This one-of-a-kind item is an illustration depicting three children walking to school with books and a Latvian flag under a Saulite, featuring a distinct wood frame hand made by Gunars Spielbergs.

Similar illustrations are found in vintage Latvian children's books from the 1980s.

"Quiet Radiance" by Viestarts Aistars

Chicago was Aistars' first home in the United States, and he enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied art while learning to speak English. His education was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, but he returned to the Art Institute after the war and finished his degree, married, had two daughters. Aistars moved to Kalamazoo in 1959 to become a part of a large and vibrant Latvian community.

Aistars has had his artwork exhibited across the United States, in Europe and in Australia. He has had more than 60 one-man art exhibits. Aistars has won numerous prizes and his work has been purchased by many private collectors, also by the State Museum in Riga, Latvia, and the Art Museum in Jelgava, Latvia. A painting of a Latvian woman in folk costume is in a permanent collection at the Riga Pils (Riga Castle), the president's residence in Riga, Latvia.

Artist: Arvids Udris (Latvian, 1910-1983)

Arvids Udris was a notable Latvian painter known for his tonal impressionist landscapes that captured the essence of the Latvian countryside. The painting's subject matter-golden haystacks, the rustic farm building with a weathered roof, and the dense treeline-is a classic theme in his oeuvre.

Paintings by Arvids Udris are well-regarded in the Baltic art market.

The value is bolstered by the painting's heavy impasto technique (thickly applied paint) and the vibrant, golden "harvest" palette, which are highly desirable traits for collectors of his work.

Talis Kikauka was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1929. He immigrated to Canada in 1948 with his parents and siblings and settled in Hamilton, Ontario. Talis earned a B.A. from McMaster University. Upon graduating he established himself as a painter & writer. He was a prolific painter, producing many works in various themes and media. In his later years, he painted almost exclusively in watercolour.

"After years of studying the Impressionists with their loose colour patches, the spatial colour topology of Cézanne, the plein air excursions of the Group of Seven, I have tried to distill my own view of the landscape. Peninsulas, islands, coves, bays with stretches of open water, all have a feeling of horizontality, a mood of repose, when seen from a distance. Over millions of years, rock forms have evolved as a result of wind, wave and rain erosion. These fluid forms are immersed in water: their unending flow has engraved lines in my perception. The branches of the trees sway
Into the mystical night.
With its leaves waiting to be eased
Into the breeze,
To fly amongst the forests beasts
And land on gentle hands.

Sway is a relief print from a linoleum cut. A technique where the artist carves a design into a sheet of lineleum using sharp gouges. The raised, un-carved areas are inked, while the carved-away areas remain white. Ink it transferred to paper or fabric by hand or with a press, producing bold, graphic prints.

Artist: Anna Annus Hagen, a Latvian-born American artist known for her vibrant and highly textured mixed-media works.

Hagen's style is characterized by several elements visible in this piece:

• Tactile Surfaces: She often creates "hybrid paintings" that push the boundaries between 2D and 3D. She uses heavy impasto, wax, and layered materials to create a crust-like, archaeological feel.
• The "Human-Tree" Amalgam: Much of her work explores the connection between nature and humanity. She frequently blends human anatomical features with tree-like forms, symbolizing a deep, spiritual rootedness in the natural world.
