I try to remain open to the so-called "mistakes" along the way-sometimes they turn into the most interesting parts of the piece. I love building subtle tension through push and pull, and exploring the soft, blurred edges where colors overlap, and earlier marks linger just beneath the surface. Brushwork and mark-making are important to me, too-I experiment with a variety of tools to create mood, movement, and a sense of energy. Some paintings endure trials and setbacks, passing through cycles of building up, tearing down, carving back into the paint, and rebuilding again before finally reaching a feeling of resolve. Intellectually, I strive for raw honesty. If my work begins looking too precious, I change those aspects of the work.
