Printmaking

15 x 15 in.

Artist Bio

Liana Faletto is an artist and educator, working primarily in printmaking and illustration. A largely self-taught printmaker, Liana's print practice was born from experimentation while studying various print techniques.

Her work is primarily rooted in monotype, a process that allows for versatility and impulsive trial. Through an intuitive and additive approach to composition, her monotype prints take shape from unplanned reactions to color, form, and the materials around her. Viewers are compelled to look closer and notice moments of movement in curves and directional lines as well as delicate details like etched plates, unique textures, and embossments.

A Chicago native, Liana received her BA in visual arts education from DePaul University where she began experimenting with printmaking in 2011. She is an active exhibiting member of the art and print community in Chicago.

Digital degradation series 2

Sculpture

3 x 2.5 x 4 in.

Artist Bio

As an Artist a recent part of my process has been the investigation of various sculptural techniques such as Metal Casting, 3D modeling, and Slip Casting to create figures. I am interested in the tactile nature of producing objects in the round, the series of inversions that occur to produce cast metal objects, and the dialogue between internal and external environments. The figures in my work are often imaginary, representations of nostalgia based on my childhood in South Florida. The cultural distinctions and overlap between southern black/caribbean culture and inner city chicago black culture provide a crucible for camaraderie/solidarity. The materiality of cast bronze, aluminum, iron and ceramics give nebulous concepts and digital artifacts weight and gravity. The rigidness of sculptural form contrasts with the wiry, ductile nature of memory. The more a memory is remembered or replayed, longed for or seen through rose tinted glasses the more corroded it becomes over time. Akin to the re-taping of a VCR or the wearing down of soles. Memory is eventually broken down and digested.

Caution

Painting

15 x 27 x 0.59 in.

Artist Bio

Carlos Matallana My illustration tool is ink/pen on paper, I rely on high contrast and its expressionism qualities. I prefer to illustrate my characters from the back like an anonymous quiet observant. I enjoy illustrating full body characters standing or in movement revealing attitudes and feelings through posture or even clothing instead of facial expressions.

I found, however, that Illustration was not as persuasive as education (specifically new media), where I had the chance to interact with students from diverse environments and learn from their experiences. Education led me to develop role--play games as pedagogical tools, and challenge youth to foster and develop their own ideas, then share it throughout new media (Websites, Podcasts, etc). Always aiming to gain space in virtual spaces for Black and Brown experiences.

Both disciplines (Illustrator and Education) convey my working experience, and research into complex issues, including violence, urbanism, economics, and housing, which motivates me to question my position as a father, educator and artist, then challenge the audience to reflect about their role in a complex -rich urban society as Chicago.

What Does it Say?

Painting

10 x 10 in.

Artist Bio

Most of my work is figurative in nature. It explores how people who inhabit the same space physically, can experience completely different realities based on their identities. My latest pieces explore the intersecting worlds and experiences of mother and child.

My work is also about relationships, between people and between objects. I am interested in power dynamics, and the group vs. the individual. In my drawings and paintings I enjoy playing with the tension between two and three-dimensional space, and I explore how shapes, lines and textures can evoke emotions and memories.
