Tushdenghazhq'uch'

Tushdenghazhq'uch' is made of beadwork with size 11 & 13 seed beads, bugle & glass accent beads, ribbon, tanned moose hide, tiger's eye, lapis lazuli, kyanite, and pearls. Tushdenghazhq'uch' means "I have been shaped by the water" in Dena'ina. This phrase comes from an old sukdu (story) from the perspective of a rock and how it was formed and existed in this world. In Dena'ina beliefs, stories hold medicine, and remembrance of stories supports our health and well-being. The Tushdenghazhq'uch' dreamcatcher represents a mountainscape across the channel in Arnoya where I spent a shared artist residency. It was a magical scene to observe daily, as it was constantly changing with the sky. The waterfall from the glacial runoff could be heard from a great distance and the height of the mountains dwarfed us below. As magnificent as the mountains were, I could not help but think about how the water has shaped the abstract lines of the glaciers, creeks, waterfall, and lakes. denainadreams.com

The artist, Kacie Sampson, Inupiaq, is originally from Noorvik, Alaska but currently resides in Anchorage, Alaska. She is a self-taught artist who loves to live the subsistence lifestyle and create Alaska Native themed art. Face Tattoo-Inspired Jewelry

She was born and raised in Utqiagvik, Alaska. She is the designer and owner of Arctic Luxe. Arctic Luxe is a brand that promotes and sells handmade Indigenous clothing and accessories as well as manufactured designed clothing. Bobby grew up in a subsistence lifestyle. All her life she was surrounded by hunting and gathering which inspires her work. She started sewing at the age of 13. Her aunt, mother, and grandmother taught her how to sew. Kaalootwurioo Adrienne Fleek was born in Juneau, Alaska and spent her formative years in the quiet communities of Yakutat and King Salmon, AK. Her parents taught her to appreciate and utilize what the landscape had to share with her and her siblings. Her mom strapped Adrienne to her back when Adrienne was a baby and carried her along on her trap lines. Her father took her and her siblings fishing for silver salmon (coho-L'ook in Tlingit) every August. Her family continues to rely upon and appreciate the abundance of wildlife around them. She spent her career working to conserve the special places in Alaska to make sure these opportunities and lifestyle are available for the next 7 generations. Ivory Qigiquq Earrings

Anaraanguaq Kellen Katcheak is Yup'ik from Tapraq (Stebbins, Alaska). Kellen's wife encouraged him to design jewelry inspired by the recognition of being Yup'ik and teaching of the Yukon Delta ways of hunting seal. They use a nanerpuk (seal spear aka atlatl) to seal hunting with the help of a nugaq (spear thrower). Before metals were introduced, spearheads were made of ivory, bone, slate, and/or jade.
