ARTIST NOTES: On a hike I took fifty years ago, I gave up trying to fight my way through the willow swamp at Bierstadt's base in Guanella Pass. Today the swamp has been bridged and boardwalked, and now Bierstadt is a favorite first-time 14er. The current challenge: Slowing the erosion caused by all those boot prints. Views from the top are awe-inspiring. The people- and mountain-goat watching are great too.

ARTIST NOTES: The most challenging route up Torreys follows the ridge angling upward from left. More safety-minded hikers follow the switchbacks up the cirque to the left of the ridge. My friend Peter left his glasses on a rock about halfway up; let me know if you find them.
