This poor boy had been living in an abandoned house all by himself. He went up the steep steps but then was too scared to come down! Thankfully, the neighbors saw him and called us. The wind was whipping on the second story, and our biggest snowstorm of the season was just hours away. We were only there for about 10 minutes, but we couldn't feel our hands or fingers by the time we leashed him up. We knew he had to be freezing. We named him Snow Mageddon, and we were so thankful to have been able to rescue this sweet guy. It didn't take long for him to find his forever family, and he will never have to worry about living in an abandoned house again.

Mazey arrived at Stray Rescue after a long transport from a small shelter in Alabama that knew she deserved a chance to survive. Her paw had been completely degloved, exposing the metacarpals in her wrist area, and no one knew how such a devastating injury had happened. Despite everything, Mazey remained happy, loving, and full of life.

The shelter that sent her here knew exactly where to turn. They knew the Stray Rescue community would step up for a dog like Mazey because supporters from St. Louis and all over the world have built a reputation for showing up for forgotten and injured animals when they need help most.

While the goal was to amputate her leg to finally give her relief, the infection was too severe for surgery right away. Her leg was badly
swollen, hot to the touch, and painfully infected, so the medical team first focused on getting the infection under control with antibiotics
and bandage changes until she was stable enough for surgery.

About a week after she arrived, Mazey underwent a successful amputation. She was a little confused at first, but that did not slow her
down! She quickly found her forever home, and we are so proud to have been a part of her story.

One of our first rescues of 2024, Bannister was rescued on a very cold day. Neighbors spotted him on their Ring cameras howling on their front porches. We took him immediately, and at first he was very reserved and shy. He was so skinny, arthritic, and just wanted to sleep and get warm. As time went on and he gained some weight, he became one of the most affectionate old men in the shelter. He gives hugs, kisses, and loves to get pets. He is a great walker, in fact he is often taken out by volunteer groups because he is so good. Bannister is coming up on TWO YEARS of living in the shelter, and all he wants is a home (and mainly a couch) to call his own. Bannister is ready to spend the rest of his golden years as the best friend you have always wanted.

Veto has been with us at Stray Rescue since April 2025. This guy is BEGGING to find his forever home, and we know that it's out there! He is the total package: sweet, smart, and ready to love! This handsome boy has all the adorable charm of a puppy, without the headaches that usually come with one. No chewed-up shoes here-Veto has great house manners and isn't one to get into trouble.

Veto is potty and crate trained, and he settles in well when it's time to relax. Like many other stray dogs, Veto can be a little protective over his food, so he must be crated during mealtimes for his safety and for the safety of furry and human family members. He is his best self with clear boundaries and a consistent routine.

Veto is dog-friendly, and he has so many friends here at the shelter. If you are looking for a well-mannered, lovable dog who is past the puppy chaos but still full of playful energy and affection, Veto might just be your perfect match!

Johnny Bravo is a calm, gentle, and exceptionally well-behaved boy who has quickly become a volunteer favorite at Stray Rescue of St. Louis. He's often chosen by staff and volunteers for outings and pair walks, which speaks to how trustworthy, friendly, and easygoing he is.

In his apartment at the shelter, Johnny is very chill and quiet - he rarely barks and doesn't react to the hustle and bustle around him. He shows excellent manners and settles in easily, making him a wonderful companion for a relaxed home
environment.

Johnny is a fantastic leash walker who truly enjoys his daily walks. He may be a little shy when first meeting new people, but with patience and kindness, he warms up beautifully. Once he feels comfortable, his playful side comes out - especially in the yard, where he loves running, exploring, and enjoying some fun before settling back into his calm nature.

He would thrive in a home that appreciates a gentle, steady companion and understands that the best bonds are built with trust and time. In return, Johnny offers quiet loyalty, sweet affection, and the kind of calm presence that makes every day a little brighter.

Malcolm is an island dog that came to Stray Rescue in 2020. Over the years, he has found safety and comfort in some of his favorite staff
members and volunteers. They take him for long walks, car rides, pack walks, and even swims! He is a true adventure buddy that loves his people hard. He benefits greatly from outings with his friends, and we are so grateful to the people who love him so much and give him breaks from the shelter and extra enrichment. Malcolm is a special guy who often brings a calming, intentional energy to those who are lucky enough to call him a friend.

Meet LOTI (Luck of the Irish)! LOTI came to us from a tiny shelter in 2023. She was untrusting of new people at first but came out of her shell as she worked with Stray Rescue staff and volunteers. LOTI is now 6 years old, and she would LOVE a home of her own. She is dog-selective, so she would do best in a home where she is the only pet. Her best shelter friends describe her as funny, cute, and 100% adorable. She is a great walking buddy, and she loves to go for car rides. Her friends here at the shelter simply adore her, and they are cheering her on to find her forever home sooner than later.

Boulder was found by a Good Samaritan. He was very skinny, and he was unaltered. After waiting through the stray hold to see if anyone came forward for him, we officially took Boulder into our care to get him healthy and into a home. He gained enough weight to be neutered, and he quickly turned into the healthy, grumpy-faced goofball that stole our hearts. Boulder spent some time in foster care to get used to living in a home, and he ultimately found his forever family.

Meredith came to us as a 5-month-old with a badly broken femur. She recovered from a reparative surgery and is ready for her forever home. The poor girl spent months with restricted activity. She will need a patient home to help teach her how to be the best dog she can be. Meredith has lots of puppy energy and loves other dogs. She is living in a foster home awaiting her forever home!

In April 2026, this 'ol girl came in so sick and weak. She was completely blind, wouldn't eat and could barely walk. Her x-rays showed she had an obstruction, so we scheduled an emergency surgery here at our shelter. Inside her belly was a whole bunch of rodent bones! Poor girl hadn't had a decent meal in who knows how long!

She did much better than we expected during her surgery (collective sigh of relief) and showed major improvement afterward. She was so happy and full of life!

Once she began healing and blossoming, we realized that she did not let her visual impairments stop her from anything! She was amazing at navigating life and was easily guided by your voice. She loved everyone - men, women, and kids, and had the sweetest, goofiest personality. It was no surprise to us that Miss Elsie quickly found a forever home, and we absolutely love getting updates on her new life full of nothing but love and goodness.
