfred. It happened to be 11th. Clark Spurlock was our National Sales Mgr. then and I showed it to him. He asked me if I remembered that it was Alfred's birthday (which I didn't) and I said, well then I have the perfect birthday gift for him. I had it in a brown paper grocery bag rolled up (Not your typical birthday wrapping) Clark and I both went into Alfred's office and I set it before him as he sat at his desk and said, I just happened to have a birthday gift for you. Needless to say he loved it, however, in typical Alfred fashion, he started to suggest a design change. I told him that if he was accepting the gift and wanted to add it to the line, it had to be left as it was. He agreed, and the rest is history. It was a fun piece. And that's the rest of the story. Construction Features1. One piece, solid wood body2. The dial plate is solid brass with a slight texture etched into the surface along with the numerals. It's then blackened to fill the etched areas, and then finished with an antique copper finish. Setup InstructionsBack panel twists off to access battery operated quartz movement. Mechanism RemovalTo remove the mechanism the hands need to be carefully pulled from the front of the clock. A drop of lubricating oil may need to be used if the hands do not pull freely. The mechanism is easily accessed by twisting the back panel to align with the cutouts. With the back panel removed the mechanism can be pulled out.Replacement Mechanism Part Number N8029 MaintenanceInstall new batteries as needed. Originally designed by Gustav Stickley's designer Harvey Ellis in 1901. The original inlay work was a combination of metals. Later examination shows the metal more likely to pop out of place. The re-issued designs are a combination of maple and cherry wood. The inlaid back panels are necessarily engineered using veneer panels to eliminate delamination seen on early solid wood panels. No particular significance can be placed on the actual design of the inlay except for the fact that Harvey Ellis was an advocate of Japanese art and his designs emphasized stylized floral and plant motifs. The design on this chair takes its inspiration from a milkweed pod. Construction Features Pinned mortise and tenon joinery Solid one piece parts Slip seat for easy reupholstering
