When I was first asked to paint Kevin Holland, I thought I understood the task ahead of me. But the more I learned about Kevin's life and service, the more I realized how little I could truly comprehend what our nation's most elite veterans endure-and sacrifice-for the rest of us.

Kevin is the only man in U.S. history to serve in both SEAL Team 6 and Delta Force. His career includes 14 deployments to the Middle East, more than 2,000 combat missions, and four years as an assault team leader-responsible for six operators trusted with some of the most strategic missions in our nation's history. Over the course of his service, Kevin earned 2 Bronze Stars for Valor, 5 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, and numerous other decorations. These are facts, but behind each one is a story of courage, hardship, and loss that no words-or paintings-can fully capture.

From the very beginning of this project, I knew I wanted Kevin's portrait to be more than just an image-it needed to tell his story. Kevin and his wife visited my studio to ensure that the details were accurate. In fact, Kevin even added a few brushstrokes to the original painting himself. That moment was humbling: the man whose life and sacrifices I was attempting to honor with paint, placing his own hand into the work.

As an artist, my role is simple compared to the life Kevin has lived. I can only hope that this painting gives others a glimpse of the man behind the uniform and a deeper appreciation for all who have served. Thank you for your service, Kevin.

When Matt Light first asked me to paint one of the horse soldiers--legendary green beret, Scott Neil--I thought I was going to be painting a soldier on a horse. Little did I know... "I didn't ride the horses," Scott quickly explained. "I was the guy who went deeper behind enemy lines to kill and capture the Taliban, as well as the Al Qaeda generals."

From the very start of the project, I worked closely with Scott to ensure that I was telling "his story" by creating an accurate image. If Scott didn't ride a horse, then what am I going to paint? I wondered. And then I met Scott's friend, Charlie Novotny, who explained the dangerous job of breaching doors. "Scott's primary mission was to conduct deep strategic reconnaissance, hunting and killing senior Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders who had been dislodged in the mountains of Afghanistan by unconventional teams." One of these teams was ODA 595 - better known as the Horse Soldiers--who were Scott's sister team.

In the early days of post-9/11, Scott's mission led to the killing and capturing of more than 85 high profile Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders. Some of these harrowing operations were decided by hand-to-hand combat; any prisoners captured were then sent to Guantanamo in Cuba.

Throughout the entire creative process, I worked closely with Scott to ensure that I was accurately portraying him, as well as his weapons and gear. I tried to create an image that would not only prove to be precise, but would also allow the viewer a true appreciation for what the man had lived through. As an artist, it's my job to instill this understanding and appreciation-not only for Scott, but for all the operators who have put everything on the line for our country.

Over two years ago, I began a 4-foot oil painting of Master Sergeant (Ret.) Kevin Holland. From the start, I knew I didn't just want to create a likeness-I wanted to capture Kevin as he truly was during his years of service. He was kind enough to share photos from his time in the field, and those images became the foundation for this piece.

In the early 1990s, Kevin worked with master blade smith Daniel Winkler of Winkler Knives to design a custom axe-one that he carried on every single one of his 14 deployments, whether with the Navy or the Army. That very same axe appears in this painting, not just as a weapon, but as a symbol of his journey and the life he lived in service to our country.

Kevin's story is remarkable. He is the only person in U.S. history to have served in both SEAL Team 6 and Delta Force. His career is defined by courage, sacrifice, and an uncompromising devotion to his teammates and mission.

Over the past few months, I've had the honor of working on a portrait of Sergeant Major (Ret.) Kyle Lamb. Yes-that Kyle Lamb. With 21 years in the Army, 15 of those in Delta Force, five tours in Iraq, and numerous awards and decorations-including the Silver Star for his heroic role in the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down)-Kyle's career is nothing short of extraordinary. Kyle's story, like the man himself, is defined by courage, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his teammates and country.

When he stopped by the studio, it was more than just a visit. He spent time painting alongside me, and even signed his initials on the weapon in the piece, just as he did in real life during his service. That small detail brought a deep authenticity to the painting, but what I'll remember most were the hours of conversation and sharing a meal together.

This portrait is part of my ongoing Warrior Series, a body of work created to honor America's most elite soldiers and to support the mission of The Light Foundation. It has been an incredible privilege to capture a glimpse of Kyle's journey through this piece, and I'm grateful for his trust and friendship.
