Gary was a three-time All-American while at the University of Florida and a
member of their national championship team in 1973 where he finished
runner-up behind Ben Crenshaw in the NCAA Championships. Gary later
won six PGA events and then worked as a sportscaster covering the PGA
Tour. In 2023, Gary won with prestigious Payne Stewart Award, an annual
award presented to one professional golfer whose career reflects the values
of character, sportsmanship, and commitment to charity.
The 18-hole Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Florida opened in 1997 and
was designed by Steve Smyers.
