The American Humane is the country's oldest national humane organization - one that extends its protection to animals and children, alike. American Humane positively impacts hundreds of millions of animals each year - more than any other organization in the world.

For hundreds of dogs and cats, a second chance at life was just a transport away. In late May, American Humane Association took part in two dramatic transcontinental transports to save more of the 3-4 million animals relinquished to shelters that are euthanized each year. This week-long, cross-country event was captured in a dramatic film that aired on national TV. The organization has saved and sheltered more than 81,000 animals in just the past 11 years.

American Humane works to help ensure the humane treatment of more farm animals than any other organization. Among other victories, Taco Bell which uses 130 million eggs per year nationwide, will switch to 100% American Humane Certified cage-free eggs by 2017. Peet's Coffee, Caribou Coffee, and Einstein Bros. Bagels all announced they will switch to cage-free eggs, and will be working with American Humane to improve farm animal welfare policies across their supply chains, benefiting millions more animals.

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons is guided by three core values: Compassion, integrity and dedication. Founded in 1974, they continue to validate our companion animals through their numerous programs designed to enrich lives and to educate.

We often hear the word "shelter". ARF has given new life to the meaning of that word by instituting very positive plans. They are a no-kill adoption center, adopting out approximately 1,000 animals per year. They have created an extensive intake facility that not only provides food and a warm cozy bed, but state of the art veterinary care. Where ARF is concerned, there is never an animal that is not worthy. They will care for animals with special needs, choosing not to euthanize them but extend the opportunity, for as long as necessary, to help them heal. Eventually, the goal is to find these pets the perfect adoptive home, no matter how long that might take.

There are times people find themselves in a position where they temporarily need help with their pets. Through the unique vision of ARF's directors, the People United with Pups, aka "PUP" program was started. "PUP" supports the precious bond between people and their pets during a crisis, a time when a cat or dog is often the only comfort left. Arranging for their care can be overwhelming. Knowing your pets are safe until you can be reunited with them provides a sense of peace and relief.

Whether it's the care and adoption of animals, providing temporary assistance for owners, putting a smile on the faces of the elderly with a pet therapy program, partnering with other rescue organizations, Operation Cat (trap, neuter, return) program, or leading the way with education, ARF is a premier facility enhancing the lives of animals and humans.

It is through these leading-edge programs that the Pet Philanthropy Circle has chosen Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons as the Pet Hero Award's Outstanding Shelter for 2013.

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals has faced enormous challenges. The vision was to transform the largest city in the United States into an urban environment where no dog or cat of reasonable health or temperament would be killed simply because they did not have a home.

As with any 501c3, funding was a serious issue. Though the name might imply that this effort has been financed by the city or by Bloomberg the NYC Mayor in office during their inception in 2003, the alliance is a privately funded organization that actually gives money to the city.

With the guidance of Jane Hoffman, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals has been progressing steadily. Taking the shelter's Live Release Rate from roughly 20% of the animals admitted in 2003 to more than 80% in 2014 is a statistical triumph. To date, this organization, with the cooperation of over 150 partner rescue groups and shelters in the NYC and tri-state area, has saved over 250,000 animals.

Currently, the organization is focusing on three key initiatives; the Wheels of Hope transport program, the NYC Feral Cat Initiative, and the Adoption Events program. The Alliance has provided training and support services to more than 2,500 certified feral cat caretakers. The Alliance's adoption van brings dogs and cats for adoption "to the people" in neighborhoods throughout New York City. Their six Wheels of Hope vans have transported more than 85,0

00 dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals from Animal Care and Control of NYC facilities to rescue groups and animal shelters with the resources to find them new homes.

Their Helping Pets and People in Crisis Program is unique. During times of crisis they provide assistance to people fleeing domestic violence, seniors requiring medical care, and to families facing eviction or other temporary setbacks. They also provide interim care with the hope of reunification.

Found Animals Foundation was initiated in 2005 by Dr. Gary Michelson whose patented inventions have helped millions of patients. Now, he and his wife, Alya focus on philanthropy. Fortunately, one of his many passions is the happiness and safety of animals. Found Animals is a privately-funded nonprofit dedicated to reversing the outcome for the three to four million animals euthanized each year in the United States.

Since inception, Found Animals programs have helped over 1,000,000 pets and their people through adoption, spay and neuter, micro-chipping and other initiatives. This foundation has provided more than $12 million in funding for dozens of research projects worldwide in pursuit of nonsurgical sterilization technology. They have also granted over $9 million to animal welfare organizations to support low-cost spay and neuter initiatives and pet reunification technology. More than 15,000 shelter animals have found homes through their adoption promotions and Adopt & Shop retail stores. With the devotion and leadership of Aimee Gilbreadth, the Executive Director, the Foundation has received the support of over 400 volunteers who have donated in excess of 45,000 hours of work.

The Pet Philanthropy Circle commends the accomplishments of the Found Animals Foundation and honors them with the 2015 Outstanding Foundation Pet Hero Award.

Pilots N Paws

Amazing how a South Carolina retired nurse's determination to adopt a rescue dog led to the formation of Pilots N Paws, an organization of over 2,600 pilots that volunteer their time, airplanes and fuel expenses to transport tens of thousands of shelter animals from certain death to safety. Amazing, that is, unless you know Debi Boies, Co-Founder.

Debi Boies, a long-time animal rescue advocate, wanted to save a Doberman Pinscher destined for "death row". She was aware of an existing organization of volunteers that coordinated a caravan of drivers, changing pets from vehicle to vehicle to reach their new homes, but realized the stress this caused to the pets. Discussing this dilemma with her friend, a private pilot Jon Wehrenberg, she thought for a moment. The light bulb went off. Flying! "Pilots look for reasons to fly," he told her, and as a result, Pilots N Paws was born.

Since their inception in 2008, Pilots N Paws continues to make a difference in the lives of innocent animals having flown thousands of rescue animals, among them military working dogs, animals with medical needs, and service dogs. The animals are almost always remarkably calm about the adventure. The pilots report, "It's almost as if they understand that this is their chance for life."

Pilots N Paws volunteer pilots have also assisted with dogs who have been adopted by our soldiers in war zones by transporting them to the soldiers' hometowns once the dogs arrive in the states.

This remarkable organization has grown in appreciation, trust and demand. Their pilots were involved with flying a Steppe eagle from Afghanistan, whom our Navy Seals rescued and saved after the eagle was shot. That eagle is now sharing space at Berkshire Bird Paradise with an American eagle.

Debi Boies and Pilots N Paws have received honors and awards from all over the country. Broadway Barks Award/Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, the American Dog Magazine's 1st Annual Humanitarian Award, the Augusta Humane Society's Casie Ritchhart Memorial Award, The Humane Society of Naples Animaltarian Award, the Dog Rescue and Relief Award, and the Pets and Heroes award from the Amazing Grace Foundation. She is listed as one of the top "25 Pet People of 2010" at Petside.com.

Soi Dog Foundation is the largest dog and cat welfare organization in southeast Asia. They have rescued and treated tens of thousands of street animals and have performed over 212,000 sterilizations. Soi Dog is also a leader in the fight against the dog meat trade, having virtually wiped out the industry in Thailand.

Soi Dog Foundation was established in 2003 in Phuket, Thailand, to provide a humane and sustainable solution to managing the stray dog and cat population and to address their medical needs. The organization's mission is focused on improving the welfare of dogs and cats in Asia, resulting in better lives for both the animal and human communities. Their goal is to create a society without homeless animals and ultimately end animal cruelty. They are currently spaying and neutering over 7,000 animals a month, which is believed to be more than any other organization worldwide. Their shelter, which houses 600 dogs and 200 cats, is the most modern in Asia, and their state-of-the-art dog and cat hospitals provide life-saving treatment to thousands of animals every year.

Soi Dog has expanded their campaign to wipe out the dog meat trade into South Korea, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian countries where the trade persists. Currently, they are working with the Hanoi city authorities to make the capital of Vietnam dog-meat free within three years. Soi Dog also provides on-the-ground emergency support for animals impacted by natural disasters, has implemented a school education program, and was instrumental in the introduction of Thailand's first animal welfare law.
