Catherine Hess
$350CATHERINE HESS
THE WAY TO THE BAY, 2024
Value: $575
Catherine Hess has been showing and selling her art for over 25 years. A long-time annual visitor and later part time resident on Cape Cod, she became a year- round resident of Wellfleet in 2021. At first working exclusively in watercolors, she has painted largely with oils for the past decade. She also creates monotypes, known as "painterly prints" and white line or "Provincetown prints". While regularly painting figures and portraits, her primary focus is Cape landscapes, most often done "plein air" or onsite. She loves being immersed in the outdoors, and it shows in her paintings of dunes, marshes, shorelines and iconic buildings. She aims to capture the feeling of a scene- its light, its movement, and its textures, which she often uses palette knives to achieve. She is particularly drawn to painting the day-to-day, season-to-season, and year-to-year changes in Cape landscapes. Catherine has shown her work extensively on the Cape, at art museums and centers, as well as galleries. She has been included in special exhibits at Addison Art Gallery and Garvey Rita Art and Antiques, both in Orleans, and has exhibited at The Works Gallery in Wellfleet since 2021. Ruth Hogan Artwork
Live ItemRUTH HOGAN, Art in the Garden
Artist's Proof, White-Line Woodblock Print, 1988
Image: 9" x 14" | Framed: 17" x 21"
A rare opportunity to own a true piece of Cape Cod Museum of Art history, this Artist's Proof captures the Museum's 1988 'Art in the Garden' celebration, depicting guests enjoying the celebration with the original Cape Cod Museum of Fine Art building as the backdrop. More than a beautiful work of art, this proof serves as a visual time capsule, preserving an important chapter in the Museum's history and the vibrant community of artists that have long gathered to support it.
Created by acclaimed white-line printmaker Ruth Hogan, Art in the Garden exemplifies the bold color and handcrafted beauty of the Provincetown white-line woodblock tradition. Although Hogan grew up in Texas, her artistic roots run deep on Cape Cod through her great-aunt, Elizabeth Howland Caliga, one of the founding members of the Provincetown Printers. She also studied with artists Robert Douglas Hunter and Ferol Warthen in Provincetown. Inspired by that legacy, Hogan embraced representational scenes filled with warmth and vivid color, believing art should celebrate the joy found in everyday life.
This impression is especially significant as an Artist's Proof (AP), a rare print retained by the artist during the creative process before the principal edition was completed. Because each white-line print is individually hand-painted and hand-rubbed from a single carved woodblock, every impression is unique, making Artist's Proofs especially sought after by collectors.
For collectors of Cape Cod art, admirers of the Provincetown white-line tradition, and supporters of the Museum alike, this exceptional work offers the rare chance to own both an outstanding print and a lasting piece of the Cape Cod Museum of Art's legacy.
