GOAL

From an early age, signs emerged that Elijah was likely autistic. His progress came slowly and was rarely linear, marked by meaningful steps forward and, at times, moments of regression.

With time, therapy, consistent routines, and unwavering support, Elijah's strengths began to shine. His memory recall is remarkable; he often remembers the smallest details the rest of us would easily forget. (Fair warning: never challenge him to a memory game.)

Elijah has learned coping strategies to navigate overstimulation, while those around him have learned patience, understanding, and acceptance. To know Elijah is to be embraced by his charisma. I used to warn teachers and therapists, "Be careful, you're going to fall in love with him." He has that effect on people. Eventually, I stopped giving the warning, because loving Elijah comes naturally.

Today, autism is not something Elijah is expected to overcome. It is simply a part of who he is. His journey continues, not defined by limitations, but by growth, individuality, and the ongoing discovery of his place in the world.

Elijah has taught me more than I could ever teach him. Like all of us, he wants one simple thing: to be accepted for who he is, just as he is.
