Julian Maturino first started blowing glass at California State University-Fullerton in 2005, where he was taught in the traditional Venetian fashion by Joe Cariati. Maturino was immediately intrigued by the technical process, making him fall in love with form, function and color. Now, he works at Pittsburgh Glass Center and is collaborating with his partner, Leah Lynn, to develop a product line in glass.

"On Fear" is a kiln casting of the nest of a paper wasp.

I grew up with a strong fear of wasps, and this piece represents my personal inquiries into how I relate to and generate narrative surrounding ideas of threat and safety, beauty, grotesqueness, home, routine, and fear. For me the wasp nest is a strong signifier. They may form spontaneously; represent a neglected space, or a space we cannot access. The wasp nest is an active home, full of life, and full of potential danger. The wasp's tendency to demand territory, sting and attack is not necessarily the fault of the wasp, but it is something we must contend with.

I was able to create a mold of the nest by painting thin layers of gesso on the nest over the course of two months. After strengthening the nest to a point where it could survive the weight of mold making materials, I created a silicone mold, cast it in wax, and then kiln cast the nest. It is a solid cast utilizing Czech Boma glass, and the lost wax process.

Turning this extremely light, organic, fragile and unique object into a solid glass casting, is a juxtaposition I enjoy, and allows me to reconsider and remap my relationship to fear. I enjoy the idea of removing language or and having the signifiers of our fear and unease become transparent, and unrecognizable.

Created during my 2024 BIPOC Artist-in-Residence at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass, Czargon's Tri-Intersecting Torus is a glowing exploration of form, collaboration, and luminous chemistry. This piece was born from an opportunity to work with Neodymium glass, an extraordinary material that shifts from a soft blue in sunlight to a rich violet under fluorescent light.

Inspired to push the boundaries of shape and interaction, I designed a form with three intersecting tunnels to observe how plasma arcs, twists, and propagates through complex geometry. Glasswork is never a solitary act. It's a dialogue with material, with space, and with people. The development of this piece was shaped by the energy of shared experimentation.

The gas mixture, nicknamed "Czargon," a blend of xenon and argon, was tuned in collaboration with Sean Bradley, whose expertise helped bring the internal atmosphere to life. Inside, a layer of pink phosphor coats the glass, but when energized, it surprises the viewer with an intense orange glow, a color that pulses with unexpected warmth and brilliance as it radiates through the torus.

More than an object, Czargon's Tri-Intersecting Torus is a celebration of light, color, and community in the act of making. It's an invitation to witness plasma's dance in a shape that defies linear motion, illuminating the invisible forces that shape both glass and human connection.

Stacked Diamond Drop Earrings in Green Tea Tint

Broken Plates is a line of glass jewelry, cut from the surface of hand blown glass. The process begins in a hot glass studio, where layers of bold, crisp colors are applied to molten glass and blown into a flat surface (or plate) that will serve as the canvas for these glassy wearables. Infused with hand drawn imagery or left as a raw, organic surface, the pieces take shape.

Each wearable is cut by hand or with the use of a CNC waterjet before they are polished and fashioned into their final form. "Broken Plates" makes reference to the work's origin, and the result is a highly unique line of jewelry that transcends current trends and captures the stunning qualities of hand blown glass.

Violet/Compass, Breaking Patterns Series
Hot glass and digitally enhanced nontraditional pate de verre.

Breaking Patterns explores the intersection of cultural tradition, identity, and the pressures of conformity. Culture shape who we are and create patterns of behaviour that are hard to break. In this series, the interaction between hot and kiln-formed glass metaphorically represents the constant push and pull between identity, culture, and self-discovery. It creates moments of transformation, distortion, and fragility.

This process departs from my earlier approach, where careful planning sought to define how my identity was perceived through my work. Instead, this series surrenders to the imperfections of change, revealing the beauty and complexity of boundaries broken by the heat of transformation. This work reflects the unforeseeable process of challenging cultural norms, revealing a volatile yet profound beauty in breaking patterns.

The collision of control and disorder challenges the rigid boundaries of tradition, mirroring the tension between cultural expectations and personal expression. In breaking the moulds of these recognizably "oriental" patterns, we create space for new possibilities and ways of perceiving what could be. When we push against these limits, we discover the grotesque beauty in their destruction, yet we are still haunted by the distortion of culture and customs.

Breaking Patterns examines this fractured legacy, inviting reflection on how we navigate and reshape the complex interplay of cultural inheritance and personal identity.

"In Seeking Nowhere, 2020, I investigate the sense of belonging that immigrants seek when they leave their homeland. It is composed of 35 photographs, capturing 5 different sea horizons, each represented seven times. The pieces are made by kilnforming, laminating, and coldworking glass with photographic decals. Each image has been manipulated using a variety of materials, techniques, and firing processes. By controlling the heat of the kiln I have achieved different textures and distortions. The result has created a group of pieces that look similar while each of them conveys a unique perspective. I believe that it takes enormous courage and strength for an immigrant to leave behind everything they know in order to explore new horizons. Here Comes the Sun

The hand-blown shape of fluctuating translucency of bright yellow glass resembles a living organism. It rests on black industrial casters, a familiar item from a hardware store. The two components of the sculpture that are brought together, suggest a potential of a cartoonish disaster - casters are rolling, and glass form is breaking.

Inna Babaeva's work takes off-the-shelf objects and mass-consumption materials and combines them with hand-blown glass sculptures that she makes herself. The shapes, colors, and fluctuating translucency of the glass alludes to the bodies of living organisms - fragile, vulnerable, and comical all at once. Her approach to glass blowing shows an appreciation for the material's beauty, peculiarity, and spiritedness. Babaeva's work probes the parallel coexistence of mass-produced and unique, machine-made and crafted-by-hand, disposable and precious.

This sculpture is made of hot sculpted glass utilizing the Graal technique, and hand forged steel. The title refers to the native word for the subspecies "Rafflesia Leonardi" or Malaysian corpse flower. These are a fascinating plant species which parasitizes the Tetrastigma vine and produce none of their own photosynthetic tissues. It only emerges from its host to produce massive flowers (the largest in the world), which exude the stench of death and are intended to attract carrion flies as their primary pollinators.

Waterjet cut, polished and fused glass

Broken Plates is a line of glass jewelry, cut from the surface of hand blown glass. The process begins in a hot glass studio, where layers of bold, crisp colors are applied to molten glass and blown into a flat surface (or plate) that will serve as the canvas for these glassy wearables. Infused with hand drawn imagery or left as a raw, organic surface, the pieces take shape. Each wearable is cut by hand or with the use of a CNC waterjet before they are polished and fashioned into their final form.

"Broken Plates" makes reference to the work's origin, and the result is a highly unique line of jewelry that transcends current trends and captures the stunning qualities of hand blown glass.

Image Vessel Series

The blown glass, "Image Vessel Series" embodies painting and sculpture in a blown glass vessel format. Over a period of 9 years, the Image Vessel Series evolved. From 1976 to 1978 the series portrayed subjective imagery/storytelling. From 1978 to 1984 the vessels are nonobjective in subject matter to invoke a meditative abstract expressionist experience. Working at the furnace, the typical process time of an Image Vessel was about 3 to 5 hours. I compared the process to watercolor painting in both color and transparency.

Celestial 9

This work seeks to capture the mystique and wonder of both mushrooms and the cosmos. By juxtaposing the familiar form of a mushroom with celestial elements, I aim to evoke a sense of awe and fascination, inviting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of nature and the universe.

Each sculpture is meticulously crafted, drawing inspiration from different mushroom species and their mesmerizing textures, however, it is in their transformation that they transcend earthly limitations and extend toward the cosmic. Like mushrooms that emerge from the darkness of the forest floor, these sculptures represent growth, transformation, and the cyclical nature of life. They serve as symbols of resilience and adaptation, reminding us of our own capacity for change and renewal.

This sculpture aims to exude a sense of both fragility and resilience, capturing the ephemeral nature of mushrooms and the vastness of the cosmos.

Cast Glass Bowl

Inspired by my background in labor-intensive crafts and my research of art and architectural history, I make artwork to explore how context, material, and gesture can encourage a life in which all things can be viewed as historically, spiritually, and artistically meaningful. I utilize the stories and associations that come with found objects to develop the meaning of my work.

My materials have included glass swept up from streets, dust from the ventilation of a bible factory, blessed liturgical candles, and waste glass gathered from glass shops. The narratives imbued within these reclaimed materials come together to create sculptures which display a relic-like quality. This begins to blur the line between secular and sacred, thus encouraging reverence and curiosity towards every part of the world around us.

Alien pendants

'The Alien' or 'Star People' is a common motif within my work. Aliens are a metaphor for otherness. I use them as a way to tackle the challenges of movement in a non-direct way. While at first glance they may seem like these are happy go lucky creatures, but if you peel back their visual layers there is something more. The wear and tear of their bodies capture a lived turmoil. It is these details that I use to really flesh out a deeper, more serious narrative.

Midsummer Niagara XIV

Midsummer Niagara XIV is a wall piece of fused and slumped glass. My work is often inspired by images of water. Imagine standing on a bridge overlooking a stream. What creatures might float by? How will that particular place reflect the sunlight? What plants grow on the banks of the stream?

At first, my pieces look like a jumble of shards of glass. I use (and reuse) parts of former pieces. I also create "set ups", images I think might be useful, out of threads, frit, and sheets of glass. My studio may look a little chaotic because if the pieces of glass I have available aren't right in front of me, I don't know what is available!

I fuse the shards together on a large kiln shelf, in the shape of a boat. Then, the front surface is sandblasted and the piece is slumped into a mold I build of softbrick covered with fabric that can be fired. The slumping is done at a temperature that slightly melts the sandblasted surface so that it glows. I fabricate glass tubes that are epoxied onto the back and metal hangers with hooks that match the tubes. My pieces are easy to hang.

The Boudoir of Miss Mae Carothers (2024)

This mixed-media assemblage is studded on the outside with pieces of coral, mother of pearl, and abalone accents. Like a lightning rod, a green glass spire on the assemblage roof points to the sky. The inside of the assemblage is papered with correspondence and illuminated with battery powered LED lights. An entire interior scene is visible from the reverse side, including the bosom-clutching Miss Mae Carothers, who gazes longingly out her boudoir window.

This Ice Bear Sculpture has yellow parrot headdress. It is holding baton of 24 icicles. The entire bear sports 81 of my hand-torched Moretti Venetian glass beads. They are strung in color block patterns. The yellow vaseline beads including the elephand head bead glow bright yellow when viewed under ultra violet light. Added beads include: volcanic rock hand picked from Mt. Etna's base in Sicily, hematite & black onyx, white carved bone - India, Oaxaca fish beads, yellow opaque glass beads, and 3 hand carved wood animal fetish. The bellow ornamentation is a bumblee jaspe with peyote stitching of delica beads and repeating patterns acrylic painting. Bear is sculpted of polar, basswood headdress and white ash base.

The Mobius Vessel Series pays homage to the visionary Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, whose minimalist forms and integration of materials have long inspired Kenney. He challenges us to "not try to make materials speak our language; we must go with them to the point where others will understand their language."

Like Bancusi, Kenney strives to create harmony between mediums, merging them into singular, contemplative forms. Each vessel in the series explores the elemental elegance of the ovoid. The dialogue between engraved openings, silvered exteriors, and precision-turned bases is central to the work and invites meditation on balance, texture, and tension. The forms are intentionally reductive, emphasizing purity of shape and the interplay of transparency and opacity, coolness and warmth.

The Mobius concept refers not only to the abstract geometry of continuous surfaces, but also to the continuum of craft traditions. The Mobius Vessel Series lives at the intersection of disciplines and reflects Kenney's ongoing inquiry into form, material, and the human impulse to transform.
