The artist, who graduated from The Art Institute of Chicago, draws from a rich cultural heritage and a diverse training in history, cultural anthropology, art and the law. His mother supervised the Ghana Ministry of Education, and his father co-wrote the republic's constitution and was a justice of its supreme court.

In Mr. Akainyah's words ``Loosely defined, art is probably the highest form of human expression. Culture, on the other hand, is the aggregate of concepts and values which characterize a community. People and culture are therefore inseparable.''

Mr. Akainyah's paintings first gained national attention when seen on the set of an NBC television movie, ``The Father Clements Story.'' One of the production crew members happened to see his paintings in the basement of a Chicago church and thought they would be perfect for the movie, according to Mr. Arku.

Among those who have purchased Mr. Akainyah's work are Michael Jordan, Samuel L. Jackson, Vice President Al Gore and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.
