daylight waning in its belly,

it peers at the flowers through tree branches,

sends down warmth to tuck in each bloom.

Not yet ready for this evening routine,

blossoms stay open and urge the sun to stay,

but the labor of beauty takes its toll

and petals begin to close like drowsy child eyes.

The sun eases down,

daytime following in its wake,

it turns out the light at the horizon's edge,

bids the flower garden Good Night.

Dave Loewenstein is a muralist, printmaker, and writer based in Lawrence, Kansas. His community-based murals can be found across the United States and in Northern Ireland, South Korea, and Brazil. Loewenstein's prints, which focus on social justice issues, are exhibited internationally and are in many permanent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles. He is the co-author of Kansas Murals: A Traveler's Guide, a 2007 Kansas Notable Book Award Winner, and is the subject of the 2016 documentary, "Called to Walls." Since 2019, he has been working with members of the Kanza Tribe on the Sacred Red Rock Project, which successfully led to the rematriation of Iⁿ'zhúje'waxÃ3be (a 28-ton glacial erratic stone formerly located in Robinson Park in Lawrence) to the Kanza on their land at Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park outside of Council Grove.

I used to be afraid it would bring others down, too. I understand my depression, and when it hits, I can also sense it and anxiety in others. This has taught me much about being empathetic."

"I should have painted this first before adding the crosses and flowers. But, I still liked it and am glad I can still find beauty in it; unlike several other times, I would obsess over getting it right and starting all over.

There is wonder and beauty in being able to be okay with being completely imperfect. It gives way to authenticity, genuineness, and finally being okay with who you are.

I am a long way from being okay with me, but it makes me feel like when I can let something go, I am... okay.

Plus, are we all ever really okay with ourselves 24/7? It is okay! Stop obsessing and just start living. Life can be futile. Be incredibly, bravely, and you solemnly swear to be you - you!"
