Richard Baker untitled (Tulip and Cityscape) charcoal on paper 1999

image: 36 x 20 inches frame: 44 1/4 x 27 1/2 inches

Richard Baker was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1959. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore (1977-79) and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA (1979-81).

Still-life painter Richard Baker speaks of himself as "in love with the surfaces of this world." He is best known in Provincetown for his renderings of the humble tulip tucked into ribbons of foliage, and for his affectionate, compelling portraits of iconic paperback book covers.

Baker has been doing book portraiture exhibits at Albert Merola Gallery in Provincetown, which he joined 25 years ago, since 2004. Expect a sizable crowd at the 8 p.m. opening of his new show at Merola on Friday, June 30, at 424 Commercial St., because Baker, now in his late 50s, has long had a local following, as a Fine Arts Work Center fellow and visual arts coordinator, and as a member of the legendary Group Gallery. He also shows his still lifes at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York.
