Triptych Ink Prints

This triptych-three prints created with oil-based ink-reflects my work as a printmaker and my interest in composition.

I am a self-taught artist and began my printmaking practice over thirty years ago in Springfield, Massachusetts. After moving to Chicago, I joined the North Shore Art League in 1989, where I have continued to grow in my work.

My creative process embraces the element of surprise, and at times, my pieces incorporate a sense of humor and political commentary.

I am currently living with ALS and continue to create while living on the North Shore with my husband, Robert.

Sunflower Quilt

I am living with SOD1 ALS and was diagnosed in December 2021. I began quilting 10 years ago, and it continues to be something that brings me a great deal of joy. With the help of my husband Jeff, who cuts the fabric, I am able to continue quilting every day. Each Tuesday, six of my friends come over and quilt with me, which is a time I look forward to each week. I chose the sunflower pattern because I love the happiness of sunflowers and hope that it touches others as well.

Bryan's Story: I was diagnosed with PLS (a milder form of ALS) in 2018 after almost five years of diagnostic tests to determine my condition. As his condition progressed it became more difficult to accomplish many of my hobbies. As a gift for father's day in 2020 my younger daughter signed us up for an eight week class to introduce me to a safer medium to explore my artistic side. I have continued to participate at the studio having found a friendly and thoughtful community to join. As my abilities decline I still find a great deal of joy in working with clay. I don't know if I will be able to continue when I need to use a wheelchair, but it is a seated activity, so there is hope!

Painting by Ed Ruda

Ed Ruda is proud to be a helpful member of the ALS family, hoping one day that answers will be found to eliminate ALS. While running a management consulting firm for 35 years, Ed's true love is painting. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and has paintings hanging throughout the U.S, Hong Kong, Singapore, France, Germany and England. Ed's Mom lost her battle to this cruel and unrelenting disease at the age of 53.
