Our animal ambassadors play an important role in our mission, helping people connect with the incredible work happening in our wildlife hospital. Each ambassador has a story to tell, and we're excited to welcome a new one to the team ... a Virginia Opossum!

Virginia Opossum #26-0742 was transferred to the Wildlife Center in April 2026 from another wildlife rehabilitator. While her full history is unknown, our veterinary team discovered two fractures in her tail. The damage was irreversible, and the veterinary team had to surgically amputate most of her tail, meaning she could no longer safely be released back to the wild.

In the weeks following her recovery, our outreach staff began evaluating her as a potential animal ambassador. She quickly showed she would be a great fit and officially joined the ambassador team in May. Now, she's ready to start teaching the world!
But first, she needs a name!

We're inviting you to help choose her name! The name you choose will help create a meaningful connection between this opossum and the thousands of people who will meet and learn from her. For many, it will be a name they'll remember for years to come!

Created by Lucy, the Wildlife Center's Virginia Opossum ambassador, this one-of-a-kind framed original is equal parts artwork and conversation piece.

Working alongside Outreach Coordinator Alison, Lucy selected her own color palette from several animal-safe, water-based paints before setting to work, choosing shades of purple, yellow, and teal. Motivated by a trail of mouse treats, she made her way across the canvas, creating a playful, colorful original. According to Alison, Lucy's artistic philosophy seemed to be, "Don't think, just do."

Since joining the Wildlife Center's team in the summer of 2025, Lucy has quickly become a favorite with supporters and audiences at educational programs across Virginia. Now, her creativity can become part of your own collection.

This little bear honors "Yellow Tag," one of the Wildlife Center's American Black Bear cubs from 2013. That year marked the beginning of the Center's modern long-term rehabilitation program for orphaned Black Bear cubs, when 17 young bears arrived for care as the future Bear Complex was being developed.

Yellow Tag became familiar to thousands of supporters through the Wildlife Center's Critter Cam, helping share the story of raising orphaned cubs until they are ready to return to the wild. Today, the Center continues that work each year, caring for Black Bear cubs in the dedicated facilities that grew from those early efforts.

This vintage Northern Telecom QSQM 500AX (often referred to as the NT500AX) is a classic off-white rotary desk telephone manufactured in Canada during the 1970s and 1980s. Still in working condition, it features a fully functional rotary dial and adjustable ringer volume on the base.

Each year, the Wildlife Center cares for dozens of aquatic turtles injured by human activities, including vehicle collisions and entanglement in fishing gear. These patients represent an average of ten different species from across Virginia. Many of these turtles require advanced veterinary treatment and lengthy recoveries, remaining in our hospital for many months before they can safely be released.

During the past decade, annual aquatic turtle admissions to the Wildlife Center have tripled, driven by a rise in injured animals as well as confiscations from the illegal wildlife trade - a trend that underscores the growing conservation challenges these species face. As admissions continue to climb, they place increasing demands on hospital space and resources.

As the need for long-term aquatic turtle housing continues to grow, this year's Paddle Raise will help fund a new heated aquatic turtle greenhouse, creating dedicated space specifically designed for these patients. The project will strengthen the capacity of the entire hospital-freeing valuable treatment and housing space for other wildlife, improving the efficiency of daily operations, and ensuring the Wildlife Center is prepared to meet the needs of future patients.

Paddle Raise gifts will help fund the greenhouse, essential electrical and site infrastructure, specialized aquatic turtle enclosures and care equipment, and the medical care and husbandry supplies needed to help patients recover.
