For thirty five years, Carlos Calvo has been one of Los Angeles's most sought-after private guitar instructors - a teacher whose students don't just learn to play, they go on to do something with it. His alumni include Adam Levine of Maroon 5, members of Phantom Planet, Nicole Rosenbach of The Happy Fits, and the children of rock royalty like Neil Diamond and Joe Perry. Many of his students have stayed with him for ten years or more, a testament not just to his skill, but to the kind of mentor he is: patient, deeply knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in each person's musical journey. Teaching, Carlos has said, is the most fulfilling work he does - and it shows.
His reputation as a teacher extends well beyond private lessons. Hollywood has trusted him repeatedly as a guitar coach for major productions, working with actors including David Duchovny, Adam Brody, Suki Waterhouse, and David Oyelowo, who prepared the role of blues legend Muddy Waters under Carlos's guidance. For six seasons on Showtime's Californication, he was the go-to resource for authentic guitar performance on set.
A word about the musician behind the teacher: Carlos has toured nationally and internationally as an opening act for Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, the Bacon Brothers, and Colin Hay, and has served for eight years as Musical Director for the ALS Network Champions for the Cure Gala - a role that reflects the trust and admiration he inspires among fellow professionals. He has recorded with the LA Philharmonic, composed for television, and co-produced albums at Capitol Studios. All of that lives in the room when he teaches.
