Scarecrow Cab Sauv 2009 Case

From the Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley, this is a rich, loamy, and layered wine with a riveting expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. Extraordinary aromas of dark fruits lead to a full-bodied palate with velvety, superbly balanced tannins. Rated 96 points by R. Parker. Only about 1,000 cases of the 2009 Cabernet were bottled, an extremely limited production that grows harder to find with each passing year. Scarecrow has become one of Napa Valley's coveted 'cult' Cabernets, with demand far exceeding its small production, now available only from private sources in the US or on long-term pre-arrival from other countries. This original 3-bottle wooden case was purchased directly from the winery and has been stored in a 57-degree cellar since release.

The Harlan Estate is known for its excellence in creating red wines of impeccable quality. Founded by Bill Harlan with the goal of creating a California equivalent of a Bordeaux "first growth," Harlan's flagship wine has become one of the world's most sought-after California Cabernets. This 2008 is another expression of the great terroir of the hillside vineyards of the Harlan Estate. The deep red color indicates the near perfect extraction from the skins. The nose is elegant with pure dark berry fruit, cassis and blueberries. The oak is perfectly integrated into a freshness that is then found on the palate. The 2008 vintage earned 96 points from both Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator, 98 from James Suckling, and 95 from Stephen Tanzer. You will be "speechless" as you enjoy this spectacular wine from a Magnum. Aged since release in a 57-degree cellar.

Howell Mtn Burgess Cabernets

Tom Burgess founded Burgess Cellars in 1972, purchasing vineyards on the steep slopes of Howell Mountain, north of Yountville in Napa, that had first been planted in the 1870s. The rugged, high-elevation terrain stresses the vines, lowering yields but intensifying the flavor of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah grapes grown there. This collection includes the 2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, two bottles of the 2013 Cabernet Mountaineer, and a 2013 Barrel Select Cabernet personally signed by winemaker Kelly Woods.

As Joseph describes it, the challenge isn't understanding any one clone on its own, but appreciating the beauty in the marriage of clones when they're blended together.

From Kathy Joseph of Fiddlehead Cellars, two bottles of her 728 Bubbles Blanc de Noirs, a sparkling wine made using the traditional méthode champenoise from Pinot Noir grown in the Santa Rita Hills. Named for the 7.28-mile highway marker at the entrance to Fiddlestix Vineyard, this small-production sparkler is picked at low sugar and high acid for a lively, elegant style. This lot includes the 2010 and 2012 vintages.
