When My Daughter Does My Hair
Laura Burton
Digital Illustration$65
"Some of my favorite moments with my daughter are the two of us sitting on my bed, fixing hair. This digital illustration was based on a photo she took of her work when she was 7. Every clip, bow, and strand placement was carefully chosen and placed with tiny fingers until she let out a big sigh and exclaimed, 'beautiful!' and she was absolutely right.
Generations of women have taken care of each other in this way. The wallpaper pattern is a reproduction of the stone carving on the Gage Park arch in Topeka, commissioned by park donor Louisa Gage, adorned with prairie roses and symbols of victory. Louisa had one daughter who died in infancy. She spent her life caring for her community, advocating for Gage Park and local hospitals."
