Liesl Schubel & Dani Brensinger
Pliable Matter
Glassblowing
June 22 - 26

Students engage the glassblowing studio as a site of shared rhythm and response to the physically and conceptually pliable material of hot glass. Through collaborative exercises, participants learn to read each other's movements alongside the movement of the glass, communicate through action, and embrace the unpredictable nature of the material. Humor and experimentation serve as tools for discovery, reinforcing that play can be a powerful catalyst for technical and creative growth. Exploring the range of possibilities from molten to solid, we'll engage in technical explorations with flameworked elements, inclusions, and taking inspiration from other flexible materials.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.

Instructors

Liesl Schubel was born in Ontario, Canada in 1990. They received their BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. The folly of faithful recreation from memories motivates their work as a practice of collection and revision. They reveal entanglements of identity, home, environment, and relationships, and play with the confusions of their representations. Liesl has worked with glass for over 15 years, and incorporates a variety of other mediums into their work.

Liesl is an artist, teacher, fabricator, and arts administrator. Recent residencies include time at WheatonArts & Cultural Center, UrbanGlass, and Pilchuck Glass School. They have recently exhibited work at Design Dysphoria in NYC, Small World in Princeton, NJ, Frederick's & Mae in Manhattan, NY, Traver Gallery in Seattle, WA, BWA in Wroclaw, Poland, Putty's Coronation in Brooklyn, NY, and Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, WA. Recent teaching includes workshops at UrbanGlass, the Toledo Museum of Art, Glassroots, and Ox-Bow School of Art. They are currently pursuing an MFA at The Ohio State University.

Danielle Brensinger is a contemporary glass artist, instructor, and fabricator whose work investigates craft, form, and narrative through glass and mixed media. She earned her BFA in Glass from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2012 and completed her MFA at California State University, San Bernardino in 2023.

Her work traces the rhythms and gestures of making, drawing on patterns of labor and care that echo across generations. Through glass, she explores repetition, variation, and the subtle language of process, revealing the connections between material, maker, and memory. Based in Los Angeles, she co-runs Second Best Studio, producing work for artists and designers while advancing her own practice. She has taught at the Pilchuck Glass School (WA), Penland School of Crafts (NC), California State University San Bernardino (CA), Salem Community College (NJ), and UrbanGlass (NY). She has also recently completed residencies at WheatonArts (NJ) and as both a Neon Resident and Emerging Artist at Pilchuck Glass School (WA).
