Janell Bauer began focusing her artistic energies on acrylic paints about 10 years ago under the tutelage of Odin Smith at CCAC. Bauer grew up in Western Massachusetts and moved to Cape Cod in 1987 with her family. DAVID PHILLIPS, SANDWICH, MA

David Phillips is among the most accomplished public sculptors working in Massachusetts, with a career spanning nearly six decades. His work explores the dynamic relationship between geometry and nature, often drawing upon spiral forms, growth patterns, and structural systems found in the natural world. Working in bronze, stone, stainless, steel, wood, and other materials, Phillips has created both intimate studio works and large-scale public commissions integrated into architectural and landscape environments. Phillips' sculptures are installed in numerous civic spaces, including seven parks in Boston and five in Cambridge, as well as additional commissions throughout the United States and internationally, including Japan. Across all contexts, his work reflects a sustained engagement with material integrity, mathematical proportion, and the dialogue between constructed form and the living landscape.

"In this Braille series, I incorporate found Braille pages, fragments of coded language whose content remains inaccessible to most viewers. I use perforated metal plates and other metal elements to mask areas of the paper. I then apply a propane torch to char and burn the exposed sections, allowing the flame to reveal new textures and contrasts as the language shifts toward abstraction. I cut and reassemble the pages to create new graphic forms"

Patricia Stark Feinstein is a painter, teacher, writer, and curator who has worked in New York and on Cape Cod. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Cork Gallery and Atlantic Gallery in NYC and at the Provincetown Art Association, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Harvest Gallery in Dennis, MA, among other venues. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College with dual degrees in studio art and art history, Pat studied with Sam Feinstein whose classes continued the Hans Hofmann modernist philosophy of art. She and Sam were married in 1985 and for two decades they together taught painting workshops in Michigan and Toronto. Pat has curated and lectured on the art of Sam Feinstein and is author of the monograph about his work. For twenty-two years Pat taught painting, drawing and the history of art and western culture at Riverdale Country School in New York City while summering and painting on the Cape. Patrica serves as a Trustee on the Board of the Cape Cod Museum of Art. She resides in Brewster.

JOYCE GROEMMER, MARSTON MILLS MA

A resident of Marstons Mills, Joyce Groemmer received her B.A. in Studio Art from Bates College and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the summer of 1980. For more than 15 years, Joyce painted primarily in soft pastels, but now also works in a variety of mixed media including gouache, watercolor and ink.

Rocks, waves and fields inspired by Cape Cod, Maine and Utah, are recurring subjects in Joyce's representative paintings and continue to influence her abstract work.

Joyce's artwork has been shown in numerous juried exhibitions on Cape Cod and also in groups shows including: Cape Cod Waters: Salty & Fresh, Woodruff's Art Center (September, 2020) and Cape Cod: An Artist's View, Cape Cod Maritime Museum (Winter 2019). Monica Rozak is a landscape painter who currently lives in Eastham, Massachusetts. She has walked all over Cape Cod studying and taking in the light of the sea, sky and dunes for over twenty five years. Painting for her was a lifelong dream. It was the changing moods and light of the Cape that made it inevitable. Prior to painting in oils, Monica spent time as a printmaker and had a longtime career as a sculptural fiber artist. When she turned to painting, she studied under the tutelage of artists whose work she admired, Rick Fleury and John David Wissler among others. For a few years, she worked as Rick Fleury's studio assistant. Monica's paintings have been available at The Burdick Art Gallery in Wellfleet, Weekend in East Orleans and The Artful Hand in Chatham, as well as on her website. Her work is in private collections in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Texas and Glasgow, Scotland. She has completed many private commissions including several large paintings for Cape Cod Healthcare, now hanging in JML Care Center in Falmouth. Artist Statement

"After moving from New York City to Cape Cod in 1981, I apprenticed with architect Grattan Gill before establishing my own architectural practice, which I led for more than 30 years. My work included residential projects of all scales and an eight-year collaboration with Chatham Bars Inn. I hold a BFA in Sculpture, a degree in Architecture, and an MAT in Art Education. in 2008, an architectural client invited me to create a sculpture for their garden, reconnecting me with my early interest in sculpture. That experience, together with the opportunities for online study during the pandemic - particularly 2D courses through the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum - inspired my return to art after closing my architectural practice in 2017. I continue to study with Laura Shabott and take sculpture classes at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and Cape Cod Museum of Art. My work in both two and three dimensional media is intuitive and often unplanned. Beginning with material, line, shape or color, I respond to observation, education and instinct."

"During my career as a psychotherapist, I have seen the beauty of the soul emerge; although frequently obstructed with layers of murky defense and protection. Encaustic art represents to me a similar experience of process, particularly with the layering process, as one continues to scrape until the beauty and truth of the piece is revealed. This uncertainty is exciting for it presents surprises as well as mystery, which can lead us to unimaginable places similar to the process of self-discovery. I love working with encaustic medium, with hot messy wax, with pigment and vibrant colors. They stimulate the viewer to wake up, to notice, to feel, to experience their thirst, their heat, their hope, their strength, and struggle, all mixed in with the joy of being alive. My intention is that this art will take you beyond thought to experience.

I have studied at the Decordova, School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Helen Day Arts Center.

I also studied with artists such as Lorraine Glessner, Tracy Spadafora, Gregory Wright, Laura Moriaty as well as a fabulous watercolorist, Lisa Forster Beach of Stowe Vt.

Truro Center for the Arts has been a favorite teaching school and I have been attending their Encaustic Conferences for seven years with world famous artists."

Artist Statement:

Human stories, relationships, and interactions are the inspiration for my paintings. Figurative Expression is the style that describes my work. The model's body, pose, and energy create the foundation from which the painting evolves starting with the placement of the figure on the canvas and forming a composition. I am an emergent painter. I start with an idea but then what I see determines where I take the painting. Thus, I may start going in one direction but continually change course as the painting evolves. The mood and atmosphere in the room influence color choices, light and shadows, movement and repetition.

I enjoy making series. Some evoke stories with a common theme such as couples in dialogue. Others depict groups of people in movement together. Others are still life done in various colors or levels of abstraction. My goal is to create figuration in some kind of context whether it be abstract, atmospheric or somewhat representational. Sometimes it flows and sometimes it's a struggle.

I find if I can work through the noise in my head to a deeper consciousness happy accidents of magic occur. The most significant example was during the takeover of the capital on January 6, 2022. I was so distraught listening to the news I started painting figures and not realizing I kept turning the canvas around. The outcome was a melee of figures interconnected so that the canvas could be viewed from any direction. A series of paintings with that orientation followed.

Painting can be very meditative. When beginning, it helps to cover the surface with a wash or some color other than white and use a limited palette. I often depict models in a class or life drawing but then go back to the quiet or music in my studio to let the process begin and ideally give into a deeper consciousness to bring life to the painting.

It was their playground and work place in the summer. They enjoyed its beauty, simple pleasures and their conversations with the local residents. McMurtry is sure these early years influenced his interest in the arts. He had the pleasure of working at the KayMar Gallery and Studio with Kay Berrien, Mitzi Peterson, David Grose, and Ric Howard producing silkscreened prints for New York. His uncle Arthur McMurtry was a well-known watercolorist also in Dennis. He went on to get his degree in graphic design and advertising at Mass College of Art. After serving his tour of duty in the Navy he established a graphic design studio and gallery in Dennis for 10 years including working as staff photographer for the Cape Playhouse. He also worked 8 years as a designer for Digital (DEC) and then 15 years for the HayGroup providing key visuals for international work with Fortune 500 companies, later retiring to Dennis with his wife. McMurtry's photography has always been about capturing and sharing the beauty of the Cape and places he has visited. He offers these photos from past and present hoping they'll bring others the same pleasure that drew him to Dennis so many years ago.

Cape Cod artist Les Longworth lived in New England and had a love affair with its historical architecture and coastal scenes. He began painting in watercolor in 1987 and furthered his mastery of the medium through studies at the De Cordova Museum, at workshops and with George Shedd AWS for a year. Longworth had a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art, and was an award winning artist in numerous juried shows throughout New England. His special gift for realistic and dramatic portrayal of historic objects brought excitement and nostalgic charm that captured the essence of "that" that is New England. It wasn't until college that Neil's dialogue with clay started when he studied figurative and Renaissance art in Rome, Italy. After getting out of college and working in the sports marketing world, Neil took ceramics classes at multiple institutions studying with some of our nation's leading ceramicists.

Neil started working in ceramics in Santa Barbara, CA, where he deepened his artistic commitment, began working in clay full time and started the search for his artistic voice. Neil then moved his home and studio to Lake Arrowhead, CA and then Sedona, AZ.

Neil's pieces are represented in many collections in the South West, Southern California and New England. His ceramic pieces range from functional thrown forms to coil and slab-built figurative sculptures. His current clay pieces meld thrown forms, slabs, altering, incising and sculpting.
