"This is a picture with many geometric shapes. There is a lot of red in the picture with circle colored red. The picture has a crisp cherry feeling."

-Artist Robert Miller

This print is produced on acrylic plexi.

"It gives me great pleasure to do art and be of service to others."

With over 40 years of creative experience, artist Robert Miller's (he/him/his) style has paralleled the growth of Chicago. Having lived in the city his entire life, he has a unique understanding of it. "The city experience can be good or bad." Robert elaborates, "I live for the positive things that happen. I use art as an outlet." Robert is an Army Reserves veteran and attends Thresholds, a community based mental health organization in Chicago where he creates his artwork.

Robert has a structured abstract style. "I start with a sketch," Robert describes. "When I paint in the sketch, I work from the least difficult to the most difficult." While his paintings are composed to create a feeling of stability, Robert's use of bold colors creates movement that challenges the structured composition. The values that guide Robert's life also guide his creativity: "Stay positive. Be creative. Give and help others," he explains.

"I think it (his art) will make them feel positive and happy," Robert shares when thinking about the impact being a part of ArtLifting will have on others. How Robert wants his art to affect others is the same way art has affected his life. When reflecting on how he has benefitted through his art practice, he says "I feel excited and creative. I feel relaxed and calm." Robert explains, "It helps me with my health."

ArtLifting advances access to the art market by connecting artists with disabilities to socially conscious customers, creating meaningful spaces and products.

Enjoy a one-of-a-kind art collection from none other than our amazing Champion, Amirah Richardson.

"I love to draw because it's creative and artistic! I'm a self-taught artist inspired by the beauty of nature and the magic of Disney. My art reflects my love for the outdoors, creativity, and the joy of bringing imagination to life." - Amirah

Both items are framed.

"Although my family is what's most important in my life, painting is what really keeps me going. It's what helps me express my joy, anger, sadness and forget about all the negative going on in or around me. It reminds me that I am not limited due to my disabilities, but the world is my canvas and I can paint every story I feel."

-Artist Yvette

Print is produced on acrylic plexi

ArtLifting advances access to the art market by connecting artists with disabilities to socially conscious customers, creating meaningful spaces and products.

Veteran artist Yvette (she/her/hers) has enjoyed a life-long connection to art. She was introduced to art and creativity in grade school but it wasn't until junior high that she was formally introduced to her creative soul. Yvette continued to sketch in her free time but her career in the military and time spent raising her children took priority over creating art. It wasn't until Yvette retired from the Army that she was able to fully reconnect and explore her creative soul.

Yvette spent over 20 years in the Army, managing a dining facility. Her goal for every person who had a meal in her facility is that a feeling of home and belonging was felt while they were there. Her desire to create familiarity and comfort within spaces has influenced her paintings in a profound way. In 2013 after Yvette had retired, she was helping her daughter move into an apartment, the artwork intended for the space didn't feel right, Yvette decided to paint something that would be right, creating a painting that embodied the feeling of home. When thinking about creating that painting Yvette remembers, "I felt it at that moment, like I was living my second life." Yvette has spent many of her days since painting in her studio.

She has not received any formal training, rather, learning from experience and videos she watches online. Her style is an intuitive one, the inspiration for a piece can come from anywhere. Yvette's paintings always begin with music, from that point she incorporates her mood, dreams, recent experiences, and most importantly the support and inspiration she receives from her family into each painting.

Painting has taught Yvette many important lessons over the years, the empowerment Yvette has gained through her art is perhaps the most powerful. "I am invincible. I truly can do or create whatever I feel. Abstract is my go to, however, with a little patience and guidance from YouTube tutorials, I can create anything and the only thing that can slow me down is running out of paint."

"This is one of my mixed-media images. Water, ink, crystal-minerals. I let the minerals dissolve and crystallize, then added the liquid materials. The trick always is to capture the image while elements are still interacting/kinetic--this process happens very fast before things turn to mud. The name-this and another similar piece remind me a lot of nuts and bolts and industry. Like many others, the meaning for me is experimenting and capturing something that surprises me."

-Artist Michael Van Huffel

This print is produced on acrylic plexi.

ArtLifting advances access to the art market by connecting artists with disabilities to socially conscious customers, creating meaningful spaces and products.

Michael Van Huffel (he/him/his) enjoyed a successful career as an artist, animator, Creative Director, and musician. His career got a jumpstart when he began working with the musician Prince, as a staff artist, and eventually, Art Director. He also has also worked in motion design, TV and movies, and served as Creative Director for numerous projects in advertising and entertainment.

In 2007, Michael unexpectedly developed myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) a devastating and poorly-understood neuroimmune condition. Michael began to face loss after loss. Unable to work and eventually housebound, his career, home, and the life he built were lost due to hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical co-pays. Life became very different and solitary. He relocated to a one-room studio outside San Francisco, and has been taking part in the largest-yet studies on his disease at Stanford. That room became his defacto art studio.

Michael describes that his life for 8 years turned into an isolated existence, that most relationships had become virtual, except for home infusion nurses and very occasional visitors. The most recent transformation in his art career, and what you see featured on ArtLifting, occurred when he received an iPhone on a family plan, and an artist friend suggested they start a photo-a-day project. Michael describes that "this became a search to find beautiful or interesting things within an apartment that had only been accumulating painful associations using numerous physical and technical limitations as a means to a unique style and meaning. This also unexpectedly led to a relationship, a partner - something that had long seemed a lost part of life."

Recently, his life has welcomed big changes and transitions. He got married and relocated to Santa Cruz. Michael can occasionally get outside for short walks and is now close to a lot of natural beauty. Nearly all of the photos use things he collects while outdoors. He then brings the objects, whatever they may be, back to photograph when he is feeling well enough. The photos are often expressionistic - an attempt to make things look like something other than what they are - such as paintings, sea creatures, or landscapes. He aims to convey emotions and feelings and for viewers to see and find interesting corners of his world.

To learn more about myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), please visit the Open Medicine Foundation and follow the groundbreaking study mentioned in Michael's bio. In addition, see the multiple award-winning documentary, Unrest, created by a woman living with the disease.

"This moving camera piece is a part of a large five-year series called 'Despite the Pain.' This piece is in the 'New Papillon (butterfly)' series and is in the 'Cocooned' subgroup. The whole series is about transformation of suffering into a greater path of evolution and takes inspiration from the Monarch butterfly's migration and the intense path of the universe. This piece, 'Matrix Mind' is about the vast consciousness accessible from within the Cocoon of isolation. As a former dancer, it felt natural to move with my camera and the colors are enhanced in a digital darkroom."

-Artist Laria Saunders

ArtLifting advances access to the art market by connecting artists with disabilities to socially conscious customers, creating meaningful spaces and products.

This print is produced on acrylic plexi.

Laria Saunders (she/her/hers) is a former dancer/photographer whose primary body of work is digital photo assemblage paintings.

Saunders was born in Boston and raised equally there and in New York and Los Angeles. She has lived in many places including, India, Czech Republic, Italy and Mexico.

After long period of isolation living in India, Saunders began experimental moving photography and worked exclusively for five years on a grand scale abstract collection in Switzerland, France and California. By moving with her camera, she created what she calls "earth swabs" to form a tiered collection with the evolution of the imagery growing in complexity every year and paralleling the migration of the Monarch butterfly and her own journey.

Laria has been battling debilitating pain for nearly three decades: Multiple Sclerosis, Transverse Myelitis (demyelination like MS), 17-22 migraines a month, Occipital Neuralgia and countless other painful conditions. Her atypical case has caused false or long delays in diagnosis and treatment. She is fortunate to have mobility, sensation and eyesight however, the pain caused her to live mostly in the dark with ice packs until 2021. Laria has sought treatments all over the world and has been hospitalized a total of 8 months for pain management (mostly in India). She has had six surgeries for pain and countless procedures under anesthesia. Due to many medication allergies, she has sought alternatives, such as having a permanent spinal cord stimulator implanted (SCS-electrical stimulation). Only recently has she been able to manage some of the full-body pain, and every year makes progress towards finding answers. Laria attributes her early obsession with meditation, enabling her to survive the Kafka-esque medical maze. "Hurting from head to toe and losing everything, allowed me to completely and utterly STOP and this turned out to be a great catalyst both spiritually and artistically."
