The General Fund supports all of the essentials for our herd, such as

• Injections for navicular disease and osteoarthritis
• Daily medications for joint health
  
• Medication and supplements for Cushing's Disease
  
• Vet Care (routine and emergency)
  
• Farrier visits every 5 weeks
  
• Daily essentials such as: hay, grain, bedding and other supplements

Some of the routine costs we pay for the care of our herd include...

• Grain for their meals and bedding/shavings for their stalls = $900 - $1,200 every three weeks
  
• Hay (essential for maintaining nutrition, proper weight, and oral health) = $11,000 per year
  
• Equioxx (for osteoarthritis pain management) = $8,500 per year
  
• Adequan injections (for osteoarthritis) - $400 per horse
• Osphos injections (for navicular syndrome) = $400 per horse
• Farrier (ie. hoof care) = $965 every 5 week cycle, amounting to ~$10,000 annually

Brick, born in 2000, is a strawberry roan appaloosa gelding who came to us in fall 2019. He was a show horse for his owner for several years before retiring from his show days and coming to work with us. He is our gentle giant - sweet and calm.

Jazz, born in 2004, is a black and white Overo Paint horse gelding. He started with Helping Horse in May of 2016. Jazz is the quiet, persistent one in the pasture that tries to become the lead horse, but not always successfully. He is a little goofy and makes us laugh often.

Sponsor Sampson's care for 1 year: September 1 2026- August 31, 2027

Sampson is a 20yo (born 2006) Haflinger gelding who came to us in June 2023. He is trained in the Parelli training program and is very proficient at it. His main experience is in trail riding and a little jumping. Sampson was quickly welcomed into our program and seems to be enjoying his new job. He is one of our few horses who is capable of carrying our adaptive saddle which helps our riders who need some more upper-body support.

Gena Rose, a 23 yo (born 2003) Tennessee Walking Horse mare, is our resident unicorn! She joined our herd in 2023 and quickly made friends with her pasture mates, Es and Rajun. She loves to have her mane and tail decorated for events, then pose for the camera like the beautiful supermodel she is. She's a fast walker and is ready for any obstacle you throw in her way. Participants in our First Responders and Veterans Program often choose to partner with her because of her loving, peaceful nature.

Esmeralda (or "Es"), born in 2005, is a Quarter Horse mare who came to us from a local rescue in early 2014. She arrived blind in her left eye and in 2019 had that eye removed due to infection, then immediately seemed happier in her day-to-day life. She doesn't let her limited sight stop her from being an excellent therapeutic horse.

Rajun, born in 2007, is a dark bay Quarter Horse mare who came to us in July of 2020. Rajun's owner used her in lessons for many years until Rajun started having some slight joint issues and needed to lessen her duties. Rajun is sweet and very curious about her surroundings. She loves to relax in her pasture, but only if her buddies are with her!

Dixie, a Quarter Horse mare born in 2012, has been a tried and true member of our Helping Horse herd since 2018. She was a show pony in her previous career, but after an unfortunate injury, she needed a little lighter workload and found Helping Horse to be the perfect fit. She takes pride in her job, supporting both brand new riders, as well as those working more independently and off lead. No matter what, Dixie brings her A-Game to her students and her classes!

Rowan, a 10 year-old chestnut quarter horse, is one of our newest horses at the farm. He joined us towards the end of 2025 and has already settled into the program as one of our go-to big boys! He's a young gelding with a sweet, curious nature and loves receiving attention from our volunteers and participants. In his past career, Rowan was a show horse, so he's very comfortable around an energetic and excited crowd, such as our group lessons and our showcase week. We're thrilled to have this young lad in our program and grateful that he'll be with us for many years to come!

Pixie, born in 2003, is a Quarter Horse Paint who came to our herd in summer 2024, standing 15 hands. She started her career as a lesson horse and was quickly snatched up by her current owner to become a one-woman horse for the rest of her career. She has done a little of everything including hunter jumper, trail riding, and English shows. Her name came from the fact that she has a streak of white running through her tail that looks like pixie dust. In the program, she's a steady quiet mount that works well with our new riders and our riders learning to be off lead.

Dually, born in 2005, is a spotted Draft Horse cross standing around 15.2 hands. He is a relatively new addition to the Helping Horse herd, joining in summer of 2024. He comes from a trail horse background and is great for our program because he has the size and sturdiness of a draft horse but isn't too tall. He's our biggest horse (not tallest), but is a gentle giant. He has a huge fan club, fulfilling our dreams of knowing a handsome, noble steed like in the classic movies. You can't help but smile when you see this big guy chase after the hay-filled golf cart during feeding time!
