Ngugi wa Thiong'o's The Trial of Dedan Kimathi is a play based on the trial of one of the celebrated leaders of the Mau Mau revolution.
In the House of the Interpreter recounts Ngugi's own experience during that time period as a student at Alliance High School, contrasting the thrill of his pursuit of education with the turmoil of the era.
With Unbury Our Dead with Song, Ngugi's son Mukoma steps back from the political struggles that have so shaped the family to present a love letter to African music. The novel follows a reporter learning about the Tizita (popularly called the Ethiopian blues) through the stories of four musicians who are in a competition to sing the best of this mode of music. This book is signed by the author.
Three books focused on impacts of colonialism:
Decolonizing the Mind by Ngugi wa Thiong'o - one of Ngugi's best known books: a collection of essays on the role of language in culture, history and identity.
Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste (signed by the author) - an historic novel set in Ethiopia during Mussolini's 1935 invasion, focused on women at the front lines and inspired by the story of Mengiste's great grandmother.
Imperial Reckonlng by Caroline Elkins - the history of Britain's gulag in Kenya, documenting a determined effort by the British to destroy official records of their attempts to stop the Mau Mau uprising with their detention of nearly the entire population of the ethnic Kikuyu group, and how the Kikuyu succeeded in their bid for Kenyan independence.
Wooden hard-carved and painted animal figures, puzzle map of Africa and an adorable child-sized elephant cap.
