It was a freezing cold February day in St. Louis. The "neighborhood dog" didn't show up for his daily breakfast. Concerned neighbors were worried and started looking for him. They found him, beaten up and injured by another dog, hiding in an abandoned house. They rushed to get him blankets and called for help. He was covered in bite wounds and needed immediate medical attention. After some coaxing, we got him into the rescue Jeep. Once we got him to the clinic and he had an initial intake exam, he slept in his crate for days. We knew he was still in a lot of pain, but we were glad that he could finally relax. After several days of antibiotics and pain meds, Peso really opened up. He became a clinic and volunteer favorite, and everyone was ecstatic when he found his forever home.

Bluegrass joined the Stray Rescue family in December 2024. At just 3 months old, he had been shot in the head and LIVED! He came to us all the way from Kentucky with a bullet entrance and exit wound on both sides of his head. The fact that he was still alive was a miracle. He spent the week in our clinic, where we learned he had a visual and hearing impairment, most likely from the gunshot. Despite his horrific situation, he was able to go to a foster home fairly quickly. He was so perfect in his foster home, and he was so, so loving. Not long after, a family in Ohio heard his story, and they knew they had to give him his forever home. They made a 16 hour round trip drive to St. Louis, and Bluegrass now lives his happily ever after.

Rubber Ducky had been roaming the neighborhood and was found by a Good Samaritan. He was such a beautiful pup - how could anyone let him go missing? The family wanted to keep him at first, but then they realized that they weren't exactly up for adding a puppy to their life. They brought him to Stray Rescue, and we promised to take the best care of him and give him the best life possible. Rubber Ducky spent a few days at the shelter before going to a foster home. His foster family adored him, they ultimately found him a forever home. Rubber Ducky never has to worry about wandering around the streets again!

Smurf came to us in April 2025 after being found as a stray. He was so sweet but timid when he first arrived, but he quickly went to a foster home where he could be more comfortable. He loves to snuggle and sticks right by his foster mom's side. He is cat-friendly, and he adores his teenage human foster siblings. Smurf is absolutely the sweetest 7 month old puppy around, and he cannot wait to find his forever home.

We received a call in late November about a dog living in a crate. The caller wasn't sure, but they could see something else in the crate and thought it might have been a second dog that had passed away. We rushed to the scene, and thankfully, what the caller thought was a second dog was just a fluffy blanket. The temperatures were too cold, too dangerous, too deadly to keep dogs outside. Blankets freeze and crates are not enough to be considered "shelter." We were so thankful that the Good Samaritan reached out to us when they did.

We scooped her up, and we got her into the warm Jeep to rush her back to Stray Rescue. She was emaciated, dehydrated, and malnourished, and she had open wounds on her legs, but we couldn't help but be captivated by her perfectly pink nose and dazzling eyes. We named her Glinda, and despite the pain she was in, she stopped the vet during her examination to give us the most gentle thank you kiss. We promised her there was no going back, and she would have only the best from there. Glinda safely gained weight and got her strength back. We learned how much she loves to go on walks, play with toys, and snuggle up with her favorite people. Glinda the Good Witch is going to make a family so happy one day, we just know it.

A call came in on a frigid January day about a dog in a parking lot. He was sitting in the sun, trying to warm his cold, aching bones. He had gashes on his side and possible puncture wounds on his legs. Thankfully, it didn't take Donna long to win him over, and he officially became Sunny D. We got him back to the shelter and checked out by the veterinary staff, and we realized quickly that he was the biggest snuggle bug around! We were so glad that we were able to get him out from the cold.

Sunny D loves going for walks, playing in the yard, and going on adventures. He is so deserving of a family that will love him, cuddle with him, and keep him safe.

Ripley showed up - tied outside of our shelter - in August 2024. She was so terribly matted; we couldn't even tell if she was a boy or girl. But there was also a large wound on her back. It was wet, it smelled like infection, and her hair was sloughing off. It took THREE people to shave her. Her hair was full of feces, she had urine burns on her underside, and she was just a bag of bones, so thin.

She was very unsure of what to do with herself during her healing journey. She wanted attention and love but kept running in circles. It was so sad. While she healed, we helped her gain confidence and promised her that she could trust humans. In mid-October, her forever family took her home. She has a sister that looks just like her, and she fits right in.

We named her Joybird. The police called us after finding her left on the side of the road after being hit by a car. She was in a lot of pain - she had a broken pelvis and a lot of bruising, as well as some lacerations. Due to her broken pelvis, she couldn't put weight on her hind legs and required FHO surgery. We took her out in a stroller to make sure she still got to experience sunshine. After months of healing in the clinic and in a medical foster home, Joybird found her forever home. We are still so grateful to the officers who called us that day and saved her life.

George, Judy, and Elroy Jetson were rescued from a horrible place in July 2024. As part of an active abuse case, they were found LOCKED in an abandoned house. It was so hot the day we discovered them. Left without food and water, their bellies were full of drywall, as they tried to eat anything to ease the hunger pains of starvation. They were all emaciated when they arrived to our clinic, but poor Elroy was in the worst condition of them all. He fought anemia, pneumonia, and parvo, but several weeks later, he was finally cleared for foster.

Today, George, Judy, and Elroy are all living peacefully in their forever homes, and we are so glad that we were able to rescue them.

Levey came to Stray Rescue in February 2025. She was found tied up to a fence at an abandoned school, and she was horribly emaciated. It was a miracle that someone even saw her. She was so scared when she arrived, and you could see every bone in her body. The clinic staff made her feel safe right away, and despite her fears, she climbed into their laps for warmth and comfort. We estimated her to be about 2 years old, and she only weighed 23 pounds. We put her on a refeeding schedule, so that her frail, weak body didn't go into shock, and we tended to her medical needs. Once she was at a safe weight, she went to a foster home. Within two weeks, she had gained 14 pounds and was having so much fun with the resident dogs and cats. Her foster family took such great care of her, and now she is happily living in her forever home!

Despite her circumstances, she was the sweetest thing who loved to get love whether it was compliments or belly rubs. We were so thankful that she found her way to us so we could make sure that she lived a beautiful life full of love and peace.

Mr. Dimples came to us as a 5-month-old puppy who had been shot twice - near his shoulder and in his head. Miraculously, he survived. And not only that, he would even smile. His wounds were deep, but nothing was broken. His body was full of shrapnel fragments. Our veterinarian believed the gunshots did not happen at the same time. One wound was healing while the other was fresh. We fell madly in love with him, talking to him softly and giving him the love and comfort he had been callously denied. After he had made some progress in his recovery, he went to a medical foster who would allow him to heal in peace and give him all of the one-on-one attention that he deserved. His foster loved him so much, they knew they couldn't bear to part with him, so now he's a part of their family forever!

Sharky first came to Stray Rescue in 2024 after a nice woman found her on a freezing day and kept her cozy in her house until she could safely get her to us. Her rescuer said she did great with her dogs at home and would have loved to keep her if she could have. We named her Sharky after her favorite stuffy that she came in with. She was adopted not long after, but she was returned after living in a home for a year. Though it was not her fault, the resident senior dog could no longer tolerate her, and it had become an unsafe situation for both dogs involved.

The transition back to living at the shelter has been difficult for Sharky, but her staff and volunteer friends do everything they can to make her more comfortable. She is a lovable, playful girl with a gentle heart and joyful spirit. She thrives on companionship and is happiest when she's out on long walks with her dog friends or running around the yard, soaking up the sunshine. Sharky has a sweet and affectionate nature. She's the kind of dog who leans in for cuddles and gives you that look that says, "I love you already."

She's easy to fall in love with. Whether you're an active person who enjoys outdoor adventures or someone who just wants a loyal friend to share the couch with, Sharky is ready to be by your side. We received a call about a dog with an embedded collar. Hiding deep in the bushes, we spotted a young pup with big, scared eyes. We noticed that all of the skin on her neck had been cut open by a very tight cable. We had to carefully coax her out because we did not want to put a leash on her wound. She was frightened but brave and eventually trusted us enough to come with us.

When we got her to the clinic, we immediately got that horrible cable off and got an up-close look at her horrifying wound. Our veterinarians estimated that she was only about a year old, but by the amount of exposed tissue, they could tell that the tight cable had been on her for months. The pain and fear this little babe had faced for the majority of her life is unfathomable. We removed the cable and stitched the wound, and she was finally able to begin her healing journey.

We'll never forget the horrifying day we met this brave boy. He had infected bite wounds on his face and legs, but the most shocking injury was to the skin around his jaw and chin. It had been completely degloved, almost looking like his jaw was missing! He had been tied to a dumpster - discarded like trash. Thankfully he was found by a compassionate woman who took him home and called for help. His rescuers rushed to pick him up and bring him back to the safety of Stray Rescue. When he laid down in the back of the Jeep and gave a deep sigh, he knew he was finally safe.

The world rallied around Spartacus throughout his healing journey, confident in Stray Rescue's ability to save his life. After extensive reconstructive surgery and consistent wound care by our skilled surgeon, Spartacus made a miraculous recovery, and now he's the happiest and strongest boy! He's grateful for his second chance and is loved by ALL who meet him.

When Nandor the Relentless first came to us in mid-September 2024, we thought his legs were broken. He couldn't walk, and his legs were super swollen. After being examined by our veterinarians, we found out that it was all due to a skin infection that was raging inside of him. He must have been suffering for months. His joints were weak, he had open sores on his legs, and he had severe inner ear issues causing vestibular disease which resulted in loss of balance, a head tilt, and disorientation. He couldn't stand up at all, but he leaned in for love. After just a few days of nourishment and medical attention, he began showing signs of significant improvement. He could walk again, and his spirits had been lifted.

Nandor spent 8 wonderful months in a foster home. At 14 years old, he was finally able to live the life he always dreamed of. Despite it all, our sweet Nandor passed away on May 8, 2025. His foster family kept him as comfortable as they could for the time that they had with him, and he passed peacefully, full of dignity, and surrounded by love. We will never forget you, Nandor the Relentless.

Lima Bean was rescued by Stray Rescue in July 2024 after being injured by another dog. It was pretty serious, but her mighty spirit persevered. Her personality quickly blossomed, and we saw how smart, confident, and playful she was. She loves playing with other dogs, and she quickly found her forever home once she was fully recovered.

When temperatures drop well below freezing, every rescue is a huge victory. On a freezing day in November, a call came in about a pup that had wandered up to someone's house. She looked like she had escaped life on a chain, but thankfully, the house she chose to ask for help had the nicest people inside. She was covered in scabs and scars, she was dehydrated, had a strange healed wound on her back, and had clearly had lots of puppies in her lifetime. As soon as she laid on the warm blanket in the rescue Jeep, this exhausted pup fell sound asleep. We named her Tinsel, and we were so thankful to have saved her.

Zeppelin arrived at Stray Rescue unable to use his back legs. X-rays showed that he had multiple pelvic fractures that would require strict cage rest. He stayed in the clinic for a few months for nursing care, but he became increasingly stronger and eventually was able to walk again. He was very vocal as he healed, and he wanted nothing more than to be doted on. Staff would take turns visiting with him to give him all of the love and attention he deserved while keeping him calm so as to not disrupt his cage rest. He was on a medical hold with us for almost two months, and as soon as he was ready, he went to his forever home. Zeppelin is the sweetest, happiest guy, and we are so lucky to have been able to give him a second chance at life.

On a very rainy November day, a Good Samaritan watched as a German Shepherd was pushed out of an SUV and left behind in a park. They called us immediately and let us know that they had the license plate and had recorded the incident. We knew we needed to move quickly to find her before the night set in. It took about two hours, but Donna found her covered in mud and whimpering. On top of that, she was pregnant. Her rescue video left all of us in tears but thankful we had the opportunity to make everything right for her. Mudder went to foster where she could have her babies in peace. She ended up giving birth to TEN puppies - Mudstone, Mudslinger, Mudslide, Mudskipper, Mudpuppy, Mudhen, Mudguard, Mudfish, Mudcat, and Mudcap. Unfortunately, Mudcap did not make it, but the remaining nine were healthy, and Mudder was an amazing mom. She spent several weeks caring for her babies until they were ready to find families of their own. Nine families stepped up to adopt each of the pups and ensure that they would never experience anything like what their mom had. Mudder then got to focus on herself and get all of the love and attention she deserved from her foster family. Today, Mudder is still waiting for her forever family. She is so sweet, she loves other dogs, and she is ready to be in a home that will give her the happiest ever after of all.

This very skinny boy showed up at someone's house, and thankfully they were able to contain him until we could pick him up. His skin was pink and raw from infection, and his nails were so long. It had to have been painful to walk. He was so exhausted that he fell asleep on his freedom ride. He was treated for demodex mange, and he made his way into a foster home. He was finally able to be a dog and be loved on by humans - what he always wanted. Lorenzo found his forever home at the beginning of this year, and he is never looking back!

After receiving a video of a dog with his jaw stuck open, we knew we had to help him immediately. He was in rural Missouri about four hours from the shelter, but with the help of a transporter, we were able to meet halfway and get him directly to our clinic. We named him Dob. After many tests, dental x-rays, and CT scans, it was determined that his jaw was dislocated so badly that it had locked and was stuck open. Having his jaw out of place for so long caused the soft tissue to thicken and swell behind his eye forming a knot that bulged his eye. Dob had to wear a muzzle for six weeks so his jaw wouldn't pop open and lock again. He was the most patient man living with his mouth muzzled shut, only being removed for short bouts of time for eating soft food, drinking water, and taking his meds. His eye also had to be sutured shut (temporarily), so that it wouldn't ulcerate from all of the added pressure. After six long weeks, we were able to remove Dob's muzzle, and boy was he ready to live his hound dog life! Full of playfulness and energy, Dob quickly found his forever home.

Sweet, silly Caroline Polachek was spotted running around Forest Park by one of our Stray Rescue volunteers. We quickly learned that she would keep us all entertained and put the biggest smiles on our faces! She spent the majority of her time in the shelter as Cassady's office dog, and she quickly took over as CEO! She would spend her free time on the desk looking out of the window and keeping a watchful eye on all shelter comings and goings! One weekend, a beautiful family hit the jackpot and took Caroline home to foster. They fell head over heels in love with her (as expected!) and decided that she could stay forever!

Bison was a transfer from the APA Olivette in February 2025 when they needed to clear their shelter for animal control. Bison came to us and instantly became a staff and volunteer favorite! He is so handsome! He loves to go on adventures, play with friends, and cuddle up with humans. He also LOVES car rides! At just 3.5 years old, Bison has the best life ahead of him - he just needs his forever family to scoop him up!

Sherbet showed up at a scrap yard during an excessive heat wave in July 2024. The workers gave her water but realized she was in poor condition and needed rescue. We picked her up and fell in love with this gentle girl! She stayed in the clinic for a few days to be treated for dehydration and malnourishment. Sherbet - just like her name - melts into you when you're petting her. All she wants are hugs and belly rubs. She is a little particular about other dogs, so she is a member of our One Love Club, but we promise that Sherbet has more enough love in that heart of hers to give to her future family. Shelter life is hard on Sherbet, but she has some great friends that make sure to spoil her whenever they can.

Beckham came to Stray Rescue on a freezing cold day in February 2025. He was hiding under trucks in a parking lot, trying to shield himself from the whipping winds. The moment he was in the rescue Jeep, he didn't know his size and climbed in our laps, on our heads...he just couldn't get close enough! He wanted hugs and kisses and treats and love - all the things he's been denied for so long. Beckham did not know a stranger, and staff and volunteers ADORED him. We were so excited when he found his forever home.

Cardi B was rescued after being abandoned on the side of a road. She was missing most of her hair, she was covered in fleas and ticks, and we thought she had a broken pelvis because she couldn't stand up or walk. Once she got to our clinic, the staff realized she was just an older gal plagued with arthritis in her hips and knees, and she had clearly been neglected. She stayed in the clinic where she received pain medication and physical therapy. She was so sweet despite the terrible pain she was in, and we could tell she had happy puppy energy within her. After a few weeks, she was able to start using a wheelchair (made specially for her!), so she could begin to regain strength in her back legs. She loved being able to have a bit of her independence back! Everything went according to her medical plan, and she is now living happily in her forever home where she can run, walk, and play fetch with her family without any assistance.

Kalista came to Stray Rescue after being found running loose in rural Missouri. Once she was caught, the finders reached out to us asking if we could help her. Of course, we said yes. It appeared as though she was a puppy when someone put a large collar on her, doubled over, and then never took it off. As she grew up, her body grew around the collar, and it became severely embedded, cutting all the way around her throat. We estimated her to be about 1.5 years old when she arrived, so she had likely been in pain most of her life. We removed the collar and treated her with pain meds and antibiotics to help get rid of the nasty infection that had developed. She healed nicely, but she was still so timid and shy. Once she was medically cleared, she went to a foster home where she finally got to be a dog. She learned to trust her foster parents. She learned to walk on a leash and play with toys and how awesome cuddling was. She was finally free of her past. In April, Kalista found her forever family. She was a whole new dog - confident and friendly and so excited to start the rest of her life.

We received a call from the National Park Service Ground Maintenance about a large, injured dog under the Poplar Street Bridge. When we arrived, we could see he was not able to use his right front leg . In pain and so scared, he kept snarling and curling his lip. We know to respect an animal and give them space, especially when they're in pain. So, we used the biggest trap we had to ensure he had enough space to walk in without tripping and further injuring his swollen leg. Once in the trap, it look 6 guys to help us load this BIG boy in the Jeep! We named him Big Ben, after one of the Ground Maintenance crew members who had called us.

An x-ray revealed that Big Ben's injury was the result of a gunshot. His shoulder was completely shattered. His injuries were so severe that he required an amputation which can be so difficult on a dog that weighs more than 100 lbs. Big Ben was a member of our One Love Club and enjoyed spending time with his volunteer and staff friends at the shelter. With an amputated front leg combined with his large size, it became increasingly difficult over time for Big Ben to walk since he had to put so much weight on one front leg. We did everything medically possible to keep him strong and comfortable, but over time, it became too difficult for him to even stand up. We made the difficult decision to help him cross the rainbow bridge with dignity and respect, after being adopted by one of our compassionate staff members. We miss our friend, but we were happy to give him the second chance he needed for a happy life filled with love.

January 2025 was a horribly cold and snowy month for us in the St. Louis area. One day when the temperatures were in the single digits, we found a dog living all alone in an abandoned building. Because it had been so cold, the snow and ice wasn't melting, causing hazardous situations for people and animals. When we found this little girl, we found blood in her paw prints in the snow. Her feet were bleeding from being out in the brutal elements.

She was so scared at first when we found her. She wanted to trust us so badly, but she couldn't take that leap of faith to come close enough to get a lead over her head. So we set a trap. Thankfully, she went in as she couldn't resist a warm breakfast in her skinny body.

Some of our police friends and heroes, Officer Ottengheime and Officer Stevens, were patrolling the area and met us at the property to help carry the trap down a steep staircase, covered in ice. We finally got her loaded in the warm Jeep and knew her feet were finally thawing. When we got her into the shelter and out of the trap, she climbed up in everyone's lap giving thankful wet kisses to everyone. She's been the most affectionate little bundle of joy now that she is safe! We named her Dippin' Dottie because of those adorable little spots in her black and white coat.

Lady Jif came to us in September 2024 with every rib and her spine protruding. She weighed a mere 23 pounds, kept her tail tucked, and made herself as small as possible. Meet Maeze! She was trapped after hiding in the woods for several days scrounging for food. Her back legs were injured, but she's all healed and ready to go home. Maeze loves other dogs, but due to her high energy, some dogs aren't fans. Maeze would do best living with another dog that loves to play. Tillie came to us in March 2025. Her rescue video was absolutely gut wrenching. She was hit by a car and left in the middle of a very big, very busy street. Police officers were driving by when they saw her flopping in the middle of the street. They pulled over and got her to the sidewalk but were scared to lift her - they thought she had spinal damage because she could barely move. We picked her up and rushed her to our clinic. She was in shock and her body temperature was rising dangerously high. We placed ice packs on her pulse points to cool her down. She still couldn't walk, but thankfully her x-rays did not show signs of serious injury or broken bones. Tillie spent the night at a 24 hour emergency clinic to make sure she would receive care all night long. Six year old Tillie stole our hearts. She was weak and sore, but she was alive and adorable. After spending some time in our clinic being monitored, Tillie was ready to go to a medical foster home. We knew that a nice, quiet home would be just what she needed. Her foster family says that she is the sweetest girl who barely makes a noise. She is gentle, loyal, friendly, and loving towards everyone she meets. We are so glad that we were able to save this sweet girl, and now we are all patiently waiting for her to find her forever family.

On Valentine's Day 2025, we rescued a mother and her puppies from a horrible situation. She was chained to a doghouse, living outside and taking care of her babies in freezing cold temperatures. We were so thankful to rescue all of them and get them to safety. Despite living outside, the puppies were nice and chunky, thanks to their wonderful mother, giving them every bit of what she had. But the little runt, who we named Flirt, was super small in comparison to the others weighing in at just 1.75 pounds. The following morning, Flirt was limp and so weak that we thought he had passed away. We rushed him to the emergency hospital and found out he was FULL of several parasites, and they were stealing all of his energy from him. Even though we gave him all of the necessary vaccinations upon arrival, the parasites were too strong. He couldn't maintain his glucose levels, and he had underdeveloped intestines. We visited everyday, and even the emergency clinic staff fell in love with this tiny little boy. A few days later, he gained enough strength that he could be released back into our care. One day at a time, we nursed this little one to a healthy weight. And now, he looks like the most normal, chubby puppy - you would have no idea what he went through! Flirt is exactly as his name suggests - he loves life, he loves flirting with everyone he meets, he loves playing with other dogs, and he especially loves toys. What a scary start for this little guy!

Bean Head was found on the streets in January 2025. It was far too cold for him to be outside with no shelter. Thankfully, he was in pretty good shape! Bean Head is just two years old, and he has so many human friends here at Stray Rescue. He's hoping that his future family finds him soon, so he can soak up all of the love and goodness that he deserves!

Sir Lancelot was found as a stray. He was extremely emaciated. Being a Belgian Malinois mix, he weighed only 52 pounds when he arrived. Sir Lancelot quickly gained weight, and his personality started to shine through. We knew he was so smart, and he needed to get into the right home as soon as possible! About 6 weeks after coming into our care, Sir Lancelot found his forever family. He was so ready to leave his old life behind him and start out on his newest adventure!

When we picked up Kegan on the side of the road, she was all kinds of broken. She was hit by a car and left laying there, unable to stand on her own. We picked up this big, gentle girl, and fell in love immediately. She was so sad and in so much pain. She had a major surgery and required months of recovery. We're proud to say we were able to save her legs (after putting in plates and screws), and she made a full recovery!

And now - LOOK AT HER! She found her forever home and has a doggy sister she adores. We love you, Kegan! You deserve this beautiful life.

Stevie Nicks was rescued in 2015, emaciated and full of bullets. We nursed her back to health and fell in love with this quirky girl. She had some neuro issues we worked through, along with her stranger danger. But if you were in her inner circle, she loved to dress up and dance for her friends!

In 2024 after nearly 10 years in the shelter, a wonderful couple wanted to meet her and get to know her. She loved them pretty much instantly. They took her on outings and to sleepovers at their house, giving her all the time she needed to feel safe with them. In May 2024, they adopted her! A Good Samaritan found Robyn in a motel parking lot in October 2024. Despite her large Cane Corso frame, she was extremely emaciated and weak. Her overall spirit was low, and you could tell she had had a difficult life. Robyn spent time in our clinic on a refeeding schedule until she developed more strength and gained some weight. Our staff and volunteers quickly fell for this mellow, senior lady. She is so gentle, and she often works with our volunteers in training because she is so mild mannered. Robyn does experience separation anxiety, so she unfortunately has been adopted and returned a few times, but now she is adopted to someone who understands her! We love this sweet girl so much.

Evangeline is a beautiful, bold girl who has been saved from a wretched, rough life on the streets. After being found in 2023 by a Good Samaritan, she received the medical care and nutrition she urgently needed. Her before and after photos help tell the story of her progress. She was adopted in June 2023, but the family was having problems handling her and returned her to us. We knew she just needed some extra help because she was so smart and loving. She spent three months in the Puppies for Parole Program, and now she is ready to enter the next phase of her new life.

Stray Rescue partners with the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center to have handlers in the prison system train some of our dogs. Through kind and humane methods, the pups are taught basic obedience cues. The pups live with their trainers and are housebroken and crate trained. Through the program, Evangeline has gained noticeable self-control and ability to focus on her trainers. Her adopter will receive the P4P Adopter's Manual issued by the Missouri Department of Corrections.

In the P4P program she does have dog friends. Her best friend matches are playful, social, male bully breeds who can handle her physical approach to play. After her deprived existence on the streets, we find that Evangeline does not share well when living in the same home with another dog. We also find that her love and enthusiasm for her people more than makes up for being the only dog. She loves to cuddle, go on walks, and she cannot wait to find her forever family.

We rescued the frowniest little guy, who was all alone on the streets in October 2024. He was hunched up like a little gargoyle, defeated. He was very scared and clearly had some pain. He was not using his back end very well, and he had bite wounds all over his legs and neck. His sad, scared eyes were so goopy. He realized that we were there to save him, and once he got in the car, he relaxed. After getting him to our clinic, the veterinary staff checked him out to find out that he was heartworm positive and that he had probably been in a few fights with other dogs. He has a back injury that will require lifelong care, but - he healed up beautifully. Guillermo de la Cruz now lives with his forever family who is giving him the perfect life he always deserved.

Polar Bear was brought to us by a Good Samaritan after being found in the cold in January. He had a bad ear infection that needed medical attention, but that didn't stop him from being the biggest goofball in the clinic! With the right medications and some good ole TLC, Polar Bear recovered quickly and became a staff favorite. In fact, one staff member loved him so much, he knew he had to bring him home himself. Polar Bear is the happiest boy now that he has a family that loves him and takes care of him every single day.

We received a call about a very sick puppy. When we pulled up to get her, we were horrified at her condition. This poor girl. Her skin was pink, scabby, and swollen to the point that she could barely open her eyes. It hurt just to look at her - we could only imagine the pain and discomfort she was in. We got her safely to the clinic where they determined she had demodex mange. Her case was so severe, she couldn't even stand up by herself. We gave her a medicated bath, antibiotics, and pain medication to allow her to rest. About a week later, she was able to stand up on her own, and she went to a medical foster to heal. It's amazing what love can do for a dog. She came for a checkup about 5 weeks later, and she had already transformed into a new dog. She was unrecognizable in the best way possible! Devonna continued to heal and learn how to be a puppy in her foster home, and she now lives happily in her forever home.

Tapioca got her freedom ride on July 4, 2024. She was covered head to toe in old scars and appeared to be just about a year and a half old. She had a large wound full of pus on her face, conjunctivitis, and fly strikes on her horribly cropped ears (suggesting she had been outside for a while). She was very much underweight, and she had some hair loss. This girl was the sweetest angel despite what she had been through. Our veterinary staff got her cleaned up and gave her the medical attention she so desperately needed. Tapioca quickly found her forever home, and she is still the happiest girl in the world.

Meet Bartholomew Kuma, a very good boy. One of our staff members spotted him after work one day running through rush hour traffic. After calling for reinforcements, she and a few others were able to wrangle this sweet boy and get him safely to the shelter. We learned quickly that Bartholomew Kuma loved all people, especially kids! We took him to Ted Drewes for a photo shoot, and his tail would wag like crazy when a little kid would ask to pet him. We knew he was perfect. Thanks to that day at Ted Drewes, a chance encounter ended up being his forever home. His new mom met him, fell in love, and called a few days later saying she couldn't stop thinking about him. What a perfect way to start the next - and best - chapter of his life!

Boa was brought to Stray Rescue in September 2024. At first, we thought she was just a skinny little puppy coming to us with cherry eye. When we actually met her, we were astounded. This little girl was actually about 5 years old, and she had been through some terrible abuse. After a veterinary exam and x-rays, we found ourselves asking "What hasn't been broken?" Her list of old, neglected injuries continued to grow, and her mouth was full of broken teeth. The amount of abuse that Boa had endured was unfathomable, and she was left to recover on her own with no medical attention, no pain medication, and no love. After weeks in our care and in a foster home, Boa began to gain weight and heal. She learned how to play with toys and other dogs, and she finally has the chance to be a dog herself and experience love and safety. Boa is currently enrolled in our P4P (Puppies for Parole) program, and she is thriving!

Prairie was transported to Stray Rescue three days after being hit by a car on a busy St. Louis highway. Good Samaritans saw it, jumped out of their car, and helped her. She was in so much pain, they had a hard time getting her in their car, but those heroes weren't going to leave her. They fundraised like crazy and got her into an emergency clinic for the weekend. The emergency clinic determined she had not one, not two, but THREE broken legs. She also had pulmonary contusions, which is fluid around her lungs. The clinic was able to get her stable and her legs splinted. Because of the intensity and cost of her anticipated recovery, the clinic recommended euthanasia. The Good Samaritans reached out to us to see if we could take her, and we said yes.

Despite what she had gone through, her spirit was so bright! She had to have many surgeries and was able to keep three of her legs. By the end of the year, she had found her forever family. She is happier than ever, and she is living her very best life.

It was a late November morning, and Donna was out feeding her strays. This guy came running down the street to her. Actually, more like hobbled down the street. His front leg was broken, and he was covered head to toe in bite wounds, including wounds that went all the way through his chin to the inside of his mouth. She got him in her jeep and took him straight to the clinic. They named this sweet boy Plymouth and began tending to him immediately. Unfortunately, Plymouth ended up losing his broken leg. Too much damage had been done, and he needed an amputation. However, being on three legs does not slow him down! He is waiting for his soulmate to show up and bring him to his forever home.

Lexi came to Stray Rescue after being found by a Good Samaritan as a stray. Her story is sad - apparently her original owner had rehomed her, and her second owner really did not want her back. No one really knew she was missing, and there was definitely not anyone looking for her. We knew that none of this was fair to her, so we were ultimately glad that she ended up in our care. At 7 years old, this tiny cutie was just looking for a place to call home and a family to love her. After spending some time with a loving foster family, Lexi found her happily ever after in a forever home.

Mesa grew up as a puppy in East St. Louis - running across busy streets, playing with other dogs who were chained up. One day, we were able to get EVERY DOG off of this property. That was a huge win. So many dogs would not be miserable - not one more day. When Mesa first arrived, he was pretty shy and shut down, so we introduced him to the dogs in the feral lounge. He quickly opened up to the other dogs, and he actually grew to love being there having so many friends to play with. Levey came to Stray Rescue in February 2025. She was found tied up to a fence at an abandoned school, and she was horribly emaciated. It was a miracle that someone even saw her. She was so scared when she arrived, and you could see every bone in her body. The clinic staff made her feel safe right away, and despite her fears, she climbed into their laps for warmth and comfort. We estimated her to be about 2 years old, and she only weighed 23 pounds. We put her on a refeeding schedule, so that her frail, weak body didn't go into shock, and we tended to her medical needs. Once she was at a safe weight, she went to a foster home. Within two weeks, she had gained 14 pounds and was having so much fun with the resident dogs and cats. Her foster family took such great care of her, and now she is happily living in her forever home!

Another day, another story of neglect and callous mistreatment of our best friend. Tenderloin came to us in November 2024 with the goopiest eyes, missing hair, and very itchy pink skin. He was so uncomfortable in his own body after being very malnourished and receiving zero care. After weeks of medicated baths, nutritional food, and an entropion repair (his eyelid was turning inward), he really started to come out of his shell. He is a big, goofy boy who loves to play, snuggle, and just be a dog! He is currently living with a foster family awaiting his forever home.

Kodiak was rescued from a freezing cold, abandoned house. The rescue team was out looking for a mom and pups (which they later found!) when they stumbled upon Kodiak. He was curled up in a dark corner of the house with an embedded collar. It was so infected that they could smell it when they walked in. They got him into the Jeep and brought him straight to the clinic. The clinic team cleaned up the visible wound from the collar, when they realized how scared, shut down, and nervous he was. It was clear that he had had very little interaction with humans. They also found that he had a severe inner ear infection causing a head tilt and uncoordinated walking. A few weeks into his treatment, someone saw his story and knew that he was the one for them. She took him to foster, brought him to his medical appointments, and adopted him when he was cleared medically. Kodiak finally found people he could trust, and now he has the forever family that he deserves.

In December 2024, we found this poor pup shivering in the cold. She wandered up to someone's front porch and huddled up, trying find shelter from the whipping wind. She didn't believe we were there for her. We had to give her some baby talk to coax her into getting up. When she realized we were getting her to safety, she started cuddling so hard. And that's when we discovered her huge ears have a personality of their own! She's a real sweetheart. We named her Comfy Cozy promising her that she will never be this cold again.

This piece is inspired by sweet Alani who the staff worked tirelessly to save but her body was too tired to carry on. This is an imagining of the life that she (and every dog) deserved to have. On the back is sweet Alani running towards the rainbow bridge, happy and pain free.

One afternoon, we rescued this sweet girl. You could see every rib, but she turned her head away from food. Never a good sign. We did x-rays and saw she had an intestinal blockage. Because she wasn't stable, we knew she wouldn't survive surgery. We tried everything we could to get her stable - we removed fluid from her abdomen to make her more comfortable and took her to a specialist for overnight care. During the car ride we just kept saying, "You can do this baby. We love you so much."

We rubbed her temple gently and told her how brave and beautiful she was. She sweetly nuzzled our hands as if to say, "Thank you."

It was determined she had the blockage for so long her little body couldn't fight it anymore. She would actually need 2-3 feet of intestines removed. She was so weak, she would never make it through the surgery. If only she had come to us sooner, she could have had a chance.

Although thankful she didn't die alone on the street all by herself, our hearts broke. Whether we know them for one hour or one year, we let our walls down and allow ourselves to love them. Because we know they can feel it. Every animal that comes to us matters.

We found Belsnickel shivering on the side of the road on a very cold December day. We knew he had seen some very tough, very cold days. He wasn't just shivering, his whole body was shaking when we found him. He had an eye infection, he was emaciated, and he broke our hearts. We promised this 5-year-old gentleman that his worst days were behind him. After just a few days in our care, he was up and ready to go to foster. He needed a loving home to help him finish his healing journey. Belsnickel has come a long way over the past few months, and he is strong and playful again - who he was always meant to be.

This mama had babies in a doghouse that she was chained to. She lived outside 100% of the time. On February 14th we had a huge win, and we were able to get her and all of her babies! It was 9 degrees outside that day, and the puppies were just 4 weeks old. We named them Serenade, Flirt, Cherish, Arrow, Amour, and Adore. They were finally warm for the first time in their lives. Galentine was able to finish nursing her puppies in the comfort of a foster home rather than the cold doghouse, and the puppies received the proper care that they needed. All of the babies were weaned, altered, and adopted. Galentine found her forever home at an emergency shelter adoption event, and the babies are each finding their own. This mama deserves the world.

We were overly full and on a rescue freeze, but when we got the call about Bumper, we had to try to get him before he was killed. He was weaving in between cars in oncoming traffic, too scared to get himself over to the side of the road. We didn't even film this rescue because we were sure he was going to get hit. Thankfully, the traffic let up and we were able to get him! Once he was safe and warm in the shelter, he quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. He was a happy, affectionate ball of energy. He made many friends, and he went on all kinds of adventures with volunteers. After a few months of waiting, Bumper found his forever family.

Kimiko was found by a Good Samaritan and brought to Stray Rescue. As soon as she arrived, we knew that there were medical conditions that needed to be addressed. Every time she would eat or drink, she would regurgitate immediately. Our veterinarians performed x-rays that were indicative of a genetically inherited condition called persistent right Aortic arch. This complicated condition causes food to be trapped in the esophagus after swallowing and would leave to starvation if left untreated. We worked very closely with specialists at Mizzou for Kimiko's care, and one of the first things they did was put a feeding tube in her stomach so she could be fed externally. This meant that our clinic staff would feed her a liquid diet via the tube six times a day. Not only was this process difficult on Kimiko, but it was also difficult on the staff as they worked so hard to keep her alive, and all she wanted was to be a "normal" dog.

When she was strong enough, she went back to Mizzou for a very complicated open chest surgery to remove the obstruction from around her esophagus. We were all on pins and needles while she was in surgery as it wasn't a guarantee that she would survive. Thankfully, Kimiko's surgery went great, and she came back to the shelter where she could finally begin to recover. The most wonderful foster family reached out and wanted to take care of Kimiko. They gave her plenty of socialization and love while also paying special attention to her unique feeding plan. Kimiko continued to grow and thrive in her foster home.

Kimiko is now feeding tube FREE and living life as a normal dog - something we once could only dream of! Even more exciting? Her foster family fell in love with her, and they are now officially a forever family!

We received a call on a Sunday about a dog tied up to a tree. Neighbors first noticed him in the morning. They delivered him a bowl of water in the afternoon. By that evening, they knew he had been dumped. They called us for help. As soon as we laid eyes on him, we knew we were in love. This one-year-old boy has the cutest ears, the cutest paws, and the cutest pink nose. We named him Beans, and we promised him this would never happen to him again. You're safe with us now, Beans.

A Good Samaritan had found a dog in a box behind the dumpster at his apartment complex. He couldn't believe the sight of her - she was just skin and bones. He picked her up and carried her home, determined to save her life. A few days went by and he became so overwhelmed realizing he was in over his head. He called us at Stray Rescue, and we went and met him right away. He carried her out in a towel, tears streaming down his face. We assured him that he was her angel, and we would take it from there. We named her Tifa.

She was hypothermic and hypoglycemic, and she could not even lift her head. She was just 19 pounds. She spent time in our clinic being carefully re-fed and stabilized, and our Chief of Clinic Administration took her home as a medical foster. After about a month, with Julia, Tifa had gained 15 pounds and was thriving. When she was medically cleared, she went to another foster home with one of our amazing sponsors, and that ended up being her forever home!

Before winter set in, we received shocking footage of a dog wandering with what looked like a bear trap clamped around his ankle. We knew we had to help.
Donna spent nearly a week driving to the area, searching tirelessly. He was terrified, avoided people, and refused to enter our humane traps. But Donna didn't give up-she knew he was injured, in pain, and facing freezing temperatures. Her determination, along with the incredible help from neighbors Mark and Holly, paid off-and after days of trying, Donna was finally able to rescue him. We named him Behrle in their honor.

Sadly, the 5-pound coil spring trap had cut off circulation to his rear leg for over two weeks, leaving it lifeless and requiring amputation. To make matters worse, Behrle had already lost his entire front left foot from a previous injury-and during his exam, we discovered a stick embedded painfully in the roof of his mouth.

Despite everything, Behrle was safe at last. His amputation surgery went well, and we removed the lodged stick, bringing him immediate relief. Though shy, he slowly warmed up, enjoying gentle pets and stroller rides for fresh air while he healed.

This sweet boy endured unimaginable suffering on his own, but now he was finally free from pain and had a chance at the happy life he deserved.

Both sisters were very sick with a horrible skin condition called non contagious demodex mange which is caused by poor nutrition and a very weakened immune system. Their poor skin was so pink, chapped, and scabby - they were in desperate need of antibiotics, pain meds, and medicated baths. Once the inflammation started to dissipate, they were ready for a medical foster home. Now they are both thriving and their skin is looking so much better! Grits is deaf, but she is so smart. She is learning hand signals from her foster mom to know her basic commands. Both of these girls will make amazing additions to their forever families.

Police called us to assist with a heart wrenching scene in February 2025. While doing a welfare check, they came across a vacated home where the owners had left everything behind - including their pets. One dog was found deceased, as well as bird in a cage. But, we were able to save Gilligan. He was making himself as small as possible trying to hide from us in the tiniest corner of the house. He was terrified. We scooped him up to bring him to Stray Rescue, and we also brought back his deceased companions to have them cremated and give them some dignity in death. Gilligan was so skinny and shut down when he first arrived, but even quicker than we thought, he started opening up to us. We knew that if we went slowly, he wanted nothing more than to be loved. Once he gained some weight, he went to a foster home to continue getting more comfortable with people. His forever family found him not long after, and he is living the very best life - just like he deserves.

Eddie was tied up to a meter at a park and left behind on a very rainy, muddy, cold day. We got calls that he was there for a while, on a short leash, not knowing what to do with himself. He was a big dog, and he looked intimidating - barking at us as we approached. But, the moment he knew he was safe and we were going to be nothing but nice to him, he gave us the biggest pittie smile! We named him Eddie, and we all fell head over heels for this 85-pound lug head who wanted nothing more than to be basked in love.

After the May 16th tornado, calls flooded in. North St. Louis City suffered a lot of damage. While we were out responding to a call about a dog, we could hear another dog barking frantically in the abandoned house next door. We crawled in a broken window to assess the situation, but the dog got spooked and ran out of the house. A car pulled up just then. "Are you with Stray Rescue? There's a dog we have seen before that ran out of that house, and it looked like she could be nursing puppies!" Game on.

We slowly navigated through the trash filled rooms to the stairway which was COVERED with Missouri Lottery tickets. Did the previous inhabitants hit the jackpot and move away? Up the stairs we went, and sure enough, on the top floor, we counted at least six puppies - silent and scared and scattering into the rooms they have called "home" up until now. No wonder the mama dog was barking so frantically. She's a good mom and very protective of her babies! We devised a plan to safely rescue this little family, and we were able to get seven puppies out of the house - Winner, Scratch Off, Powerball, Mega Million, Lucky Draw, Lottery, and Jackpot.

The abandoned house was so full of hiding spots, junk, and trash, we were worried we may have missed a puppy. The only way to be sure was to leave mom there overnight to care for any missed puppies. We set up trail cams and watched intently. It absolutely broke our heart seeing her looking for her puppies and bringing food for them, but it let us know for sure that we had all of them. Now, it was time to go get mama! Once we got her, we were smitten. She was the sweetest, most beautiful mama we could have imagined! She went into a foster home where she gets to be the center of attention (as she deserves!), and her babies went to foster homes as well. The whole family is now safe, and they will only know love from here on out.

We'll never forget the horrifying day we met this brave boy. He had infected bite wounds on his face and legs, but the most shocking injury was to the skin around his jaw and chin. It had been completely degloved, almost looking like his jaw was missing! He had been tied to a dumpster - discarded like trash. Thankfully he was found by a compassionate woman who took him home and called for help. His rescuers rushed to pick him up and bring him back to the safety of Stray Rescue. When he laid down in the back of the Jeep and gave a deep sigh, he knew he was finally safe.

The world rallied around Spartacus throughout his healing journey, confident in Stray Rescue's ability to save his life. After extensive reconstructive surgery and consistent wound care by our skilled surgeon, Spartacus made a miraculous recovery, and now he's the happiest and strongest boy! He's grateful for his second chance and is loved by ALL who meet him.

In January 2025, Stray Rescue was hit with a few very sad cases within days of each other, and one of them was Snowdrop. She was brought to us after being seized from a hoarding situation in rural Missouri. She was transported in her crate, and when we opened it up, we were horrified to see this 2-year-old girl with huge swollen legs, open wounds exposing the bone, pressure sores, urine burns, and infection attacking the joints in her back legs. She smelled terribly of rotting infection, and she did not have the strength to move. She had just about given up, and we couldn't blame her. We needed to stabilize her and get her infections under control before we could do anything else, so gave her fluids, antibiotics, pain medication, and a urinary catheter. She spent several weeks living in the clinic getting the best care around. The veterinary team was able to monitor her wounds, take her outside in the stroller for some fresh air, and help acclimate her to being around people that loved her and would not hurt her. She was shy and fearful, but very slowly, she started coming around and her personality started peaking through.

Snowdrop did have to go through a special kind of hindlimb amputation called a "coxofemoral amputation" because, in addition to a severely infected and necrotic right hock joint, she also had a hip luxation on the same side. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and she recovered quickly. In March, our friends over at Joey's PAW sent us a custom wheelchair for her, and she could finally zoom around all on her own! She even got to attend a local high school's Special Olympics day as the guest of honor with one of our volunteers, and she had the BEST day ever! Just days later, her forever family saw her story and knew they had to come meet her. It was love at first sight. Snowdrop finally gets to live the life she so deserves with a mom, a dad, and a furry sister who she immediately adored. Snowdrop's story was devastating to say the least, but she will never have to relive even a second of her past ever again!

Why did we name her Snowdrop?
Snowdrops hold a deep and enduring meaning, symbolizing new beginnings, hope, rebirth, and the capacity to triumph over challenges. As one of the first flowers to herald the arrival of spring, they're not just a sign of the changing seasons but also a beacon of positivity.

Jennings came to us after a Good Samaritan found him in bad shape. He was missing almost all of his hair, his skin was broken and bleeding in many places, and he was just a 10-month-old puppy. What a horrible, painful life of neglect and loneliness he had lived so far. Our veterinary staff quickly determined that he had non-contagious mange, and he could go to a foster home as soon as possible to be able to recover in peace. He would just need some medicated baths and a few check-ins along the way. Fast forward a few weeks, and Jennings was recovering remarkably fast! His hair was growing back, he had all of the adorable puppy energy, and he was learning all about how to be a dog. This sweet boy is still living with his foster family awaiting his forever home. He will never have to go through such an ordeal again!

Rodney came to Stray Rescue after he was found wandering the streets by a Good Samaritan. He was such a good, calm, beautiful boy - we couldn't understand who would abandon him. Rodney quickly went to a foster home where his foster parents learned everything they could about him. He loved to spend time with humans whether they were snuggled up or playing outside. He was great with kids and other pets. He really was the total package. Not much later, Rodney found his forever home.

Burnt Toast was transferred to us needing emergency medical care after being hit by a car in southern Missouri. He had a large wound on his ankle that had become severely infected, he was covered in fleas, and he was anemic. It was clear that no one had been taking care of him. We treated him in the clinic for weeks, but over time it became clear that the infection inside of his ankle had caused too much damage and his leg would never properly heal. The vet staff decided to amputate his leg, so he would one day be able to run and play without feeling any pain. Burnt Toast recovered from the amputation like a champ, and he is the most loving, energetic dog on three legs that you could ever meet.

We received a call about a very sick puppy. When we pulled up to get her, we were horrified at her condition. This poor girl. Her skin was pink, scabby, and swollen to the point that she could barely open her eyes. It hurt just to look at her - we could only imagine the pain and discomfort she was in. We named her Devonna. As we had her in our arms and headed back to the Jeep, two more little heads popped up almost begging "What about us???". They were living in an outdoor pool with fencing around it, and their skin was in bad condition. Not as bad as Devonna's, but they were well on their way. Thankfully, the owner admitted to being in over their head and agreed to let us take them, too. We named them Portia (female) and Rowland (male), and they got in the Jeep with us to head back to the veterinary team who was awaiting their arrival.

All three dogs had demodex mange. Devonna's case was so severe, she could not even stand up on her own. We gave them all medicated baths, antibiotics, and pain medication to allow them to rest. After spending some time in the clinic under veterinary supervision, Devonna could finally stand on her own, so she was ready to finish her healing in a medical foster home. Portia and Rowland also went to a medical foster home together, and wow, it is amazing what love can do for a dog. Within 5 weeks, Devonna had transformed into a whole new dog, and Portia and Rowland looked SO much better, too! These were some pretty amazing recoveries. One by one, each dog found their forever families, and they will never have to experience such horrible neglect ever again.

It was a 7-degree morning in January when a call came in that a little dog had been porch-hopping for a few weeks. She gave us some trouble! What we didn't capture on camera was about two hours of almost getting her, but she would do ANYTHING not to get caught. Once we finally got her, we named her Joanie January. We shaved off all of that cold, wet, dirty matted fur, and she already looked like a brand-new dog! Joanie January quickly became the princess she was always meant to be, and she is loving life in her forever home.

Aria came to us in January 2025 after surviving a fire in her outdoor kennel. She was burned all over - her head, her ears, her paws, her nose, her back, her legs. Despite the trauma she had endured, she had the best, most loving attitude while she was in our care. It took over six months for her to get to a point in healing that she could go to a medical foster. She still comes to the clinic every week for bandage changes, but we are all so happy that she now gets to sleep in a bed, in a home every single night. Aria is truly the definition of a warrior dog, and we cannot wait to watch her live the life she most certainly deserves.

Snickers came to Stray Rescue in 2022. Though he didn't love other dogs, he loved his people hard, and they loved him right back. He was a calm, stoic guy that enjoyed going on walks and car rides with his human friends. He loved to cuddle, and he loved his treats.

Snickers crossed the rainbow bridge at the beginning of 2025, and his loss was felt throughout the shelter. His staff and volunteer friends miss him everyday. He will always be remembered, and we're grateful to have had the time with him that we did.

Prairie was transported to Stray Rescue three days after being hit by a car on a busy St. Louis highway. Good Samaritans saw it, jumped out of their car, and helped her. She was in so much pain, they had a hard time getting her in their car, but those heroes weren't going to leave her. They fundraised like crazy and got her into an emergency clinic for the weekend. The emergency clinic determined she had not one, not two, but THREE broken legs. She also had pulmonary contusions, which is fluid around her lungs. The clinic was able to get her stable and her legs splinted. Because of the intensity and cost of her anticipated recovery, the clinic recommended euthanasia. The Good Samaritans reached out to us to see if we could take her, and we said yes.

Despite what she had gone through, her spirit was so bright! She had to have many surgeries and was able to keep three of her legs. By the end of the year, she had found her forever family. She is happier than ever, and she is living her very best life.

We'll never forget the horrifying day we met this brave boy. He had infected bite wounds on his face and legs, but the most shocking injury was to the skin around his jaw and chin. It had been completely degloved, almost looking like his jaw was missing! He had been tied to a dumpster - discarded like trash. Thankfully he was found by a compassionate woman who took him home and called for help. His rescuers rushed to pick him up and bring him back to the safety of Stray Rescue. When he laid down in the back of the Jeep and gave a deep sigh, he knew he was finally safe.

The world rallied around Spartacus throughout his healing journey, confident in Stray Rescue's ability to save his life. After extensive reconstructive surgery and consistent wound care by our skilled surgeon, Spartacus made a miraculous recovery, and now he's the happiest and strongest boy! He's grateful for his second chance and is loved by ALL who meet him.

Oakley was rescued in June 2024. She was just 10 months old all by herself hiding in some brush. Upon closer inspection, we saw that she suffered from a gaping neck wound - she must have had an embedded collar. It was no longer on her, but the wound proved she had already faced neglect at such a young age. She stayed in our clinic until the neck wound was mostly healed, and then she went to a foster home where she could finally just be a dog. Her forever family quickly found her, and she lives happily and safely in her forever home.

Unfortunately, he was in need of an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) surgery to correct the injury to his rear leg, so he couldn't be as free and playful as he wanted to be! His surgery was successful, and Squirtle is the happiest guy around! He thrived in our P4P (Puppies for Parole) program, and he now lives happily in his forever home!

This sweet boy is Jasper, and he is so ready for his forever home! He is 6 years old but very young at heart, super playful and energetic. His favorite activities include fetch, booty scratches, chewing on bones, and running!! He would run run run all day if he could! His ideal home placement would be in a home with a backyard, so he can run and play all the time. Jasper is a little timid, and can take a minute to warm up to people, but once he does, he's a sweetheart and will love you forever! He does not like cats. He's very good on a leash and takes treats so gently. Due to his energetic nature, smaller kiddos probably aren't the best for him, but he does pretty well with older kids. Please give this sweet boy a chance and you will have a best friend for life!

Shrimp and Grits arrived at Stray Rescue after a Good Samaritan found them in North St. Louis. Both sisters were very sick with a horrible skin condition called non contagious demodex mange which is caused by poor nutrition and a very weakened immune system. Their poor skin was so pink, chapped, and scabby - they were in desperate need of antibiotics, pain meds, and medicated baths. Once the inflammation started to dissipate, they were ready for a medical foster home. Now they are both thriving and their skin is looking so much better! Grits is deaf, but she is so smart, and she is learning hand signals from her foster mom to know her basic commands. Both of these girls will make amazing additions to their forever families.

After the tornado struck North City St. Louis, Stray Rescue received numerous calls about dogs needing help. While responding to one of these calls, we heard a dog barking inside one of the houses. I tried to get a look through a broken window, but a large cabinet was blocking the window. As I went around to the side, I caught a glimpse of a dog bolting through the weeds.

We made our way around the front and were stopped by a couple saying they had seen that dog coming from the house and she looked to be nursing puppies. We certainly were not leaving without checking for puppies!

The first floor was covered in filthy, discarded items that had belonged to the previous owner. There was no sign of puppies on the first floor, so I headed up the steps. As I went up, I noticed the steps were covered with old lottery tickets. There were hundreds of them! But the real "winners" were the puppies standing at the top of the steps. Of course they scattered, but over the next hour we searched and grabbed puppies as we found them. The puppy in the photo was the last of seven puppies rescued that day. I thought we had them all but did one last look around and this little one was under a mattress.

We left a camera set up in the house. We knew if there happened to be another puppy hiding that mom would be back, and the puppy would come out with her. When we were absolutely certain the pups had all been rescued, we picked up mom.

In the end, this family was definitely a winner!

This tan pittie called this house "home." This call was not unlike the others we have received in the past. An abandoned house with an animal living inside. Most times we find an open door or window that the dog is able to go in/out. But this time, the dog truly seemed stuck on the second floor. It seemed like he had the entire floor to move around based on the window that he would pop up in.

As we tried to figure out how to get him out, a neighbor informed us that he did have an owner that actually came by every day to check on him and make sure he had food & water. This house had burned and while the owner was figuring out where to go, he wasn't able to have his dog with him, so he kept him here. Although it definitely was not an ideal situation for the dog, he didn't end up being surrendered to an already overcrowded shelter.

This little shy cutie is named Tarot. She spent time growing up on the street before I was able to rescue her. She wanted to trust me so badly. Sometimes she would even do a little army crawl to come up to get the Vienna Sausages I put down. But each time I tried to get out the leash, she wanted nothing to do with me. I tried the trap too, but she never showed any interest in going in.

She started to have a couple male "friends" hang out with her, so it was time to ramp up the rescue efforts. I set a trap up near their house and bungeed it open so they could all get used to going in/out with nothing happening. This helps them believe it is safe and then after a bit of time we actually set the trap, and they are already comfortable going in and easily trapped. This seemed to work! I was able to get the boys first and just two days later Tarot finally decided it was ok to go all the way in.

The two boys adjusted quickly and are absolutely adorable together. Tarot is adjusting to her foster home and gave birth to 7 healthy babies.

The expression captured on this stray's face is one we see way too often. There is a sad, empty, lifelessness in his eyes. He shows no joy, no tail wags, no pittie "smile." It truly seems as though the only thing he has to look forward to is seeing the jeep and knowing there will be food.

This handsome boy started to stay with a beautiful, female Pyrenees along with a couple other males. I had been trying to get the female for months with no luck. Now that she had these new friends, they started to stay in an abandoned store with only one way out. I knew this would be my chance to get her since she had completely avoided my traps in the past. I was finally lucky enough to get her and started working on rescuing the males. Unfortunately, before I was able to get this handsome boy he disappeared, and I have not seen him since. I still look for him when I am over feeding in the hopes that he will surface again.

This pup was one of six siblings. They lived at this house but always stayed outside. Their mom was around for a while too, but then I no longer saw her. I know the owner of the dogs had been reached out to about getting help and possibly surrendering at least some of the dogs. But her response was "I want each of my children to have a puppy." Never mind the fact that none of the kids ever paid any attention to the puppies or fed them. But it's a fine line to walk when dealing with community members. The number of puppies slowly started to decrease. I can't be certain about their whereabouts, but I think a couple had been liberated from their situation.

I had been seeing this male for a bit when I went to feed. He was not in bad shape and because there was no space at the shelter, I really needed to keep an eye on him until I could rescue him. Pretty soon, I realized he had a female friend with him. She was already looking a little "round" so trying to figure out a rescue plan needed to happen sooner than later. Part of the problem was that after I started to see them together, they weren't super consistent about where they would pop up, so I wouldn't see them on a regular basis.

I got word that she had actually had her puppies, but we didn't know where. A community member had said that both dogs were coming to her house every morning, and she would feed them. So, we sat at her house one morning and sure enough, they showed up like a happy couple just going for morning breakfast.

After she finished eating, she trotted off down the road, so we trailed behind. We made sure to stay far enough back that we didn't spook her. She walked down the road, crossed a busy street, and kept going until she cut through a couple houses. I got around to the next street over and there she was, heading back to a very familiar abandoned house. Through the years, I had pulled a few litters out from under this house. The problem became that the guy who lived next door was not a very nice man. And he definitely didn't like me because I had taken "his puppies" from under this house before.

I could hear her barking at me when I went to the opening of the crawl space, but she sounded so far away. I figured she just had them way on the other end of the space under the house. The other obstacle to overcome was dad. He would sit near the house and bark to protect mom and puppies. I was able to set my trailcam up under the house so I could keep track of mom and dad coming and going.

I knew the puppies were under the house, so I set two traps and got lucky enough to get both parents quickly. We loaded them into our cars so they wouldn't bark and because the temps were freezing. I maneuvered into the crawl space and made my way to the farthest part (which would have been the front of the house). There was no sign of the puppies, and I never heard them crying. I crawled from one end to the other searching under that house. I started thinking I had been wrong about the location of the puppies. But if I was, why was mom always going in/out from under the house? I searched everywhere and even found some small tunnels, but still no puppies. I went back towards the front part of the house and finally noticed a hole in the floor leading up into the actual house. I squeezed through and saw the front room of the house full of insulation and building supplies. Mom was smart!!! It had been some of the coldest temps this winter and mom had the puppies in a cocoon of insulation. I peeked inside, and there were the puppies. Finally! I pulled them out one by one and put them in a small carrier. Mom sure had done a great job feeding and taking care of them!

With puppies in tow inside the carrier, I crawled back to the opening and headed for the warm jeep. Mom and puppies were reunited and went to a foster home. Dad only spent a couple days at the shelter and left for foster as well. His foster family fell in love and adopted him. Mom and all puppies have since been adopted, too.

This pup ended up being very elusive, apparently not wanting to be rescued. I spotted him early one morning while out feeding. He was very interested in the Vienna sausages but never got close. I set a trap, but he would not come anywhere near it. He took off behind an abandoned building and went into some thick weeds where I completely lost track of him. I drove around and checked as many areas as I could see that he might be able to go with no luck at all. I pass by the area frequently and still keep an eye out for him, but I have never seen him since that day.

This squishy face was just hanging out of the second story of this big brick building. The building is owned, and according to the small shop next door, the owner comes by every day to check on the dog and spend time with him. We have driven by multiple times and have never seen the dog back up in the window.

When I first started seeing this boy, he was in the yard of a corner house in Washington Park. There were other dogs in the yard with him, and I wouldn't always see him, so I assumed the people that lived there would periodically let the dog inside. But pretty soon I started seeing him by this trash can going through the trash, then he would sneak back in the gate. He was the only one I would see now, and he started to roam farther away. I felt bad that he was always by himself and was too nervous to come up to me. He would always come running when he saw the jeep though, so I quickly set a trap one day and waited for him to go in. Thankfully he was hungrier than he was scared to go in, and he got his freedom ride. I named him Odin, and he is happy in his new home.

It was a cold, snowy day when I spotted this tan dog by a building I have passed a million times. The way he was standing there, it looked as though the painted alien was looking down on him. I had never seen him before and he wasn't in bad shape, so I wondered if he had just gotten out from his home. He was certainly skittish but a little curious. I tossed a couple Vienna sausages, and he ate them up, but still no interest in coming up to me.

This boy had no interest in going with me that day. He ate a few more sausages then off he went. As hard as it is to see them and not rescue them every single time, sometimes that is just the reality.

"Home" to this trio was an abandoned, dilapidated old store. They found shelter here, and it's where I finally found a way to rescue the white Pyrenees. She originally stayed by herself on a run down, overgrown property. When I would pull up in my jeep, she would come running to eat, but when a trap was set, she went nowhere near it.

I was happy to see her move around the corner to that abandoned store, but I knew there were males now hanging out with her, and she was in heat. I needed to figure out a way to rescue her before she had puppies.

I started feeding them inside the building, so they were comfortable with me being in there too. I scoped out the building to make sure there was only one exit and when the time was right, I blocked the door with them inside and was able to rescue her.

By this time though, the tan pup had already moved on and the spotted dog disappeared soon after I got the female. I still watch for both of them, and it bothers me that I wasn't able to rescue them as well.

Mary Berry's rescue in October 2024 was quite a scary one. Mary had been a street dog that Donna regularly fed, and then one day, Donna noticed she was pregnant. She was harder to find and feed during her pregnancy, but once she started coming around again, Donna knew she had a mom and puppies to rescue.

Mary had taken shelter in a dilapidated, abandoned house on a gravel road. She was skin and bones, but her pups were chubby and well taken care of, hidden in the crumbling basement. What a good mom she had been. The rescue team had to be very careful in this house, as the floors were not stable and there was so much trash and so many nails and hazards to avoid.

The puppies fought hard not to be rescued, but we didn't give up on them. They were all so scared, and so was Mary. Fortunately, everyone made it out safely, and we had five healthy babies and a new mom to add to our family. We named her Mary Berry after the Great British Baking Show, and all her chubby little puppies fit right in - Show Stopper, Soggy Bottom, Sponge, Stodgy, and Shortbread.

After a few days, the puppies went to foster homes, and Mary stayed at the shelter in the Feral Lounge to learn how to be a dog herself. It took some time for this shy mama to open up, but once she did, we realized she was just a big puppy herself! She loves and adores other dogs more than anything else - she sleeps on top of them, shares toys, and gets along great with all of the different personalities. Mary's puppies are all living in their forever homes, and we can't wait for Mary to find hers.

This very skinny boy showed up at someone's house, and thankfully they were able to contain him until we could pick him up. His skin was pink and raw from infection, and his nails were so long. It had to have been painful to walk. He was so exhausted that he fell asleep on his freedom ride. He was treated for demodex mange, and he made his way into a foster home. He was finally able to be a dog and be loved on by humans - what he always wanted. Lorenzo found his forever home at the beginning of this year, and he is never looking back!

We received information about a German Shepherd needing emergency medical care, and when we saw his photo, we said yes we will take him! This poor boy looked so sick and sad. His eyes and nose were red, goopy, and inflamed, so we got him into our veterinarian immediately. She suspected an upper respiratory infection, so they started fluids, antibiotics, and pain meds. They ran special tests to appropriately treat what was causing his infection. He stayed with us in the clinic for about a month, and as soon as he was ready to go, he found his forever family. His family takes special care of him to make sure he gets the care he needs, and he is now a happy, playful guy!
