Meet the tiny little girl we named Bumblebee. She came to us from a shelter that couldn't help her medically due to lack of resources. She had a left side femoral neck fracture. In other words, her thigh bone (femur) was broken and no longer connected to her pelvis. We couldn't stand the thought of this little baby being euthanized, so we transported her here right away. This is actually a common injury and one that we can fix right here in our clinic. Bumblebee did great for her surgery, and Dr. Oliver ended up adopting her! Bumblebee, now known as Rookie, is healing beautifully, and she will know nothing but love from here on out!

In April 2025, a pregnant mama was transferred to our care. We named her Hyacinth, and we were able to set her up with a Pregnant/Nursing Mom & Puppy foster who would take care of her while birthing her puppies and nursing them until they were ready to go out on their own. Pregnant/Nursing Mom & Puppy fosters are SO important to us at Stray Rescue, as they allow mama dogs to live in a peaceful, safe environment, and they provide great stability for puppies. Hyacinth ended up having ELEVEN healthy, beautiful babies in May 2025. She was a wonderful, attentive mama, and her babies were strong, healthy, and ready to go to their own foster homes when they were around 8 weeks old. Peony was adopted into his forever family in November 2025.

Sabertooth Tiger came in as a feral cat who had spent his whole life outside, avoiding people and just trying to survive. Like many feral cats, he had a caretaker who kept an eye on him-but when he stopped eating and started holding his head low in obvious pain, they knew something was very wrong.

At the clinic, x-rays revealed something shocking: a nail had gone straight through his jaw, likely from a nail gun. Miraculously, his jaw wasn't shattered, and Dr. Oliver was able to carefully remove it.

After surgery, Sabertooth Tiger started feeling much better and even began showing hints of his personality. He also had an old eye injury that wasn't healing and had already lost vision, so the team made the decision to remove it to help him fully recover.

As the days went on, he slowly started to trust his caregivers. That's when Cassady moved him into her office-and everything changed. Sabertooth Tiger turned into the snuggliest, most affectionate cat. He adores sitting in her lap, soaking up attention, and enjoying treats like Churus.

Sabertooth Tiger truly lives up to his name-a resilient little warrior-and his transformation shows just how powerful patience,
care, and love can be.

It's not a day in rescue if your heart doesn't stop a few times! One July afternoon, we received a call about a dog hiding out on the very busy Highway 55/64 in East St. Louis. He was hunkered down and shaking, not knowing where to go! After a little coaxing, Donna was able to rescue him safely! It turned out that Jet's original owner had given him away, and we tried to get a hold of the current owner. Without any luck, Jet quickly went to a foster family who fell in love with him and adopted him just two weeks later!

We received a call on a freezing cold January day that an emaciated dog was left chained to a fence. We had never taken so much pleasure in cutting a chain than we did his. He was so cold and covered in open wounds, but his soft, loving eyes let us know how grateful he was to be free. We named him Igloo, and we brought him back to the shelter and gave him so much love. Today, Igloo is living in a foster home being the silly, happy, and very playful dog that he always deserved to be. He is empathetic, loving, and easy going. Igloo will find his forever family one day, but until then, he is safe with us, and he will never be chained outside again.

On December 15th, a Good Samaritan found Creme Brulee nearly frozen and severely emaciated beside a dumpster. She and her brother wrapped him in a blanket and rushed him to Stray Rescue, where his temperature was too low to register. He was severely dehydrated, suffering from frostbite and infection, and needed immediate supportive care.

Creme Brulee survived that first critical night and slowly regained his strength and appetite. He eventually stood on his own, began taking
short walks, and was medically cleared for foster care, where he continued gaining weight and confidence.

His foster mom watched him transform from a tired, uncertain dog into a healthy, gentle, confident boy. After losing her own dog, she hadn't been sure she was ready to open her heart again-but Creme Brulee changed that. When he greeted her after work one day by climbing onto the couch to reach her and then refusing to let go, she knew he was home. Creme Brulee had gone from nearly losing his life to finding the forever family he had always deserved.

Leather & Lace got their freedom ride with Donna on a very hot June day. The duo had been running around, but the temperatures were way too high for dogs to be out roaming. Donna was able to get them both into the jeep and brought them back to the shelter. They immediately were so friendly, cuddly, and happy. Lace was a little more reserved, but she was still so sweet. Leather was just happy to be there! Lace quickly found her forever home, and Leather is patiently waiting at the shelter for his.

The stray cat problem is overwhelming. There is never a time when I am out feeding that I don't see multiple stray cats. This beauty was originally sitting in the doorway of an abandoned house and then moved to the window. I thought it was a great image with the contrast of the kitty, the bricks, the bare vines and the darkness inside the house. He/she sat there watching me but then darted inside when I moved in closer to leave some food. Hopefully this kitty came back out to enjoy their meal.

It was a really cold day as I was driving around, and I noticed this black kitty taking refuge inside the abandoned house. Even though the window was broken, the house provided some protection from the cold. I liked the image of the black kitty inside with the torn screen and the reflection of the brick across the street in the broken glass.

There are so many stray cats which is why TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) is so important. Stray Rescue collaborates with cat rescue groups to help with spay/neuter, and we also have helped TNR with feral colony groups. Sometimes it hardly feels like we are making a dent, but certainly every cat that is altered makes a huge difference.

I met a really nice man one day while out feeding. I happened to spot some kittens in a front yard, and the gentleman came outside to see what I was doing. I asked about the cats and kittens, and he said he has been feeding them. He had about 12 bowls for food lined up and down the gangway by his house. I'm not sure he knew the exact number of cats in the colony, but it was obviously getting to be overwhelming. I could see that some of the kittens needed medical care, and they all seemed young enough to rehabilitate and adopt out. So, I offered to take the kittens.

The adults were feral, so I offered to come back and set traps. I let him know we would spay/neuter, vaccinate, and administer prevention before returning them, and there would be no cost. He was grateful for the help and looked forward to them coming back.

It's nice to help with the TNR's (Trap, Neuter, Return) when I know they have a caregiver keeping an eye on them and making sure they are fed, have fresh water and have protective shelter.

It was the heat of the summer when I spotted three strays trying to cool off in the shade underneath a school bus. I noticed one of the three was injured, so she had to be my priority for rescue, but I told the other two I would be back for them.

I was glad to see they both listened and stayed put so I could find them again and get them off the street. I saw the white female sitting by this sign "Pick Up Meals Here." It's like she knew if she sat there, she would get fed. I bet she never guessed that sitting there would actually lead to her freedom ride. It felt amazing to be able to rescue all three of them who are now living in loving homes.

When I first saw this kitty, he was sitting on top of a dumpster in an alley. I don't know if he was dumpster diving for food, or if the top of the dumpster was warm from the sun. He didn't stay long though. As I approached, he darted off into the snow, and I couldn't see him. Pretty soon his head popped up above the snow. He had a small trench dug out in the snow, leading into a pipe in the ground. These animals are so smart; he knew that pipe was a place to keep warm and safe. He would disappear and come back, disappear and come back. I guess he wanted to keep an eye on me while I was there watching him.

This smart girl took some time and patience to finally rescue. I first saw her one day when I was out on another rescue call. As I passed by a street not far from the shelter, I spotted her laying in the street. I quickly turned around to check on her and found her at the place that would be "our usual meeting spot" for the next few months.

Lumi (as she would be named after rescue), stayed at this red brick abandoned house. At first, she would always bark at me when I pulled up. I thought she might have puppies she was protecting because her bark was that intense. But, as it turns out, she was just protecting her place. She stayed in the front part of the house, and every time I arrived, I would hear her start barking and run out of the house. I would put food and water down along the side of the house so no one would bother her. This was our routine for quite awhile. I tried setting a trap, but Lumi didn't want to have anything to do with it. So I just kept coming, leaving food and gaining her trust. Finally, she would come out wagging her tail a bit, and patiently sit on the sidewalk waiting for me to put her food down. All this time, I kept trying to think of a way to get her off the street.

The hot days turned into cold days and the thought of her still being out there was killing me. It was snowing and sleeting one day when I drove by. My intention was to just leave food again. But then I thought of another plan. I parked farther down the street where she wouldn't hear me pull up, and I quietly approached down the side of the building and into the back door. It worked! I had her cornered in that front room before she was able to hear me and run out.

The poor girl was trembling so hard. Between being terrified and cold, her body would not stop shaking. There was NO WAY I was leaving without her this time. After having a conversation with her about how all this was going to go, I finally got a leash on her, got her out of the house and into the warm shelter. This girl could finally get some good sleep. She became THE best girl. She is still looking for her forever home, but I can guarantee whoever adopts her will be getting the perfect companion.

This handsome boy was heard howling and crying from inside this abandoned house at night. A neighbor finally figured out where this distressing sound was coming from and called us when he realized the dog was trapped inside.

When we arrived, we discovered the open basement window which had to be how this big boy got in. But since the window was so high up from the basement floor, he had no way to jump back out.

We climbed in through the window and made our way upstairs which is where the dog had been staying. He was trying to let people know he was there by peeking his head out the open window on the second story.

He was shy at first, but as it often happens, they warm up to the Vienna sausages. I got him leashed and back down to the basement where we just had to get him up and out the window. He was a big boy and still a bit apprehensive to let us pick him up, so we built a ramp with a mattress and old door we found in the basement. I handed the leash to the police officer waiting outside and got the dog started up the ramp with a trail of more sausages. Once he started up, the officer pulled a little on the leash, and the dog was safe outside.

We named him Oscar Mayer, and this big sweet boy is now adopted and happy to have a family of his own!

I spotted this girl standing out in a field. Even from a distance I could see the stain on her white fur around her neck from an embedded collar. She was skittish, so I had to follow her for a bit before I could get her to stop for food. She was definitely hungry and needed help for the wound on her neck, so I set a trap. She had already eaten a little, so I was hoping she was still hungry enough to go in my trap. She watched me from the brush across the street as I set the trap. As soon as I pulled down the street to watch her, she went over to check things out. Thankfully she was still hungry for more Vienna sausages, and she went right into the trap!

Pluribus received the medical attention she needed and is now happy in her forever home.

Animals on the street will find whatever they can to have a comfortable place to lay. I know this dog; he isn't technically a street dog. His "owner" lives in the house right next to where I found him laying in this discarded hot tub. He isn't homeless, but he does live on the street. The owners have refused help with the dogs, and sadly they have multiple dogs that will end up producing more puppies who will be forced to live out on the street. We have been able to rescue some in the past as the puppies have wandered looking for food. But the remaining dogs fend for themselves, exposed to all the dangers of the streets for a stray dog.

We got a call about a dog laying on a mattress in an abandoned building. When I arrived, I spotted him in a trash-filled room sitting on a filthy mattress. He sat there looking at me, and when I started talking to him, I got a little tail wag. When he stood up, I realized that he had a nasty prolapsed rectum. This boy urgently needed our help. Part of the prolapse looked black, like the tissue was dying.

He was easy to leash, but got to enjoy some Vienna Sausages anyway. This boy was ready to go get some help, and he climbed right into the jeep.

We name him Rueben Carter, and he has been the sweetest boy during his time at the shelter. No one can believe he is still waiting for his forever family.

The snow was deep and the temperatures were freezing, but this stray boy was on the move. He was not interested in coming up to me, so I followed him for a bit to see if he would settle somewhere and let me try to set a trap for him. I noticed his front legs bent at a weird angle, but that didn't seem to slow him down much. He kept moving and never allowed me to get close. In the meantime, a call came in to Stray Rescue about an injured dog, so I had to leave to rescue that dog. I continually go back to this area looking for the boy with the bent legs, but I have never seen him again since that day.

Donna received a call about a large male stray roaming around St. Louis City. She went to pick him up, and she encountered the 70-pound Mister Moo Cow. This guy was such a gentle giant! He hadn't been taken care of very well - he had fleas, he tested positive for heartworm disease, he was dirty and covered in scars and potentially had some arthritis going on. However, he was so friendly and grateful to the staff who adored him right away. He spent a couple of weeks at the shelter and became a staff and volunteer favorite. Everyone loved his big head and his mellow, goofy demeanor. After about a month, Mister Moo Cow was adopted, and his dad is his PERFECT match. We are so happy that this guy can live out his golden years without a care in the world!

Officer Ottengheime and Officer Stevens received a call on the morning of Christmas Eve that a dog had been shot multiple times. They rushed to his aid and drove him directly to Stray Rescue for emergency veterinary care. Dr. Oliver met them at the clinic, sedated him, and gave him an initial assessment. Miraculously, no bones had been broken despite the gunshot wounds near his mouth and in his rear hip. He did have a broken tooth that needed to be removed, but the clinic would wait until he had some healing under his belt. Wallace loved his rescuers so much. When Officer Ottengheime and Officer Stevens would come to visit him, he would crawl into their laps and give them a million grateful kisses. He loved his clinic team, his caregivers, and all of his staff and volunteer friends. This boy was so thankful to be alive and finally in a safe place.

Wallace is still looking for his forever family. Despite a few trials, he hasn't found his place yet. That's not from a lack of love - everyone LOVES Wallace, but sometimes, dogs that endure so much trauma take extra time, patience, and fortitude to adjust properly to living in a home. We won't give up on this warrior boy. We know that his family is out there.

So skinny it hurts.

Jane & Goodall came to us from a local animal control. We knew they needed us, so they were transported here and joined our family. Sadly, we see emaciated dogs all the time. So many neglected, abused, scarred pups come to us, but these two are considered severe cases.

When a dog comes in and they undergo an abuse exam, they are given a body score by the veterinarian. In this case, the white dog - Jane, is given a 1. That is the lowest score that can be given. Dr. Oliver said she's one of the most (if not THE most) emaciated dog she has ever seen. Her partner, Goodall, received a low score of 2.

And despite it all, with horrors behind them that would keep us up at night, they smile and wag their tails. They are barely strong enough to stand on their own and yet they are showing us extreme gratitude andââ'¬Â¦.joy.

We think Dr. Jane Goodall would be proud to have these two gorgeous girls as her namesake, because they have HOPE. They did not let their fear, broken hearts, or misery take over. They stay strong and stand tall, ready to give us all their love.

Today, both Jane & Goodall are living their very best lives in their forever homes, and they will never go hungry again.

Gregory was rescued on a dangerously cold day in December. A kind woman found him and had been feeding him. Neighbors said they had seen him around for over a month! We had to help this skinny, lost, cold boy. We got him back to the shelter, warmed him up, and gave him plenty of nutritious food to eat! Gregory is still living at the shelter, patiently waiting for his forever family to find him.

A man was sleeping in his bed when he thought he heard crying outside. When the sun came up, he went out to see if he could find the source of the crying. He found this severely matted dog in a crate in the alley. He was shocked and unsure what to do, so he called us and we came and got this baby. We named him Mopley Crue. We gave him a nice shave, and he had the BEST glow up! Now, Mopley Crue lives in Colorful Colorado living the life of adventure that he deserves!
