Howard's paintings often depict moments of intimacy between couples, who may be situated amid a geometric composition or an implied backdrop. In this graphite drawing Howard made in preparation for a larger painting, two figures kiss as one figure's hand hovers suggestively above the rectangular outline framing the image. Behind the figures, geometric shapes suggest a rudimentary cityscape. While Howard's paintings are known for their sharp juxtapositions of color, his drawings emphasize the artist's sense of subtlety and restraint.
Ridley Howard he received his undergraduate education at the University of Georgia and his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1999. Howard has cited a number of influences for his own practice, including Piero della Francesca, Alex Katz, and French New Wave cinema. He currently lives and works in Athens, GA, with his wife, the artist Holly Coulis.
