Bernie Brown
Bernie Brown, a preacher's kid, began his career as a bag boy in a local grocery store and retired as the CEO of one of the largest non-profit health care systems in the country. At the age of 31, he became the administrator of a major hospital (Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, GA) and spent the next 30 years learning how to be its leader. When appointed, his institution's budget was $10 million and it employed around 700. When he retired as CEO, the health system (WellStar) which had evolved had a budget of $1.5 billion with a workforce of almost 15,000.
Since "retiring" Bernie has focused on "re-firing" through teaching, speaking, mentoring, consulting and writing. Five of his eight books have been publish after he retired. These include Lessons Learned on the Way Down - A Perspective on Christian Leadership in a Secular World, (now in its third edition), Purpose in the Fourth Quarter - Finishing the Game of Life Victoriously, Snookie and Bernie are Sweethearts - An Anatomy of a Marriage, Road Signs on the Journey Home - Fifty Two Modern-day Proverbs, and Adventures of the Bass Buddies - Tales of Fun, Folly, Friendship, Faith and a Little Fishing.
All proceeds from Bernie's books go to charitable organizations.
Bernie, a Christian, is active in his local church. He claims to be a practitioner and not a theologian when he speaks and sings at retreats, conferences, worship services and other events for business organizations, educational institutions and churches. He is an aspiring golfer, an adequate woodworker and an avid fisherman. He has been married for 54 years, and he and his beautiful wife, Snookie, have three children and eight grandchildren.
