Long after she moves on, Martha Haakmat's indelible mark will remain on the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School community. Her deft, compassionate, and steady leadership over the past six years has lead BHMS into new territory. In her tenure at BHMS, Martha has championed program excellence. Her enthusiastic support of professional development has allowed teachers in all programs to grow into their full potential as educators. Her commitment to equity and inclusivity has deeply enriched and opened our learning and our community. Martha steered us through a major capital campaign to complete our campus, creating our gorgeous roof with new space for athletics, art, and academics. Under her leadership, our Middle School has flourished to its fullest potential, and we have sent our graduates to an ever-growing list of the tri-state area's top high schools. Martha's clear and ambitious vision has nurtured and supported us through an important era of our school's history. In her tireless commitment to us, Martha's big heart and sharp intelligence have radiated to the far reaches of our community.
We are thrilled to recognize Martha's advancement of program excellence at BHMS by naming our library in her honor, and enhancing its offerings, with your generous support. The library is a cornerstone for every BHMS student, starting in the twos, right up through 8th grade. Every teacher, every staff member, and a whole host of parents and caregivers regularly find comfort and inspiration in our library. It is a gathering space for our community. It is where some of our oldest and youngest students come together each week for Reading Buddies. It is where we host incredible authors, illustrators and thinkers who bring us new perspectives and challenge us with big ideas. It is a place where our students and generations of students to come will explore how very big our world is, while curling up in a cozy oversized armchair.
