$10,000 covers the cost to type, test and match almost 130 units of blood
for people living with sickle cell disease
Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. For people living with
sickle cell disease, like Tymia, regular transfusions are essential to managing
painful and life-threatening symptoms, including organ damage and strokes.
Transfusions must be matched very closely to lower the patient's risk of
developing complications. The American Red Cross is dedicated to identifying
the best possible matches for blood transfusion for people living with sickle
cell disease.

$5,000 covers the cost to operate one blood drive and test the life-saving
blood collected from the donors
This covers the expense of the staff to collect the blood, the vehicles and
equipment used, as well as the testing that is needed for one blood drive.
Blood used for lifesaving transfusions needs to be typed and matched for the
patient. For patients, like Tymia, testing the blood is vital to make sure it can
provide the relief needed to save her life.

$2,500 deploys a volunteer, like Terry Barcelona, to an operation
This includes travel, transportation, lodging, food, and vital support systems
like our online Volunteer Connection portal. The average length of a disaster
deployment is 12 days. Since July, Terry has already been deployed to 5
operations for a total of 67 days.

$1,000 covers the cost of one local disaster response
This service includes deploying a response vehicle and 2 volunteers to
provide financial assistance to 1 affected family. Red Cross Disaster Action
staff and volunteers, like Peggy and Terry Barcelona, respond every day
in their communities to support families impacted by local disasters like
home fires.

$500 stocks 5 patient comfort kits with items to be handed out to
wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans.
This includes items such as word search books, playing cards, puzzles,
reading material, toiletries, ear plugs and reading glasses. When family
members cannot get there, a comfort kit can provide a lift that is needed to
keep our soldiers and veterans cheerful in their hardest days.

$250 provides 5 smoke alarm installs
Covers the fire safety training and installation of five smoke alarm to make
homes safer. This year, Spartanburg has been chosen as the Signature
Community in South Carolina for the national Red Cross Sound the Alarm
(STA) initiative. Between April 17-24, Red Cross staff and volunteers, along
with local Spartanburg County Emergency Management, Fire Departments,
and State Fire, plan to install 1,100 smoke alarms in Spartanburg County
communities identified as most at-risk for a home fire.

$100 provides 5 smoke alarm installs
