First planted in 1978, Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of Virginia's pioneering wineries. At the time, there were only six farm wineries in the Commonwealth. More than 45 years later, the vineyard continues to produce exceptional wines, with 24 acres planted in 11 varieties of Vitis vinifera grapes, including Albarino, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Tannat.

Situated on the eastern slope of Afton Mountain, the vineyard greets the morning sun, maximizing each vine's daily solar exposure and ripening potential. Beneath the surface, in the heart of Virginia's Piedmont, the vines are rooted in distinctive dyke-loam soils, a unique blend of clay and silt formed over millennia through the erosion of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
