The myth of the Sailor's Valentine is that they were made by sailors in the 1800s to help pass time on long whaling and merchant voyages for wives and sweethearts as homecoming gifts. In fact, we now know the art originated in Barbados, often the last stop before home, where sailors purchased them as souvenirs.
Created in an octagonal wooden box design, these intricate designs made of tiny shells often include hearts and flower and sometimes carried a romantic message.
Hearts Entwined created by a Harwich artist, represents the sentiment of two hearts joined for infinity in an everlasting love.
For a one-year period, the artist has offered to customize this work by adding names or dates. Please allow 30 days notice to have it for a specific date. This item may NOT be shipped.
