Items in this basket are all from Cape Town, South Africa and acquired during a service trip in May 2026 by WAVE and Newport Aquarium Staff members. Staff members volunteered for two weeks at the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) to assist with an unprecedented number of African Penguin chicks that had come into the center. SANCCOB is the leading nonprofit dedicated to saving the critically endangered African Penguin.

The Newport Aquarium's Giant Pacific Octopus spends most of its time sleeping at the back of the display tank. Dr. Carpenter was able to capture this image when she spread her beautiful arms across the front glass to reveal her hundreds of suckers. In this image you can see that the pupil of her eye is open to let in more light and her siphon is open wide as she expels water from her mantle, which is how whe breathes and jet propels herself.
This photograph of the South American Sea Nettle was taken at Newport Aquarium in the Go With the Flow Jellyfish Exhibit with a 60 mm macro lens to get close enough to reveal the details of the bell. You can see the many pink tentacles used for food capture and the pink hue inside the bell from eating hundreds of brine shrimp.

Esra Kanisicak is an interdisciplinary sculptor, wife and mother. Throughout 16 relocations in her life, first as the child of a Turkish diplomat and later her expat adult life she relied on art to anchor her soul and feed her need for creativity. Prior to moving to the United States with her husband in 2003, she pursued her passion for scuba diving and worked as a scuba instructor. She has been calling Cincinnati her home since 2011. As a stay home mother, she started her art career as a self-taught painter and now pursuing her life-long dream to study fine arts at the University of Cincinnati's DAAP (College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning) where she has developed a deep affection for 3D art and has found her artistic expression in mixed media sculpture. She explores themes of neurodiversity, belonging and ocean conservation, all areas near and dear to her heart.

Chris Weir is a talented artist and local comedian. He is a former winner of the Funniest Person in Cincinnati Contest & can be heard regularly on Sirius XM. Chris has been a featured performer on comedy festivals such as Limestone, Flyover Fest, Yuck Fest, Cincy Brew Ha-Ha and recently released his first half-hour special on YouTube with Four By Three Comedy. Chris has worked with comics such as Tom Segura, Nikki Glaser, Tom Green & Chad Daniels to name a few. In addition to standup, Chris is also a writer/performer for the award winning, sketch comedy show Future Science & is a co-host on a Reds baseball themed podcast called The New Nasty Boys.
