Bluegrass joined the Stray Rescue family in December 2024. At just 3 months old, he had been shot in the head and LIVED! He came to us all the way from Kentucky with a bullet entrance and exit wound on both sides of his head. The fact that he was still alive was a miracle. He spent the week in our clinic, where we learned he had a visual and hearing impairment, most likely from the gunshot. Despite his horrific situation, he was able to go to a foster home fairly quickly. He was so perfect in his foster home, and he was so, so loving. Not long after, a family in Ohio heard his story, and they knew they had to give him his forever home. They made a 16 hour round trip drive to St. Louis, and Bluegrass now lives his happily ever after.

Ripley showed up - tied outside of our shelter - in August 2024. She was so terribly matted; we couldn't even tell if she was a boy or girl. But there was also a large wound on her back. It was wet, it smelled like infection, and her hair was sloughing off. It took THREE people to shave her. Her hair was full of feces, she had urine burns on her underside, and she was just a bag of bones, so thin.

She was very unsure of what to do with herself during her healing journey. She wanted attention and love but kept running in circles. It was so sad. While she healed, we helped her gain confidence and promised her that she could trust humans. In mid-October, her forever family took her home. She has a sister that looks just like her, and she fits right in.

George, Judy, and Elroy Jetson were rescued from a horrible place in July 2024. As part of an active abuse case, they were found LOCKED in an abandoned house. It was so hot the day we discovered them. Left without food and water, their bellies were full of drywall, as they tried to eat anything to ease the hunger pains of starvation. They were all emaciated when they arrived to our clinic, but poor Elroy was in the worst condition of them all. He fought anemia, pneumonia, and parvo, but several weeks later, he was finally cleared for foster.

Today, George, Judy, and Elroy are all living peacefully in their forever homes, and we are so glad that we were able to rescue them.

Evangeline is a beautiful, bold girl who has been saved from a wretched, rough life on the streets. After being found in 2023 by a Good Samaritan, she received the medical care and nutrition she urgently needed. Her before and after photos help tell the story of her progress. She was adopted in June 2023, but the family was having problems handling her and returned her to us. We knew she just needed some extra help because she was so smart and loving. She spent three months in the Puppies for Parole Program, and now she is ready to enter the next phase of her new life.

Stray Rescue partners with the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center to have handlers in the prison system train some of our dogs. Through kind and humane methods, the pups are taught basic obedience cues. The pups live with their trainers and are housebroken and crate trained. Through the program, Evangeline has gained noticeable self-control and ability to focus on her trainers. Her adopter will receive the P4P Adopter's Manual issued by the Missouri Department of Corrections.

In the P4P program she does have dog friends. Her best friend matches are playful, social, male bully breeds who can handle her physical approach to play. After her deprived existence on the streets, we find that Evangeline does not share well when living in the same home with another dog. We also find that her love and enthusiasm for her people more than makes up for being the only dog. She loves to cuddle, go on walks, and she cannot wait to find her forever family.

It was Thanksgiving week, and Donna was out feeding the stray dogs as she usually does. Turducken was one of her regulars, and this time - it was his turn for his freedom ride. His rescue video is one of our favorites - pure joy. Turducken is living in a foster home, waiting for his forever family to find him. He is a gentle giant who loves to cuddle and is full of unconditional love.

In February 2025, a Good Samaritan brought in a tiny kitten that was unable to use her back legs. We estimated her to be around two months old, and she weighed under one pound. She was not in good shape, but she was still a happy, spunky kitty, so we wanted to give her every chance we could. We treated her with pain medications, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and nursing care. It became apparent after a few days that she had an abscess on her spine which required antibiotics and additional medical care. After treating her abscess, she was able to walk again and went to foster with one of our adoption team members. She is still a little wobbly, but she can run, play, and climb like a normal kitten!

On September 24, 2024, a man looked out his window to see a woman dumping two totes in his front yard. He ran out to see what they were, and he was shocked to see kittens starting back at him from inside the tote. He loaded the first tote into his car and hurried over to Stray Rescue. Inside, we found 8 kittens! It was so hot inside the tote, and the air holes were so small. He went home to get the second tote because they both wouldn't fit in his car. When we opened that one, we found two adult cats with 8 nursing kittens. This tote was even hotter. A total of 18 cats had been dumped carelessly in a front yard on a steamy September day. All of the cats were quickly placed in foster homes and ultimately found their forever families.

Levey came to Stray Rescue in February 2025. She was found tied up to a fence at an abandoned school, and she was horribly emaciated. It was a miracle that someone even saw her. She was so scared when she arrived, and you could see every bone in her body. The clinic staff made her feel safe right away, and despite her fears, she climbed into their laps for warmth and comfort. We estimated her to be about 2 years old, and she only weighed 23 pounds. We put her on a refeeding schedule, so that her frail, weak body didn't go into shock, and we tended to her medical needs. Once she was at a safe weight, she went to a foster home. Within two weeks, she had gained 14 pounds and was having so much fun with the resident dogs and cats. Her foster family took such great care of her, and now she is happily living in her forever home!

We found Belsnickel shivering on the side of the road on a very cold December day. We knew he had seen some very tough, very cold days. He wasn't just shivering, his whole body was shaking when we found him. He had an eye infection, he was emaciated, and he broke our hearts. We promised this 5-year-old gentleman that his worst days were behind him. After just a few days in our care, he was up and ready to go to foster. He needed a loving home to help him finish his healing journey. Belsnickel has come a long way over the past few months, and he is strong and playful again - who he was always meant to be.

Kimiko was found by a Good Samaritan and brought to Stray Rescue. As soon as she arrived, we knew that there were medical conditions that needed to be addressed. Every time she would eat or drink, she would regurgitate immediately. Our veterinarians performed x-rays that were indicative of a genetically inherited condition called persistent right Aortic arch. This complicated condition causes food to be trapped in the esophagus after swallowing and would leave to starvation if left untreated. We worked very closely with specialists at Mizzou for Kimiko's care, and one of the first things they did was put a feeding tube in her stomach so she could be fed externally. This meant that our clinic staff would feed her a liquid diet via the tube six times a day. Not only was this process difficult on Kimiko, but it was also difficult on the staff as they worked so hard to keep her alive, and all she wanted was to be a "normal" dog.

When she was strong enough, she went back to Mizzou for a very complicated open chest surgery to remove the obstruction from around her esophagus. We were all on pins and needles while she was in surgery as it wasn't a guarantee that she would survive. Thankfully, Kimiko's surgery went great, and she came back to the shelter where she could finally begin to recover. The most wonderful foster family reached out and wanted to take care of Kimiko. They gave her plenty of socialization and love while also paying special attention to her unique feeding plan. Kimiko continued to grow and thrive in her foster home.

Kimiko is now feeding tube FREE and living life as a normal dog - something we once could only dream of! Even more exciting? Her foster family fell in love with her, and they are now officially a forever family!

After the tornado struck North City St. Louis, Stray Rescue received numerous calls about dogs needing help. While responding to one of these calls, we heard a dog barking inside one of the houses. I tried to get a look through a broken window, but a large cabinet was blocking the window. As I went around to the side, I caught a glimpse of a dog bolting through the weeds.

We made our way around the front and were stopped by a couple saying they had seen that dog coming from the house and she looked to be nursing puppies. We certainly were not leaving without checking for puppies!

The first floor was covered in filthy, discarded items that had belonged to the previous owner. There was no sign of puppies on the first floor, so I headed up the steps. As I went up, I noticed the steps were covered with old lottery tickets. There were hundreds of them! But the real "winners" were the puppies standing at the top of the steps. Of course they scattered, but over the next hour we searched and grabbed puppies as we found them. The puppy in the photo was the last of seven puppies rescued that day. I thought we had them all but did one last look around and this little one was under a mattress.

We left a camera set up in the house. We knew if there happened to be another puppy hiding that mom would be back, and the puppy would come out with her. When we were absolutely certain the pups had all been rescued, we picked up mom.

In the end, this family was definitely a winner!

I passed by this house so many times on my way to check a trap. On one of my trips, I happened to look over and saw this kitty looking out at me through the tattered curtains. We looked at each other for a minute, and I guess he was curious enough about me that he stayed long enough for me to capture this moment. Then in an instant he disappeared inside. There are so many feral cats running as strays on the street. I have not seen this cat since that day.

This tan pittie called this house "home." This call was not unlike the others we have received in the past. An abandoned house with an animal living inside. Most times we find an open door or window that the dog is able to go in/out. But this time, the dog truly seemed stuck on the second floor. It seemed like he had the entire floor to move around based on the window that he would pop up in.

As we tried to figure out how to get him out, a neighbor informed us that he did have an owner that actually came by every day to check on him and make sure he had food & water. This house had burned and while the owner was figuring out where to go, he wasn't able to have his dog with him, so he kept him here. Although it definitely was not an ideal situation for the dog, he didn't end up being surrendered to an already overcrowded shelter.

This little shy cutie is named Tarot. She spent time growing up on the street before I was able to rescue her. She wanted to trust me so badly. Sometimes she would even do a little army crawl to come up to get the Vienna Sausages I put down. But each time I tried to get out the leash, she wanted nothing to do with me. I tried the trap too, but she never showed any interest in going in.

She started to have a couple male "friends" hang out with her, so it was time to ramp up the rescue efforts. I set a trap up near their house and bungeed it open so they could all get used to going in/out with nothing happening. This helps them believe it is safe and then after a bit of time we actually set the trap, and they are already comfortable going in and easily trapped. This seemed to work! I was able to get the boys first and just two days later Tarot finally decided it was ok to go all the way in.

The two boys adjusted quickly and are absolutely adorable together. Tarot is adjusting to her foster home and gave birth to 7 healthy babies.

The expression captured on this stray's face is one we see way too often. There is a sad, empty, lifelessness in his eyes. He shows no joy, no tail wags, no pittie "smile." It truly seems as though the only thing he has to look forward to is seeing the jeep and knowing there will be food.

This handsome boy started to stay with a beautiful, female Pyrenees along with a couple other males. I had been trying to get the female for months with no luck. Now that she had these new friends, they started to stay in an abandoned store with only one way out. I knew this would be my chance to get her since she had completely avoided my traps in the past. I was finally lucky enough to get her and started working on rescuing the males. Unfortunately, before I was able to get this handsome boy he disappeared, and I have not seen him since. I still look for him when I am over feeding in the hopes that he will surface again.

This pup was one of six siblings. They lived at this house but always stayed outside. Their mom was around for a while too, but then I no longer saw her. I know the owner of the dogs had been reached out to about getting help and possibly surrendering at least some of the dogs. But her response was "I want each of my children to have a puppy." Never mind the fact that none of the kids ever paid any attention to the puppies or fed them. But it's a fine line to walk when dealing with community members. The number of puppies slowly started to decrease. I can't be certain about their whereabouts, but I think a couple had been liberated from their situation.

Winter Home

I had been seeing this male for a bit when I went to feed. He was not in bad shape and because there was no space at the shelter, I really needed to keep an eye on him until I could rescue him. Pretty soon, I realized he had a female friend with him. She was already looking a little "round" so trying to figure out a rescue plan needed to happen sooner than later. Part of the problem was that after I started to see them together, they weren't super consistent about where they would pop up, so I wouldn't see them on a regular basis.

I got word that she had actually had her puppies, but we didn't know where. A community member had said that both dogs were coming to her house every morning, and she would feed them. So, we sat at her house one morning and sure enough, they showed up like a happy couple just going for morning breakfast.

After she finished eating, she trotted off down the road, so we trailed behind. We made sure to stay far enough back that we didn't spook her. She walked down the road, crossed a busy street, and kept going until she cut through a couple houses. I got around to the next street over and there she was, heading back to a very familiar abandoned house. Through the years, I had pulled a few litters out from under this house. The problem became that the guy who lived next door was not a very nice man. And he definitely didn't like me because I had taken "his puppies" from under this house before.

I could hear her barking at me when I went to the opening of the crawl space, but she sounded so far away. I figured she just had them way on the other end of the space under the house. The other obstacle to overcome was dad. He would sit near the house and bark to protect mom and puppies. I was able to set my trailcam up under the house so I could keep track of mom and dad coming and going.

I knew the puppies were under the house, so I set two traps and got lucky enough to get both parents quickly. We loaded them into our cars so they wouldn't bark and because the temps were freezing. I maneuvered into the crawl space and made my way to the farthest part (which would have been the front of the house). There was no sign of the puppies, and I never heard them crying. I crawled from one end to the other searching under that house. I started thinking I had been wrong about the location of the puppies. But if I was, why was mom always going in/out from under the house? I searched everywhere and even found some small tunnels, but still no puppies. I went back towards the front part of the house and finally noticed a hole in the floor leading up into the actual house. I squeezed through and saw the front room of the house full of insulation and building supplies. Mom was smart!!! It had been some of the coldest temps this winter and mom had the puppies in a cocoon of insulation. I peeked inside, and there were the puppies. Finally! I pulled them out one by one and put them in a small carrier. Mom sure had done a great job feeding and taking care of them!

With puppies in tow inside the carrier, I crawled back to the opening and headed for the warm jeep. Mom and puppies were reunited and went to a foster home. Dad only spent a couple days at the shelter and left for foster as well. His foster family fell in love and adopted him. Mom and all puppies have since been adopted, too.

This pup ended up being very elusive, apparently not wanting to be rescued. I spotted him early one morning while out feeding. He was very interested in the Vienna sausages but never got close. I set a trap, but he would not come anywhere near it. He took off behind an abandoned building and went into some thick weeds where I completely lost track of him. I drove around and checked as many areas as I could see that he might be able to go with no luck at all. I pass by the area frequently and still keep an eye out for him, but I have never seen him since that day.

This squishy face was just hanging out of the second story of this big brick building. The building is owned, and according to the small shop next door, the owner comes by every day to check on the dog and spend time with him. We have driven by multiple times and have never seen the dog back up in the window.

When I first started seeing this boy, he was in the yard of a corner house in Washington Park. There were other dogs in the yard with him, and I wouldn't always see him, so I assumed the people that lived there would periodically let the dog inside. But pretty soon I started seeing him by this trash can going through the trash, then he would sneak back in the gate. He was the only one I would see now, and he started to roam farther away. I felt bad that he was always by himself and was too nervous to come up to me. He would always come running when he saw the jeep though, so I quickly set a trap one day and waited for him to go in. Thankfully he was hungrier than he was scared to go in, and he got his freedom ride. I named him Odin, and he is happy in his new home.

It was a cold, snowy day when I spotted this tan dog by a building I have passed a million times. The way he was standing there, it looked as though the painted alien was looking down on him. I had never seen him before and he wasn't in bad shape, so I wondered if he had just gotten out from his home. He was certainly skittish but a little curious. I tossed a couple Vienna sausages, and he ate them up, but still no interest in coming up to me.

This boy had no interest in going with me that day. He ate a few more sausages then off he went. As hard as it is to see them and not rescue them every single time, sometimes that is just the reality.

While the owner of this bike sat and socialized with all his buddies on a frigid day, this neighborhood kitty decided to perch herself on the seat of his bike for a bit. The people in the neighborhood keep an eye on the cats that roam. And if you look closely at the photo, her ear is tipped so she is also spayed and will not add to the stray population.

With the over-crowded shelters, TNR (trap, neuter, return) is truly the best option for these cats. And the people in the neighborhoods really do care about them.

"Home" to this trio was an abandoned, dilapidated old store. They found shelter here, and it's where I finally found a way to rescue the white Pyrenees. She originally stayed by herself on a run down, overgrown property. When I would pull up in my jeep, she would come running to eat, but when a trap was set, she went nowhere near it.

I was happy to see her move around the corner to that abandoned store, but I knew there were males now hanging out with her, and she was in heat. I needed to figure out a way to rescue her before she had puppies.

I started feeding them inside the building, so they were comfortable with me being in there too. I scoped out the building to make sure there was only one exit and when the time was right, I blocked the door with them inside and was able to rescue her.

By this time though, the tan pup had already moved on and the spotted dog disappeared soon after I got the female. I still watch for both of them, and it bothers me that I wasn't able to rescue them as well.
