Complementing this remarkable artwork is a private experience at the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove. Guided by Bird Care Coordinator Carey Wentz, you'll go inside the bird enclosure area for an up-close encounter with these birds while learning about their stories, care, and the role they play in inspiring wildlife conservation.

Artist Statement

Turn a Blind Eye explores notions of groupthink. Bombarded with a mass of vibrancy and cheery appeal by a wall of yellow canaries one scans back and forth, here and there, eyes wandering over the same turned heads and faces, continually hoping for one to catch your eye, longing for any kind of a connection. They ignore one's plea, frozen to their posts unwilling to break ranks. One's desire for their acknowledgement falls on deaf ears in this exercise in futility.

In our installation for The Clay Studio's exhibition, Making a Difference, a large group of canaries is displayed directly across from our neon sign This Way Lies Madness… The space of dissonance and disorientation activated between these two pieces leaves one seemingly trapped between a sentinel species that ignores one's attention and a sign that demands it.

Artists Biographies

Tim Berg and Rebekah Myers are a studio art collaborative based in Claremont, California. Berg and Myers have participated in multiple solo exhibitions and their work has been included in many private and public collections. Berg works as a Professor of Art at Pitzer College in Claremont, CA. Berg received his MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, NY in 2003 and BFA magna cum laude from the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO in 2000. Myers works as a Visiting Lecturer in Art at Pitzer College. Myers received her BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO in 2000 and continued her studies in graphic design at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA.

Artists Biographies

Johnson

Duwenavue Sante Johnson is a BIPOC artist with a rich heritage spanning both the northern and southern regions of the United States over the past four centuries. This diverse upbringing has significantly shaped Johnson's artistic lens, fostering a relentless quest for equilibrium, aesthetic allure, and steadiness within her masterpieces.

Cercel

Vasile Cercel was born in Bacău, Romania. He graduated from the Bucharest National University of Arts, Faculty of Decorative Arts and Design, Ceramics-Glass-Metal Department, specializing in ceramics. He was vice-president of the Union of Visual Artists from Romania and president of the Decorative Arts Section. In 1988, the UAP awarded him the Prize for Decorative Arts, and in 2004, the Presidency of Romania honored him with the Order of Cultural Merit in the rank of Commander for his work in the field of Fine Arts. His work has been shown around the world and is included in museum collections throughout Europe and North America. His sculpture included in this package is an unglazed porcelain slab with an impressed early American flag design, created for and exhibited in the groundbreaking Contemporary East European Ceramics in 1992.

The design is a response to the 2026 Canadian Wildfires. The quilt block geometry combines "windmill" and "flying geese" elements bordered with open angular forms that create movement and implied threat. Selected leaves create a warm palette with the internal color variation of the Dogwood and Plum leaves suggesting flames or embers. The leaves used on the right border were from a White Oak tree that was lost due to the microburst storm of 2026.

About the location

The Museum for Art in Wood comprises the gallery for changing exhibitions, the permanent collection, the Fleur & Charles Bresler Research Library, the Len Scherock Museum Store, and the Earl Powell Artist Research Files. It also organizes arts residencies, which are held on an annual basis, and provides in-person and virtual talks and activities.
In its location in Old City, the Museum offers free admission to its changing exhibitions and access to its permanent collection, which now numbers some 1,400 objects and includes turned objects, sculpture, studio furniture, works on paper, video, and more. One of the most extensive institutional collections of contemporary art in wood, the collection serves as a growing document of this field. The Museum's research library consists of over 26,000 images, artist files, and books that chart the history of wood turning and woodworking and their continuing evolution within the broader field of contemporary art.
In November 2026 through March 2027 they will host a solo exhibition of wood artist Donna Dodson, titled Match of the Matriarchs. This show centers on a monumental, interactive chessboard featuring 32 life-size, movable chess pieces hand-carved from salvaged wood. Modeled on female archetypes and marine beings-cephalopods, cetaceans, and mermaids-Dodson's sculptures transform the traditionally hierarchical game into a speculative arena of matriarchal power and ecological symbolism. Long coded as a test of masculine intellect and mastery, chess in this match becomes a site of reversal: the queen's latent authority resurfaces, and new strategies come into view. Working with reclaimed wood-its ranging tones and scars visible to all-Dodson aligns chess with material memory, presenting the game as a dynamic system of multi-generational wisdom, stratagem, and transformation over domination.

About the Site

Historic Yellow Springs is a living village steeped in distinguished history that stirs the imagination of all who visit. The village has been a place of resort for more than 300. Today, it includes 11 buildings and 142 conserved acres . Historic Yellow Springs hosts a wide range of fine art, sculpture and ceramic classes for adults and children and is home to one of the best regarded art shows in the region. The campus is a beautiful venue for weddings and events and has numerous trails for all who visit to enjoy. The grounds have hosted George Washington and his army, leading 19th century political figures, several thousand orphaned children, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a motion picture studio.

Location Information

Cliveden

Built as a country house for attorney Benjamin Chew, Cliveden was completed in 1767 and was home to seven generations of the Chew family. Cliveden has long been famous as the site of the American Revolutionary War Battle of Germantown in 1777, as well as for its Georgian architecture. New research is unearthing a more complicated history at Cliveden, which involves layers of significance, including the lives of those who were enslaved by and in service to the Chew family. This information broadens the meaning of Cliveden as a preserved historic place, exploring themes and stories of American identity and freedom. Traces of the history of the Cliveden property and its occupants can be found throughout the five-and-a-half-acre woody landscape.

Cliveden invites and gathers the community, educates students, teachers and public visitors and in a safe space, convenes vital conversations about history, race, culture, class, gender, civics and current events. We preserve this special place for community use and for future generations.
