Artist Bio:
Tom Budzak is a Tempe, AZ-based ceramic artist who primarily creates porcelain functional wares. His work is influenced by ancient pottery forms, the contemporary craft movement, and pointillist surface decoration. Great satisfaction is taken in designing beautiful pieces that people can incorporate in their daily life. A simple cup of coffee or bowl of soup takes on a higher quality when it is enjoyed from a hand-crafted porcelain piece. All dots are individually applied one by one, and all work is food, microwave, and dishwasher safe. Tom earned his BFA from Arizona State University and his MFA from New Mexico State University, both with an emphasis in ceramics. He is currently an adjunct professor at South Mountain Community College and a Master Instructor Teacher at the Mesa Art Center, along with keeping up his studio practice.

A library wide installation commissioned by Tempe Public Arts for Tempe Public Library to Celebrate Summer Reading theme of "All Together Now: Kindness, Unity and Friendship." I kept thinking of the idiom "birds of a feather flock together." I liked the idea that we all worked together to enjoy and create a library space that works for everyone, I did not like the idea that we only stick with our own common group, with more research I found that many birds are very friendly (with other birds) and congregate in nocks, though the flocks are not always just a single type of bird and mixed flocks are common.
