FROM A MOVING CAR: Drawings
"I started to draw from a moving car a number of years ago. As a passenger, highway images fly by at breakneck speed. I draw in a frenzy trying to catch a glimpse of something that has already passed my vision. A truck becomes a lamp post or a billboard becomes a tree, etc. It's an enjoyable game of juxtaposing images on top of one another and discovering a different dimension. I have come to love the immediacy of line and gesture and the approach has significantly spilled into my paintings and prints as well"

The artist Patricia Hopkins Barnes is an award-winning oil painter. She studied drawing, watercolor, and oil painting at Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, graduating with a BFA in Art History. She earned her Masters at University of Wisconsin. Barnes specializes in oils that capture the heart of Provincelands with a bit of fancy now and then. Patricia's work has been sold nationally and internationally. She is affiliated with Eastwind Gallery in Orleans. Barnes lives in Dennis, MA with her husband, Haldor Peter Barnes.

Benjamin Burch is an artist and illustrator whose lifelong travels and exposure to cultures around the world shape his creative perspective. Influenced by mid-century modern design and animation, Burch has worked as a visual development artist for DreamWorks and Laika Studios, illustrated Little Golden Books, contributed artwork to Disneyland's WonderGround Gallery and served as an art director on a Sesame Workshop series creating educational content for refugee children.

Artist Statement

"With my eyes closed, I am surrounded by ocean waves, falling snow, prismatic sunsets, or swaying sea grass. The air is fresh and inviting. Imagining nature's song playing for me, a sense of calm takes over as I relish a familiar journey. Residents of Harwich, Massachusetts, my boys, husband, and I love our Cape Cod community. I am always making note of my next painting from our surroundings.

Graduating magna cum laude from Franklin Pierce University, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Communications including minors of Fine Art and Art History in 1996. In addition to graphic design, my early studies included life drawing, glassblowing, and photography; I later concentrated my fine arts studies on painting."

LESLIE KRAMER

Leslie Kramer is a Cape Cod printmaker who earned her MFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design and studied at Stanley William Hayter's renowned Atelier 17 in Paris. She taught printmaking for 26 years at Elmira College and has also taught at Smith College and RISD. Her work has been exhibited across the country and is held in collections including the deCordova Museum and Boston Public Library. Kramer's original prints draw inspiration from nature, travel, architecture and letterforms, exploring the space between representation and abstraction.

Sara David Ringler is a Cape Cod printmaker, book artist and longtime art educator whose work spans etching, monotype, woodcut, mixed media and handmade books. She earned her MFA from UMass Dartmouth and taught drawing, design, printmaking, papermaking and book arts at Cape Cod Community College. Her work has been exhibited extensively on Cape Cod and beyond, including at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

LIZ PERRY

Liz Perry is a painter and printmaker specializing in mixed media and printmaking. She received her BFA in printmaking from Alfred University's College Of Ceramic Arts, where she studied primarily with printmaker and photographer John Wood. For the last 45 years, she has continued to study and teach many forms of printmaking, including collagraph, multiple plate linocut, monoprint, drypoint, mixed media and encaustic painting. She is an active member of the CCMoA, Chatham Creative Arts Center, PAAM and is the owner of Blue Jacket Studios in Brewster. Liz has spent many years volunteering and introducing kids and teens to the process and pleasures of printmaking. She presently teaches adult art classes at the Chatham Creative Arts Center. Perry is Co-President on the board of The Printmakers of Cape Cod and has been a member of PCC for 38 years.

MARY DOERING

Mary Doering grew up in rural North Dakota. She studied design at the University of Minnesota, Ceramics at the Museum School of Pittsburgh and received a degree in Psychology from Lesley College. She taught Ceramics in Connecticut and Art for the Mind Body and Spirt in Massachusetts. She has won awards both national and internationally for her art and photography. Mary is a founding member of Artsynergies, a group of artists dedicated to expressing their vision using the best of traditional and technological tools. A member of the Printmakers of Cape Cod and Boston Printmakers, she creates highly layered works incorporating elements of her original drawings, paintings, monoprints and photographs. Her work has received national and international recognition and has been exhibited throughout Cape Cod and beyond.

Barbara Ford Doyle was born and raised on a small farm in Connecticut. She attended UMass Amherst and Southern Connecticut University, majoring in art education. Moving to Cape Cod, she taught art/photography in public schools and published a line of stationery products. She maintains a website of alternative photo imaging and is a founding member of the digital artist group ArtSynergies.

"My paintings employ the use of color as the primary subject. I am referring to the relationship of the colors working together as a whole. I strive to create an atmosphere, mood and experience through color alone. The color relationships in these paintings percolate for months before completion. They are comprised of bands of hand-painted acrylic on BFK Rives paper. The segments of painted paper are collaged onto an archival board which stands out from the wall an inch in order to project a colored shadow surrounding the work. This glow will connect to the surface enriching the subject of the painting. In the transition from one color to the next, hues will shift, razor thin edges appear, and vibrations occur. The titles of the paintings are alliterations which describe the character of the subject color. The paintings are present the viewer with color relationships which may trigger a memory or be a new experience, but all are intended to allow the viewer a moment to pause and observe the power of color."
